Numbers 3

Levites to Be Priesthood

1 1Now these are the records of the generations of Aaron and Moses at the time when the LORD spoke with Moses on Mount Sinai.
2 2These then are the names of the sons of Aaron: Nadab the firstborn, and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar.
3 These are the names of the sons of Aaron, the 3anointed priests, whom he [a]ordained * to serve as priests.
4 4But Nadab and Abihu died before the LORD when they offered strange fire before the LORD in the wilderness of Sinai; and they had no children. So Eleazar and Ithamar served as priests [b]in the lifetime of their father Aaron.
5 Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,
6 "5Bring the tribe of Levi near and set them before Aaron the priest, that they may serve him.
7 "They shall perform the duties for [c]him and for the whole congregation before the tent of meeting, to do the 6service of the tabernacle.
8 "They shall also keep all the furnishings of the tent of meeting, along with the duties of the sons of Israel, to do the service of the tabernacle.
9 "You shall thus 7give the Levites to Aaron and to his sons; they are wholly given to him from among the sons of Israel.
10 "So you shall appoint Aaron and his sons that 8they may keep their priesthood, but 9the [d]layman who comes near shall be put to death."
11 Again the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,
12 "Now, behold, I 10have taken the Levites from among the sons of Israel instead of every 11firstborn, the first issue of the womb among the sons of Israel. So the Levites shall be Mine.
13 "For 12all the firstborn are Mine; on the day that I struck down all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, I sanctified to Myself all the firstborn in Israel, from man to beast. They shall be Mine; I am the LORD."
14 Then the LORD spoke to Moses 13in the wilderness of Sinai, saying,
15 "14Number the sons of Levi by their fathers' households, by their families; every male from a month old and upward you shall number."
16 So Moses numbered them according to the word of the LORD, just as he had been commanded.
17 15These then are the sons of Levi by their names: Gershon and Kohath and Merari.
18 These are the names of the 16sons of Gershon by their families: Libni and Shimei;
19 and the sons of Kohath by their families: Amram and Izhar, Hebron and Uzziel;
20 and the sons of Merari by their families: Mahli and Mushi. These are the families of the Levites according to their fathers' households.
21 Of Gershon was the family of the Libnites and the family of the Shimeites; these were the families of the Gershonites.
22 Their numbered men, in the numbering of every male from a month old and upward, even their numbered men were 7,500 * * *.
23 The families of the Gershonites were to camp behind the tabernacle westward,
24 and the leader of the fathers' households of the Gershonites was Eliasaph the son of Lael.

Duties of the Priests

25 Now 17the duties of the sons of Gershon in the tent of meeting involved the tabernacle and 18the tent, its covering, and 19the screen for the doorway of the tent of meeting,
26 and 20the hangings of the court, and 21the screen for the doorway of the court which is around the tabernacle and the altar, and its cords, according to all the service concerning them.
27 Of Kohath was the family of the Amramites and the family of the Izharites and the family of the Hebronites and the family of the Uzzielites; these were the families of the Kohathites.
28 In the numbering of every male from a month old and upward, there were 8,600 * *, performing the duties of the sanctuary.
29 The families of the sons of Kohath were to camp on the southward side of the tabernacle,
30 and the leader of the fathers' households of the Kohathite families was Elizaphan the son of Uzziel.
31 Now 22their duties involved 23the ark, 24the table, 25the lampstand, 26the altars, and the utensils of the sanctuary with which they minister, and the screen, and all the service concerning them;
32 and Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest was the chief of the leaders of Levi, and had the oversight of those who perform the duties of the sanctuary.
33 Of Merari was the family of the Mahlites and the family of the Mushites; these were the families of Merari.
34 Their numbered men in the numbering of every male from a month old and upward, were 6,200 * *.
35 The leader of the fathers' households of the families of Merari was Zuriel the son of Abihail. They were to 27camp on the northward side of the tabernacle.
36 Now the appointed duties of the sons of Merari involved the frames of the tabernacle, its bars, its pillars, its sockets, all its equipment, and the service concerning them,
37 and the pillars around the court with their sockets and their pegs and their cords.
38 Now those who were to 28camp before the tabernacle eastward, before the tent of meeting toward the sunrise, are Moses and Aaron and his sons, performing the duties of the sanctuary for the obligation of the sons of Israel; but 29the layman coming near was to be put to death.
39 All the numbered men of the Levites, whom Moses and Aaron numbered at the command of the LORD by their families, every male from a month old and upward, were 22,000 * *.

Firstborn Redeemed

40 Then the LORD said to Moses, "30Number every firstborn male of the sons of Israel from a month old and upward, and make a list of their names.
41 "You 31shall take the Levites for Me, I am the LORD, instead of all the firstborn among the sons of Israel, and the cattle of the Levites instead of all the firstborn among the cattle of the sons of Israel."
42 So Moses numbered all the firstborn among the sons of Israel, just as the LORD had commanded him;
43 and all the firstborn males by the number of names from a month old and upward, for their numbered men were 32 22,273 * * * * *.
44 Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,
45 "33Take the Levites instead of all the firstborn among the sons of Israel and the cattle of the Levites. And the Levites shall be Mine; I am the LORD.
46 "34For the ransom of the 273 * * of the firstborn of the sons of Israel who are in excess beyond the Levites,
47 you shall take 35five shekels apiece, per head; you shall take them in 36terms of the shekel of the sanctuary (37the shekel is twenty gerahs ),
48 and give the money, the ransom of those who are in excess among them, to Aaron and to his sons."
49 So Moses took the ransom money from those who were in excess, beyond those ransomed by the Levites;
50 from the firstborn of the sons of Israel he took the money in terms of the shekel of the sanctuary, 1,365 * * * *.
51 Then Moses gave the ransom money to Aaron and to his sons, at the command of the LORD, just as the LORD had commanded Moses.

Numbers 3 Commentary

Chapter 3

The sons of Aaron, The Levites taken instead of the first-born. (1-13) The Levites numbered by their families, Their duties. (14-39) The first-born are numbered. (40-51)

Verses 1-13 There was much work belonging to the priests' office, and there were now only Aaron and his two sons to do it; God appoints the Levites to attend them. Those whom God finds work for, he will find help for. The Levites were taken instead of the first-born. When He that made us, saves us, as the first-born of Israel were saved, we are laid under further obligations to serve him faithfully. God's right to us by redemption, confirms the right he has to us by creation.

Verses 14-39 The Levites were in three classes, according to the sons of Levi; Gershon, Kohath, and Merari; and these were subdivided into families. The posterity of Moses were not at all honoured or privileged, but stood upon the level with other Levites; thus it was plain, that Moses did not seek the advancement of his own family, or to secure any honours to it. The tribe of Levi was by much the least of all the tribes. God's chosen are but a little flock in comparison with the world.

Verses 40-51 The number of the first-born, and that of the Levites, came near to each other. Known unto God are all his works beforehand; there is an exact proportion between them, and so it will appear, when they are compared together. The small number of first-born, over and above the number of the Levites, were to be redeemed, and the redemption-money given to Aaron. The church is called the church of the first-born, which is redeemed, not as they were, with silver and gold; but, being devoted by sin to the justice of God, is ransomed with the precious blood of the Son of God. All men are the Lord's by creation, and all true christians are his by redemption. Each should know his own post and duty; nor can any service required by such a Master be rightly accounted mean or hard.

Chapter Summary

INTRODUCTION TO NUMBERS 3

In this chapter an account is given of the genealogy of the priests and Levites, and of the gift of the Levites to the priests, of the numbering of them, and the service they were to perform; and first of the priests, the sons of Aaron, Nu 3:1-4; and then of the Levites, as given unto them, to wait upon them, and assist them, Nu 3:5-10; and these were taken instead of the firstborn, Nu 3:11-13; and ordered to be numbered, which was done accordingly by their families, Nu 3:14-20; and the sum of each is given, and the particular work assigned to them; of the Gershonites, Nu 3:21-26; of the Kohathites, Nu 3:27-32; of the Merarites, Nu 3:33-38; the sum total of them is given, Nu 3:39; then the firstborn of the children of Israel, from a month old are ordered to be numbered, and were, Nu 3:40-43; and these appearing to be more in number than the Levites, by two hundred seventy three a direction is given that the two hundred seventy three should be redeemed at the rate of five, shekels apiece, and the money paid to Aaron and his sons, Nu 3:44-48; which was accordingly done, Nu 3:49-51.
