The Importance of Remembering God

“Remember who you are.”

It’s important to remember God. He created us in His image, for specific purpose, and has good plans for our lives. That is important to remember! His love for us is huge, immense, and all-consuming enough that He sent Jesus, His only Son, to sacrifice His earthly life to save ours.

Remembering how loved we are is important! Christ Jesus promised to be with us, to the end of every age. We are never alone. That’s important to remember! Our lives are meant to point back to Him, to bring glory to God. And we aren’t alone in living lives with such great stakes! Christ Jesus sent the Holy Spirit to help, comfort and guide us. We are never alone, and we have the power of God living in us. Remembering this is important. Genesis 9:16 says:

Though our days on earth seem long while we are living them, they are but a blink of an eye to God.

We aren’t so different than the wayward people of God in the Old Testament. Which is why it’s important to remember them! We wander, too. We forget. We rebel. We get lost. We let life overwhelm us because we forget who the Creator of all life is, and that He is with us and loves us. We forget that He fights for us. We forget that the victory has already been won, and we are welcome to celebrate.

God’s people were taught to remember Him. We, too, need to teach ourselves to remember God. Each Christmas, we celebrate the sending of the Son to save us. Each Easter, we remember the Son’s sacrifice on our behalf, and the resurrecting defeat of death, once for all. Remember, Christ Jesus is sitting at the right hand of the Father interceding for us. Remember, His Holy Spirit is in us. “For 40 years God had humbled and tested them - and fed them with manna, while their clothes did not wear out and their feet did not swell - that they might learn to trust God and live by His Word.” (Halley’s Bible Notes)

Remembering is an important part of believing. Jesus said to His disciple Thomas, “You believe because you have seen me. Blessed are those who believe without seeing me” (John 20:29). Remember, we are blessed. That’s us! Remember the new life we have in Christ from the moment we surrender our lives to Him and accept our salvation. Remember, it’s a gift from God! Remember, we are always loved, never alone, and meant to live our lives to the full.

In conclusion, let’s meditate on what it means to remember God by reading Proverbs 3:6-16:
