John 1:19-51

Listen to John 1:19-51

The Testimony of John

This is 1the testimony of John, when 2the Jews sent to him priests and Levites 3from Jerusalem to ask him, "Who are you?"
And he confessed and did not deny, but confessed, "4I am not [a]the Christ."
They asked him, "What then? Are you 5Elijah?" And he said, "I am not." "Are you 6the Prophet?" And he answered, "No."
Then they said to him, "Who are you, so that we may give an answer to those who sent us? What do you say about yourself?"
He said, "I am 7A VOICE OF ONE CRYING IN THE WILDERNESS, 'MAKE STRAIGHT THE WAY OF THE LORD,' as Isaiah the prophet said."
Now they had been sent from the Pharisees.
They asked him, and said to him, "Why then are you baptizing, if you are not the [b]Christ, nor Elijah, nor 8the Prophet?"
John answered them saying, "9I baptize [c]in water, but among you stands One whom you do not know.
"It is 10He who comes after me, the 11thong of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie."
These things took place in Bethany 12beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing.
The next day he saw Jesus coming to him and said, "Behold, 13the Lamb of God who 14takes away the sin of the world!
"This is He on behalf of whom I said, '15After me comes a Man who [d]has a higher rank than I, 16for He existed before me.'
"I did not recognize [e]Him, but so that He might be manifested to Israel, I came baptizing [f]in water."
John 17testified saying, "18I have seen the Spirit descending as a dove out of heaven, and He remained upon Him.
"I did not recognize [g]Him, but He who sent me to baptize [h]in water said to me, 'He upon whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining upon Him, 19this is the One who baptizes [i]in the Holy Spirit.'
"I myself have seen, and have testified that this is 20the Son of God."

Jesus' Public Ministry, First Converts

Again 21the next day John was standing [j]with two of his disciples,
and he looked at Jesus as He walked, and said, "Behold, 22the Lamb of God!"
The two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus.
And Jesus turned and saw them following, and said to them, "What do you seek?" They said to Him, "23Rabbi (which translated means Teacher ), where are You staying?"
He said to them, "Come, and you will see." So they came and saw where He was staying; and they stayed with Him that day, for it was about the [k]tenth hour.
24One of the two who heard John speak and followed Him, was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother.
He found first his own brother Simon and said to him, "We have found the 25Messiah " (which translated means [l]Christ ).
He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, "You are Simon the son of [m]26John; you shall be called 27Cephas " (which is translated [n]28Peter ).
29The next day He purposed to go into 30Galilee, and He found 31Philip. And Jesus said to him, "32Follow Me."
Now 33Philip was from 34Bethsaida, of the city of Andrew and Peter.
35Philip found 36Nathanael and said to him, "We have found Him of whom 37Moses in the Law and also 38the Prophets wrote -Jesus of 39Nazareth, 40the son of Joseph."
Nathanael said to him, "41Can any good thing come out of Nazareth?" 42Philip said to him, "Come and see."
Jesus saw Nathanael coming to Him, and said of him, "Behold, an 43Israelite indeed, in whom there is no deceit!"
Nathanael said to Him, "How do You know me?" Jesus answered and said to him, "Before 44Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you."
Nathanael answered Him, "45Rabbi, You are 46the Son of God; You are the 47King of Israel."
Jesus answered and said to him, "Because I said to you that I saw you under the fig tree, do you believe? You will see greater things than these."
And He said to him, "Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see 48the heavens opened and 49the angels of God ascending and descending on 50the Son of Man."
