Psalms 78:55 Meaning and Commentary

Psalms 78:55

He cast out the Heathen also before them
The seven nations, the Hittites, Girgashites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites, ( Deuteronomy 7:1 )

and divided them an inheritance by line:
the land of Canaan was divided among the nine tribes and a half by Joshua, the other two and a half having had their portion assigned them on the other side; this distribution was made very exactly by lot, by line, and measure, so that every tribe had their proper portion and inheritance; see ( Joshua 13:6-8 Joshua 13:32 ) ( 14:1-5 ) ,

and made the tribes of Israel to dwell in their tents;
in the cities, towns, villages, and houses of the Heathen cast out before them.

Psalms 78:55 In-Context

53 He guided them safely, and they weren't afraid. But the Red Sea swallowed up their enemies.
54 He brought his people to the border of his holy land. He led them to the central hill country he had taken by his power.
55 He drove the nations out to make room for his people. He gave to each family a piece of land to pass on to their children. He settled the tribes of Israel in their homes.
56 But they put God to the test. They refused to obey the Most High God. They didn't keep his laws.
57 Like their people who lived before them, they turned away from him and were not faithful. They were like a bow that doesn't shoot straight. They couldn't be trusted.
