Ezekiel 38

Prophecy about Gog and Future Invasion of Israel

1 And the word of the LORD came to me saying,
2 "Son of man, set your face toward 1Gog of the land of 2Magog, the prince of 3Rosh, 4Meshech and 5Tubal, and prophesy against him
3 and say, 'Thus says the Lord GOD, "Behold, I am against you, O Gog, prince of Rosh, Meshech and Tubal.
4 "I will turn you about and put hooks into your jaws, and I will 6bring you out, and all your army, 7horses and horsemen, all of them splendidly attired, a great company with buckler and shield, all of them wielding swords;
5 8Persia, 9Ethiopia and 10Put with them, all of them with shield and helmet;
6 11Gomer with all its troops; 12Beth-togarmah * from the remote parts of the north with all its troops -many peoples with you.
7 "13Be prepared, and prepare yourself, you and all your companies that are assembled about you, and be a guard for them.
8 "14After many days you will be summoned; in the latter years you will come into the land that is restored from the sword, whose inhabitants have been 15gathered from many nations to the 16mountains of Israel which had been a continual waste; but its people were brought out from the nations, and they are 17living securely, all of them.
9 "You will go up, you will come 18like a storm; you will be like a 19cloud covering the land, you and all your troops, and many peoples with you."
10 'Thus says the Lord GOD, "It will come about on that day, that thoughts will come into your mind and you will 20devise an evil plan,
11 and you will say, 'I will go up against the land of 21unwalled villages. I will go against those who are 22at rest, that live securely, all of them living without walls and having no bars or gates,
12 to 23capture spoil and to seize plunder, to turn your hand against the waste places which are now inhabited, and against the people who are gathered from the nations, who have acquired cattle and goods, who live at the center of the world.'
13 "24Sheba and 25Dedan and the merchants of 26Tarshish with all its villages will say to you, 'Have you come to capture spoil? Have you assembled your company to seize plunder, to carry away silver and gold, to take away cattle and goods, to capture great 27spoil?' "'
14 "Therefore prophesy, son of man, and say to Gog, 'Thus says the Lord GOD, "On that day when My people Israel are 28living securely, will you not know it?
15 "29You will come from your place out of the remote parts of the north, you and many peoples with you, all of them riding on horses, a great assembly and a mighty army;
16 and you will come up against My people Israel like a cloud to cover the land. It shall come about in the last days that I will bring you against My land, so that the nations may 30know Me when I am 31sanctified through you before their eyes, O Gog."
17 'Thus says the Lord GOD, "Are you the one of whom I spoke in former days through My servants the prophets of Israel, who 32prophesied in those days for many years that I would bring you against them?
18 "It will come about on that day, when Gog comes against the land of Israel," declares the Lord GOD, "that My fury will mount up in My 33anger.
19 "In My 34zeal and in My blazing wrath I declare that on that day there will surely * be a great 35earthquake in the land of Israel.
20 "36The fish of the sea, the birds of the heavens, the beasts of the field, all the creeping things that creep on the earth, and all the men who are on the face of the earth will shake at My presence; the 37mountains also will be thrown down, the steep pathways will collapse and every wall will fall to the ground.
21 "I will call for a 38sword against him on all My mountains," declares the Lord GOD. "39Every man's sword will be against his brother.
22 "With pestilence and with blood I will enter into 40judgment with him; and I will rain on him and on his troops, and on the many peoples who are with him, a torrential rain, with 41hailstones *, fire and brimstone.
23 "I will magnify Myself, sanctify Myself, and 42make Myself known in the sight of many nations; and they will know that I am the LORD."'

Ezekiel 38 Commentary

Chapter 38

The army and malice of Gog. (1-13) God's judgments. (14-23)

Verses 1-13 These events will be in the latter days. It is supposed these enemies will come together to invade the land of Judea, and God will defeat them. God not only sees who are now the enemies of his church, but he foresees who will be so, and lets them know by his word that he is against them; though they join together, the wicked shall not be unpunished.

Verses 14-23 The enemy should make a formidable descent upon the land of Israel. When Israel dwell safely under the Divine protection, shalt not thou be made to know it by finding that endeavours to destroy them are made in vain? Promises of security are treasured up in the word of God, against the troubles and dangers the church may be brought into in the latter days. In the destruction of sinners, God makes it appear that he is a great and holy God. We should desire and pray daily. Father, glorify thine own name.

Chapter Summary

INTRODUCTION TO EZEKIEL 38

This chapter gives an account of an enemy of the Jews, under the name of Gog, that shall invade their land, and disturb their peace, after they are settled in it; who is described by the countries over which he rules; and against whom the prophet is bid to set his face, and prophesy of him, the Lord being against him; and who would cause him to return from Judea unsuccessful, Eze 38:1-4, the number of his confederates, their warlike accoutrements and preparations for the invasion of the land of Israel, are foretold, Eze 38:4-9, his wicked designs and intentions to spoil and plunder the inhabitants of it, Eze 38:10-12, the notice taken of his projects by the merchants of Tarshish and others, Eze 38:13,14, his coming up to invade the land is again observed for the certainty of it; and the place from whence, and the time when he should come, are mentioned, as well as God's design in it, and which had been before predicted by his prophets, Eze 38:14-17, and the chapter is concluded with a denunciation of divine wrath, which shall be terrible to all the inhabitants of the earth, and to all creatures in heaven, earth, and sea; when he and his forces shall be destroyed by the sword, by pestilence, and by dreadful storms and tempests, Eze 38:18-23, of which destruction a fuller account is given in the next chapter.

the preceding prophecy did, as the copulative and shows; which predicts the restoration and conversion of the Jews; the union of their tribes under the King Messiah; and their settlement in their own land: and this respects some disturbance they should meet with upon it, for a short time, by a powerful enemy hereafter described:
