Mark 9:14 Meaning and Commentary

Mark 9:14

And when he came to his disciples
The other nine, who were left at the bottom of the mountain, and were waiting for him:

he saw a great multitude about them:
there was a multitude that followed him from Bethsaida hither; and which, very likely, was greatly increased upon Christ's arrival in those parts, and the people hearing of it;

and the Scribes questioning with them;
disputing and contending with them about their master, his doctrines and miracles, and their mission and authority from him; insulting them, on account of their inability to dispossess a dumb spirit, hereafter related.

Mark 9:14 In-Context

12 He said to them, "Eliyah indeed comes first, and restores all things. How is it written about the Son of Man, that he should suffer many things and be despised?
13 But I tell you that Eliyah has come, and they have also done to him whatever they wanted to, even as it is written about him."
14 Coming to the talmidim, he saw a great multitude around them, and Sofrim questioning them.
15 Immediately all the multitude, when they saw him, were greatly amazed, and running to him greeted him.
16 He asked the Sofrim, "What are you asking them?"
