Joshua 19:49 Meaning and Commentary

Joshua 19:49

And when they made an end of dividing the land for
inheritance by their coasts
That is, Eleazar, Joshua, and the ten men appointed for this, purpose; when all the lots were drawn, and the several inheritances which came up to them were divided among the families of the respective tribes, this work being finished:

the children of Israel gave an inheritance to Joshua the son of Nun
among them;
most interpreters observe the modesty of Joshua, that though the oldest and the greatest man in the nation, the chief governor, yet had his inheritance last of all; nor did he take any part to himself, it was given to him by the people, who had the whole land divided among them; in which he was a type of Christ; see ( 2 Corinthians 8:9 ) ( Philippians 2:6 Philippians 2:7 ) .

Joshua 19:49 In-Context

47 The border of the children of Dan went out beyond them; for the children of Dan went up and fought against Leshem, and took it, and struck it with the edge of the sword, and possessed it, and lived therein, and called Leshem, Dan, after the name of Dan their father.
48 This is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Dan according to their families, these cities with their villages.
49 So they made an end of distributing the land for inheritance by the borders of it; and the children of Yisra'el gave an inheritance to Yehoshua the son of Nun in the midst of them:
50 according to the mitzvah of the LORD they gave him the city which he asked, even Timnat-Serach in the hill-country of Efrayim; and he built the city, and lived therein.
51 These are the inheritances, which El`azar the Kohen, and Yehoshua the son of Nun, and the heads of the fathers' [houses] of the tribes of the children of Yisra'el, distributed for inheritance by lot in Shiloh before the LORD, at the door of the tent of meeting. So they made an end of dividing the land.
