23 On that day, there will be thorns and thistles in every place where a thousand vines worth a thousand silver shekels once grew.

Isaiah 7:23 Meaning and Commentary

Isaiah 7:23

And it shall come to pass in that day; [that] every place
shall be
Barren and unfruitful, for want of men to till the ground: where there were a thousand vines at a thousand silverlings;
which were so good, as to be sold or let out for so many silver shekels F13; or the fruit of them came to such a price; see ( Song of Solomon 8:11 ) : it shall [even] be for briers and thorns;
for want of persons to stock the ground and cultivate it.

FOOTNOTES:

F13 Which was about two shillings and sixpence of our money.

Isaiah 7:23 In-Context

21 On that day, one will raise a young cow and two sheep
22 and will eat butter because of the abundance of milk, for all who remain in the land will eat butter and honey.
23 On that day, there will be thorns and thistles in every place where a thousand vines worth a thousand silver shekels once grew.
24 Only those with bows and arrows will go there, because the entire land will become thorns and thistles.
25 As for the hills that were once farmed with hoes, you won't go there for fear of the thorns and thistles. They will become places where cattle are turned loose and sheep wander.
