Josué 6

1 Pero Jericó estaba cerrada, bien cerrada, a causa de los hijos de Israel; nadie entraba, ni salía

2 Mas el SEÑOR dijo a Josué: Mira, yo he entregado en tu mano a Jericó y a su rey, con sus varones de guerra

3 Cercaréis pues la ciudad todos los hombres de guerra, yendo alrededor de la ciudad una vez; y esto haréis seis días

4 Y siete sacerdotes llevarán siete shofarot de jubileo delante del arca; y al séptimo día daréis siete vueltas a la ciudad, y los sacerdotes tocarán los shofarot

5 Y cuando tocaren prolongadamente el shofar de jubileo, así que oyereis la voz del shofar, todo el pueblo gritará a gran voz, y el muro de la ciudad caerá debajo de sí; entonces el pueblo subirá cada uno en derecho hacia adelante

6 Y llamando Josué hijo de Nun a los sacerdotes, les dijo: Llevad el arca del pacto, y siete sacerdotes lleven siete shofarot de jubileo delante del arca del SEÑOR

7 Y dijo al pueblo: Pasad, y cercad la ciudad; y los que están armados pasarán delante del arca del SEÑOR

8 Y así que Josué hubo hablado al pueblo, los siete sacerdotes, llevando los siete shofarot de jubileo, pasaron delante del arca del SEÑOR, y tocaron los shofarot; y el arca del pacto del SEÑOR los seguía

9 Y los armados iban delante de los sacerdotes que tocaban los shofarot, y la congregación iba detrás del arca, andando y tocando trompetas

10 Y Josué mandó al pueblo, diciendo: Vosotros no gritaréis, ni se oirá vuestra voz, ni saldrá palabra de vuestra boca, hasta el día que yo os diga: Gritad; entonces gritaréis

11 El arca pues del SEÑOR dio una vuelta alrededor de la ciudad, y volvieron luego al campamento, en el cual pasaron la noche

12 Y Josué se levantó de mañana, y los sacerdotes tomaron el arca del SEÑOR

13 Y los siete sacerdotes, llevando los siete shofarot de jubileo, fueron delante del arca del SEÑOR, andando siempre y tocando los shofarot; y los armados iban delante de ellos, y la congregación iba detrás del arca del SEÑOR; los sacerdotes andando y tocando los shofarot

14 Así dieron otra vuelta a la ciudad el segundo día, y volvieron al campamento; de esta manera hicieron por seis días

15 Y al séptimo día se levantaron cuando subía el alba, y dieron vuelta a la ciudad de la misma manera siete veces; solamente este día dieron vuelta alrededor de ella siete veces

16 Y cuando los sacerdotes tocaron los shofarot la séptima vez, Josué dijo al pueblo: Gritad, porque el SEÑOR os ha entregado la ciudad

17 Mas la ciudad será anatema al SEÑOR, ella con todas las cosas que están en ella; solamente Rahab la ramera vivirá, con todos los que estuvieren en casa con ella, por cuanto escondió los mensajeros que enviamos

18 Pero guardaos vosotros del anatema, que ni toquéis, ni toméis alguna cosa del anatema, para que no hagáis anatema el campamento de Israel, y lo turbéis

19 Mas todo el oro, y la plata, y vasos de bronce y de hierro, sea consagrado al SEÑOR, y venga al tesoro del SEÑOR

20 Entonces el pueblo gritó, y los sacerdotes tocaron los shofarot; y aconteció que cuando el pueblo hubo oído la voz del shofar, dio el pueblo el grito con gran vocerío, y el muro cayó a plomo. El pueblo subió luego a la ciudad, cada uno derecho hacia adelante, y la tomaron

21 Y destruyeron todo lo que había en la ciudad; hombres y mujeres, mozos y viejos, hasta los bueyes, las ovejas, y los asnos, a filo de espada

22 Mas Josué dijo a los dos varones que habían reconocido la tierra: Entrad en casa de la mujer ramera, y haced salir de allá a la mujer, y a todo lo que fuere suyo, como lo jurasteis

23 Y los jóvenes espías entraron, y sacaron a Rahab, a su padre, a su madre, a sus hermanos, y todo lo que era suyo; y también sacaron a toda su parentela, y los pusieron fuera en el campamento de Israel

24 Y quemaron a fuego la ciudad, y todo lo que en ella había; solamente pusieron en el tesoro de la casa del SEÑOR el oro, la plata, y los vasos de bronce y de hierro

25 Mas Josué dio la vida a Rahab la ramera, a la casa de su padre, y a todo lo que ella tenía; y habitó ella entre los israelitas hasta hoy; por cuanto escondió los mensajeros que Josué envió a reconocer a Jericó

26 Y en aquel tiempo Josué juró diciendo: Maldito sea delante del SEÑOR el hombre que se levantare y reedificare esta ciudad de Jericó. En su primogénito eche sus cimientos, y en su menor asiente sus puertas

27 Fue, pues, el SEÑOR con Josué, y su fama se divulgó por toda la tierra

Josué 6 Commentary

Chapter 6

The siege of Jericho. (1-5) The city is compassed. (6-16) Jericho is taken, Rahab and her family are saved. (17-27)

Verses 1-5 Jericho resolves Israel shall not be its master. It shut itself up, being strongly fortified both by art and nature. Thus were they foolish, and their hearts hardened to their destruction; the miserable case of all that strengthen themselves against the Almighty. God resolves Israel shall be its master, and that quickly. No warlike preparations were to be made. By the uncommon method of besieging the city, the Lord honoured the ark, as the symbol of his presence, and showed that all the victories were from him. The faith and patience of the people were proved and increased.

Verses 6-16 Wherever the ark went, the people attended it. God's ministers, by the trumpet of the everlasting gospel, which proclaims liberty and victory, must encourage the followers of Christ in their spiritual warfare. As promised deliverances must be expected in God's way, so they must be expected in his time. At last the people were to shout: they did so, and the walls fell. This was a shout of faith; they believed the walls of Jericho would fall. It was a shout of prayer; they cry to Heaven for help, and help came.

Verses 17-27 Jericho was to be a solemn and awful sacrifice to the justice of God, upon those who had filled up the measure of their sins. So He appoints, from whom, as creatures, they received their lives, and to whom, as sinners, they had forfeited them. Rahab perished not with them that believed not, ( Hebrews 11:31 ) . All her kindred were saved with her; thus faith in Christ brings salvation to the house, ( Acts 14:31 ) . She, and they with her, were plucked as brands from the burning. With Rahab, or with the men of Jericho; our portion must be assigned, as we posses or disregard the sign of salvation; even faith in Christ, which worketh by love. Let us remember what depends upon our choice, and let us choose accordingly. God shows the weight of a Divine curse; where it rests there is no getting from under it; for it brings ruin without remedy.

INTRODUCTION TO JOSHUA 6

In this chapter Joshua is assured, though Jericho was closely shut up, it should be delivered into his hands, Jos 6:1,2; and he is directed, with the army, to go round the city six days together, seven priests bearing the ark of the Lord, with seven trumpets sounding; and on the seventh day to go round it seven times in like manner, when its wall should fall, Jos 6:3-5; which order Joshua communicated to the priests, and to the people, and which was put into execution by them, with some other instructions he gave them, Jos 6:6-16; particularly that the city, and all in it, should be devoted to the Lord, and none spared, but Rahab and her family, Jos 6:17-19; the success was according to the assurance given by the Lord, Jos 6:20; when all in the city were destroyed, and that was burnt with fire, and the gold, silver, brass, and iron, brought into the house of the Lord, and Rahab and her father's household were saved alive, Jos 6:21-25; and the chapter is closed with an adjuration of Joshua, cursing the man that should rebuild the city; and with this observation, that the fame of Joshua upon this was spread abroad throughout the country, Jos 6:26,27.
