God renews the covenant with Abram, and changes his name to Abraham, in token of a greater blessing.
Circumcision is instituted.
15 Sarai's name is changed to Sarah, and she is blessed.
17 Isaac is promised, and the time of his birth fixed.
23 Abraham and Ishmael are circumcised.

And God said, Sarah thy wife shall bear thee a son indeed; and thou shalt call his name Isaac: and I will establish my covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his seed after him.

Isaac
{Yitzchak,} which we change into Isaac, signifies laughter; in allusion to Abraham's laughing, ver
17. By this Abraham did not express his unbelief or weakness of faith, but his joy at the prospect of the fulfilment of so glorious a promise; and to this our Lord evidently alludes, John 8:56 .
