"When Israel was a child,1 I loved2 him, and out of Egypt I called my son.32
But the more they were called, the more they went away from me.a4 They sacrificed to the Baals5 and they burned incense to images.63
It was I who taught Ephraim to walk, taking them by the arms;7 but they did not realize it was I who healed8 them.
I led them with cords of human kindness, with ties of love.9 To them I was like one who lifts a little child to the cheek, and I bent down to feed10 them.115
"Will they not return to Egypt12 and will not Assyria13 rule over them because they refuse to repent?146
Swords15 will flash in their cities, will destroy the bars16 of their gates and put an end to their plans.
My people are determined to turn17 from me.18 Even though they call me God Most High, I will by no means exalt them.
"How can I give you up,19 Ephraim?20 How can I hand you over, Israel? How can I treat you like Admah? How can I make you like Zeboyim?21 My heart is changed within me; all my compassion22 is aroused.239
I will not carry out my fierce anger,24 nor will I devastate25 Ephraim again. For I am God, and not a human being26-- the Holy One27 among you. I will not come against their cities.
They will follow the LORD; he will roar28 like a lion.29 When he roars, his children will come trembling30 from the west.3111
They will come trembling like birds from Egypt, like doves32 from Assyria.33 I will settle them in their homes,"34 declares the LORD.
