Luke 24:38 Meaning and Commentary

Luke 24:38

And he said unto them, why are ye troubled
Who had more reason to rejoice, and be glad, as they were when they knew that it was Jesus: and why do thoughts arise in your hearts?
whether what they saw was Jesus, or an apparition, which gave them a great deal of trouble and uneasiness, and filled them with fright and terror; as it was, and is usual with persons when they fancy they see a spirit, or an apparition; see ( Matthew 14:26 ) .

Luke 24:38 In-Context

36 And [while] they were saying these [things], he himself stood there among them.
37 But they were startled and became terrified, [and] thought [they] had seen a ghost.
38 And he said to them, "Why are you frightened? And for what [reason] do doubts arise in your hearts?
39 Look at my hands and my feet, that I am I myself! Touch me and see, because a ghost does not have flesh and bones, as {you see that I have}."
40 And [when he] had said this, he showed them [his] hands and [his] feet.
