26 Verses to Ground You When Life Feels Chaotic

Even as Christians, we are bound to have moments in life that feel chaotic, confusing, or overwhelming. Jesus said we would have troubles in this lifetime. Yet that is never the end of the story. Facing obstacles will never trump the hope we have in God. Jesus is never surprised by what we are going through.

“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world” (John 16:33).

We may face hardships and challenges because of the brokenness of the world, but God wants us to have hope and peace through it all. Jesus has overcome every situation and circumstance you will ever face, even those chaotic times in life that seem insurmountable. We can trust God in chaotic times, knowing He is with us.

There are passages in Scripture that provide wisdom, hope, and a foundation of truth to you when you go through difficult seasons. Here are 26 verses to ground you when life feels chaotic.

Old Testament

“You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives” (Genesis 50:20).

“For we have no power to face this vast army that is attacking us. We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on you” (2 Chronicles 20:12).

“Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God” (Psalm 42:11).

“Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path” (Psalm 119:105).

“Let my cry come before you, O Lord; give me understanding according to your word!” (Psalm 119:169).

“The Lord will keep you from all harm — he will watch over your life; the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore” (Psalm 121:7-8).

“You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you” (Isaiah 26:3).

“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand” (Isaiah 41:10).

“When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze” (Isaiah 43:2).

“You came near when I called you, and you said, ‘Do not fear.’ You, Lord, took up my case; you redeemed my life” (Lamentations 3:57-58).

“But as for me, I watch in hope for the Lord, I wait for God my Savior; my God will hear me” (Micah 7:7).

“The Sovereign Lord is my strength; he makes my feet like the feet of a deer, he enables me to tread on the heights” (Habakkuk 3:19).

New Testament

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light” (Matthew 11:28-30).

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid” (John 14:27).

“Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope” (Romans 5:3-4).

“Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer” (Romans 12:12).

“For God is not a God of confusion but of peace” (1 Corinthians 14:33).

“I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people” (Ephesians 1:18).

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6-7).

“Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times and in every way. The Lord be with all of you” (2 Thessalonians 3:16).

“Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful” (Hebrews 10:23).

“Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you” (James 1:2-5).

“Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him” (James 1:12).

“Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up” (James 4:10).

“Casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you” (1 Peter 5:7).

A Prayer for Times of Chaos

Heavenly Father,

I praise You because You are good and faithful. You are gracious and merciful. I am thankful for all the ways You take care of me and watch over me. I trust You see all things, especially what I am going through right now. Lord, my heart is heavy with confusion, with stress, and with feeling anxious right now. I desire to lay all my worries at Your feet. I know, Lord, that You can handle anything that comes my way. I know that You have overcome these troubles I face. I know that You are my help and that You care for me.

As I cry out to You, give me understanding and guide my steps as I navigate the chaos I am enduring. I love you, Lord, and desire to keep my eyes on You instead of letting the chaos consume me. Thank You for hearing my prayers.

These 26 verses are just a sampling of the truth of God when it comes to the chaos and troubles we will face. No matter what, God is still completely in control and always present with His beloved children. You can trust God in all things. We can commit these verses to our thoughts and pray them over ourselves as we endure. We can stand on the promises in Scripture knowing that God will follow through on every promise He has made. What hope we have in Jesus even when times are hard and the path is marked with uncertainty.
