Jueces 12

1 Y juntándose los varones de Efraín, pasaron hacia el aquilón, y dijeron a Jefté: ¿Por qué fuiste a hacer guerra contra los hijos de Amón, y no nos llamaste para que fuéramos contigo? Nosotros quemaremos a fuego tu casa contigo

2 Y Jefté les respondió: Yo y mi pueblo, teníamos una gran contienda con los hijos de Amón, y os llamé, y no me defendisteis de sus manos

3 Viendo, pues, que tú no me defendíais, puse mi alma en mi palma, y pasé contra los hijos de Amón, y el SEÑOR los entregó en mi mano; ¿por qué pues habéis subido hoy contra mí para pelear conmigo

4 Y juntando Jefté a todos los varones de Galaad, peleó contra Efraín; y los de Galaad hirieron a Efraín, porque habían dicho: Vosotros sois fugitivos de Efraín, vosotros sois galaaditas entre Efraín y Manasés

5 Y los galaaditas tomaron los vados del Jordán a Efraín; y era que, cuando alguno de los de Efraín que había huido, decía, ¿pasaré? los de Galaad le preguntaban: ¿Eres tú efrateo? Si él respondía, no

7 Y Jefté juzgó a Israel seis años; luego murió Jefté, galaadita, y fue sepultado en una ciudad de Galaad

8 Después de él juzgó a Israel Ibzán de Belén

9 el cual tuvo treinta hijos y treinta hijas, las cuales casó fuera, y tomó de fuera treinta hijas para sus hijos; y juzgó a Israel siete años

10 Y murió Ibzán, y fue sepultado en Belén

11 Después de él juzgó a Israel Elón, zabulonita, el cual juzgó a Israel diez años

12 Y murió Elón, zabulonita, y fue sepultado en Ajalón en la tierra de Zabulón

13 Después de él juzgó a Israel Abdón hijo de Hilel, piratonita

14 Este tuvo cuarenta hijos y treinta nietos, que cabalgaban sobre setenta asnos; y juzgó a Israel ocho años

Chapter 12

Ephraimites quarrel with Jephthah. (1-7) Ibzan, Elon, and Abdon judge Israel. (8-15)

Verses 1-7 The Ephraimites had the same quarrel with Jephthah as with Gideon. Pride was at the bottom of the quarrel; only by that comes contention. It is ill to fasten names of reproach upon persons or countries, as is common, especially upon those under outward disadvantages. It often occasions quarrels that prove of ill consequence, as it did here. No contentions are so bitter as those between brethren or rivals for honour. What need we have to watch and pray against evil tempers! May the Lord incline all his people to follow after things which make for peace!

Verses 8-15 We have here a short account of three more of the judges of Israel. The happiest life of individuals, and the happiest state of society, is that which affords the fewest remarkable events. To live in credit and quiet, to be peacefully useful to those around us, to possess a clear conscience; but, above all, and without which nothing can avail, to enjoy communion with God our Saviour while we live, and to die at peace with God and man, form the substance of all that a wise man can desire.
