Thosepassing by were hurlingabuse at Him, 13wagging their heads, and saying, "Ha! You who are going to 14destroy the temple and rebuild it in threedays,

In the sameway the chiefpriestsalso, along with the scribes, were mocking Him amongthemselves and saying, "15He savedothers; He cannot*saveHimself.

"Let this Christ, 16the King of Israel, nowcomedown from the cross, so that we may see and believe!" 17Those who were crucified with Him were alsoinsulting Him.

18When the 19sixthhourcame, darknessfellover the wholelanduntil the 20ninthhour.

At the 21ninthhourJesuscried out with a loudvoice, "22ELOI, ELOI, LAMASABACHTHANI?"which is translated, "MY GOD, MY GOD, WHY* HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME?"

When some of the bystandersheard it, they began saying, "Behold, He is calling for Elijah."

Someoneran and filled a sponge with sourwine, put it on a reed, and gave Him a drink, saying, "Let us seewhetherElijah will come to take Him down."

23And Jesusuttered a loudcry, and breathed His last.

24And the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.

25When the centurion, who was standingright in front of Him, saw the way He breathed His last, he said, "Trulythisman was the Son of God!"

26There were also some womenlooking on from a distance, amongwhom were MaryMagdalene, and Mary the mother of James27the Less and Joses, and 28Salome.

When He was in Galilee, they used to follow Him and 29minister to Him; and there were manyotherwomen who came up with Him to Jerusalem.

Joseph of Arimatheacame, a 32prominentmember of the Council, whohimself was 33waiting for the kingdom of God; and he 34gathered up courage and went in beforePilate, and asked for the body of Jesus.

Pilatewonderedif He was dead by thistime, and summoning the centurion, he questioned him as to whether He was alreadydead.

And ascertaining this from 35the centurion, he granted the body to Joseph.

Joseph bought a linencloth, took Him down, wrapped Him in the linencloth and laid Him in a tombwhich had beenhewn out in the rock; and he rolled a stoneagainst the entrance of the tomb.

36MaryMagdalene and Mary the mother of Joses were looking on to see where He was laid.
