What is known is that Joel has written about an army of locusts that invaded Judah sometime between the ninth and fifth centuries B.C. Joel sees in this invasion a warning from the Lord. To Joel, the devastation caused by the locusts is a foreshadowing of the great and dreadful day of the LORD (Joel 2:31). Joel says that the locust plague is God’s warning to the ISRAELITES that if they do not repent, a yet greater JUDGMENT will come upon them. Therefore, Joel issues a call to REPENTANCE: restoration and blessing will come to the people only when they have repented and returned to the Lord.
