1 Y fue Roboam a Siquem; porque todo Israel había venido a Siquem para hacerlo rey

2 Y aconteció, que cuando lo oyó Jeroboam hijo de Nabat, que aún estaba en Egipto, (porque había huido de delante del rey Salomón, y habitaba en Egipto;

3 enviaron y le llamaron. Vino pues Jeroboam y toda la congregación de Israel, y hablaron a Roboam, diciendo

4 Tu padre agravó nuestro yugo, mas ahora tú disminuye algo de la dura servidumbre de tu padre, y del yugo pesado que puso sobre nosotros, y te serviremos

5 Y él les dijo: Idos, y de aquí a tres días volved a mí. Y el pueblo se fue

6 Entonces el rey Roboam tomó consejo con los ancianos que habían estado delante de Salomón su padre cuando vivía, y dijo: ¿Cómo aconsejáis vosotros que responda a este pueblo

7 Y ellos le hablaron, diciendo: Si tú fueres hoy siervo de este pueblo, y lo sirvieres, y respondiéndole buenas palabras les hablares, ellos te servirán para siempre

8 Mas él, desecho el consejo de los viejos que ellos le habían dado, tomó consejo con los jóvenes que se habían criado con él, y estaban delante de él

9 Y les dijo: ¿Cómo aconsejáis vosotros que respondamos a este pueblo, que me ha hablado, diciendo: Disminuye algo del yugo que tu padre puso sobre nosotros

10 Entonces los jóvenes que se habían criado con él, le respondieron, diciendo: Así hablarás a este pueblo que te ha dicho estas palabras: Tu padre agravó nuestro yugo; mas tú disminúyenos algo; así les hablarás: El menor dedo de los míos es más grueso que los lomos de mi padre

11 Ahora pues, mi padre os cargó de pesado yugo, mas yo añadiré a vuestro yugo; mi padre os castigó con azotes, mas yo os heriré con escorpiones

12 Y al tercer día vino Jeroboam con todo el pueblo a Roboam; según el rey lo había mandado, diciendo: Volved a mí al tercer día

13 Y el rey respondió al pueblo duramente, desechando el consejo de los ancianos que ellos le habían dado

14 y les habló conforme al consejo de los jóvenes, diciendo: Mi padre agravó vuestro yugo, pero yo añadiré a vuestro yugo; mi padre os castigó con azotes, mas yo os castigaré con escorpiones

15 Y no oyó el rey al pueblo; porque era ordenación del SEÑOR, para confirmar su palabra, que el SEÑOR había hablado por medio de Ahías, el silonita a Jeroboam hijo de Nabat

16 Y cuando todo el pueblo vio que el rey no les había oído, le respondió estas palabras, diciendo: ¿Qué parte tenemos nosotros con David? No hay heredad en el hijo de Jessé. ¡Israel, a tus estancias! ¡Provee ahora en tu casa, David! Entonces Israel se fue a sus estancias

17 Mas reinó Roboam sobre los hijos de Israel que moraban en las ciudades de Judá

18 Y el rey Roboam envió a Adoram, que estaba sobre los tributos; pero le apedreó todo Israel, y murió. Entonces el rey Roboam se esforzó a subir en un carro, y huir a Jerusalén

19 Así se rebeló Israel de la casa de David hasta hoy

20 Y aconteció, que oyendo todo Israel que Jeroboam había vuelto, enviaron y le llamaron a la congregación, y le hicieron rey sobre todo Israel, sin quedar tribu alguna que siguiera la casa de David, sino sólo la tribu de Judá

21 Y cuando Roboam vino a Jerusalén, juntó toda la casa de Judá y la tribu de Benjamín, ciento ochenta mil hombres escogidos de guerra, para hacer guerra a la casa de Israel, y reducir el reino a Roboam hijo de Salomón

22 Mas vino palabra del SEÑOR a Semaías varón de Dios, diciendo

23 Habla a Roboam hijo de Salomón, rey de Judá, y a toda la casa de Judá y de Benjamín, y a los demás del pueblo, diciendo

24 Así dijo el SEÑOR: No vayáis, ni peleéis contra vuestros hermanos los hijos de Israel; volveos cada uno a su casa; porque este negocio yo lo he hecho. Y ellos oyeron la palabra de Dios, y volvieron, y se fueron, conforme a la palabra del SEÑOR

25 Y reedificó Jeroboam a Siquem en el monte de Efraín, y habitó en ella; y saliendo de allí, reedificó a Penuel

26 Y dijo Jeroboam en su corazón: Ahora se volverá el reino a la casa de David

27 si este pueblo subiere a sacrificar a la Casa del SEÑOR en Jerusalén; porque el corazón de este pueblo se convertirá a su señor Roboam rey de Judá, y me matarán a mí, y se tornarán a Roboam rey de Judá

28 Y habiendo tenido consejo, hizo el rey dos becerros de oro, y dijo al pueblo: Harto habéis subido a Jerusalén; he aquí tus dioses, oh Israel, que te hicieron subir de la tierra de Egipto

29 Y puso uno en Bet-el, y el otro puso en Dan

30 Y esto fue ocasión de pecado; porque el pueblo iba a adorar delante del uno, hasta Dan

31 Hizo también casa de lugares altos, e hizo sacerdotes de entre lo más bajo del pueblo, que no eran de los hijos de Leví

32 Entonces instituyó Jeroboam solemnidad en el mes octavo, a los quince del mes, conforme a la solemnidad que se celebraba en Judá; y sacrificó sobre un altar. Así hizo en Bet-el, sacrificando a los becerros que había hecho. Ordenó también en Bet-el sacerdotes de los lugares altos que él había fabricado

33 Sacrificó pues sobre el altar que él había hecho en Bet-el, a los quince del mes octavo, el mes que él había inventado de su corazón; e hizo fiesta a los hijos de Israel, y subió al altar para quemar incienso

Chapter 12

Rehoboam's accession, The people's petition, His rough answer. (1-15) Ten tribes revolt. (16-24) Jeroboam's idolatry. (25-33)

Verses 1-15 The tribes complained not to Rehoboam of his father's idolatry, and revolt from God. That which was the greatest grievance, was none to them; so careless were they in matters of religion, if they might live at case, and pay no taxes. Factious spirits will never want something to complain of. And when we see the Scripture account of Solomon's reign; the peace, wealth, and prosperity Israel then enjoyed; we cannot doubt but that their charges were false, or far beyond the truth. Rehoboam answered the people according to the counsel of the young men. Never was man more blinded by pride, and desire of arbitrary power, than which nothing is more fatal. God's counsels were hereby fulfilled. He left Rehoboam to his own folly, and hid from his eyes the things which belonged to his peace, that the kingdom might be rent from him. God serves his own wise and righteous purposes by the imprudences and sins of men. Those that lose the kingdom of heaven, throw it away, as Rehoboam, by wilfulness and folly.

Verses 16-24 The people speak unbecomingly of David. How soon are good men, and their good services to the public, forgotten ! These considerations should reconcile us to our losses and troubles, that God is the Author of them, and our brethren the instruments: let us not meditate revenge. Rehoboam and his people hearkened to the word of the Lord. When we know God's mind, we must submit, how much soever it crosses our own mind. If we secure the favour of God, not all the universe can hurt us.

Verses 25-33 Jeroboam distrusted the providence of God; he would contrive ways and means, and sinful ones too, for his own safety. A practical disbelief of God's all-sufficiency is at the bottom of all our departures from him. Though it is probable he meant his worship for Jehovah the God of Israel, it was contrary to the Divine law, and dishonourable to the Divine majesty to be thus represented. The people might be less shocked at worshipping the God of Israel under an image, than if they had at once been asked to worship Baal; but it made way for that idolatry. Blessed Lord, give us grace to reverence thy temple, thine ordinances, thine house of prayer, thy sabbaths, and never more, like Jeroboam, to set up in our hearts any idol of abomination. Be thou to us every thing precious; do thou reign and rule in our hearts, the hope of glory.

INTRODUCTION TO 1 KINGS 12

This chapter relates Rehoboam's going to Shechem to be made king, and Jeroboam's return from Egypt, 1Ki 12:1,2, the people's request to Rehoboam to be eased of their taxes, as the condition of making him king, 1Ki 12:3,4, his answer to them, after three days, having had the advice both of the old and young men, which latter he followed, and gave in a rough answer, 1Ki 12:5-15, upon which ten tribes revolted from him, and two abode by him, 1Ki 12:16-20, wherefore he meditated a war against the ten tribes, but was forbid by the Lord to engage in it, 1Ki 12:21-24 and Jeroboam, in order to establish his kingdom, and preserve the people from a revolt to the house of David, because of the temple worship at Jerusalem, devised a scheme of idolatrous worship in his own territories, 1Ki 12:25-33.
