Luke 22:40 Meaning and Commentary

Luke 22:40

And when he was at the place
In the garden, at Gethsemane, which was at the foot of the Mount of Olives; he said unto them;
to the disciples, as the Persic version reads; pray that ye enter not into temptation.
This, according to the Evangelists Matthew and Mark, was said to them after he had prayed the first time, and returned to the disciples, and found them sleeping; (See Gill on Matthew 26:41).

Luke 22:40 In-Context

38 "Lord," they said, "look, here are two swords." "Enough of that!" He told them.
39 He went out and made His way as usual to the Mount of Olives, and the disciples followed Him.
40 When He reached the place, He told them, "Pray that you may not enter into temptation."
41 Then He withdrew from them about a stone's throw, knelt down, and began to pray,
42 "Father, if You are willing, take this cup away from Me-nevertheless, not My will, but Yours, be done." [
