Josafat, rey de Judá

1 Al rey Asá lo sucedió en el trono su hijo Josafat, quien se impuso a la fuerza sobre Israel.

2 Colocó tropas en todas las ciudades fortificadas de Judá, y guarniciones en el territorio de Judá y en las ciudades de Efraín que su padre Asá había conquistado.

3 El SEÑOR estuvo con Josafat porque siguió el ejemplo inicial de su padre,^[a] pues no buscó a los baales

4 sino al Dios de su padre, obedeció los mandamientos de Dios, y no siguió las prácticas de los israelitas.

5 Por eso el SEÑOR afirmó el reino en sus manos. Todo Judá le llevaba regalos, y Josafat llegó a tener muchas riquezas y recibió muchos honores.

6 Anduvo con orgullo en los caminos del SEÑOR, y hasta quitó de Judá los santuarios paganos y las imágenes de la diosa Aserá.

7 En el año tercero de su reinado, Josafat envió a sus oficiales Ben Jayil, Abdías, Zacarías, Natanael y Micaías, para que instruyeran a la gente en las ciudades de Judá.

8 Con ellos fueron los levitas Semaías, Netanías, Zebadías, Asael, Semiramot, Jonatán, Adonías, Tobías y Tobadonías, y también los sacerdotes Elisama y Jorán.

9 Llevaron consigo el libro de la ley del SEÑOR para instruir a los habitantes de Judá. Así que recorrieron todas las ciudades de Judá, enseñando al pueblo.

10 Todos los reinos de las naciones vecinas de Judá sintieron un miedo profundo hacia el SEÑOR y no se atrevieron a declararle la guerra a Josafat.

11 Aun algunos filisteos le llevaron a Josafat, como tributo, regalos y plata. Los árabes también le llevaron siete mil setecientos carneros y siete mil setecientos machos cabríos.

12 Josafat se hizo cada vez más poderoso. Construyó en Judá fortalezas y lugares de almacenamiento,

13 y tenía muchas provisiones en las ciudades. En Jerusalén contaba con un regimiento de soldados muy valientes,

14 cuyo registro, según sus familias patriarcales, es el siguiente:Jefes de mil soldados en Judá:Adnás, el comandante, al frente de trescientos mil soldados.

15 Le seguía Johanán, al frente de doscientos ochenta mil soldados;

16 le seguía Amasías hijo de Zicrí, que se ofreció voluntariamente para servir al SEÑOR, y estaba al frente de doscientos mil soldados.

17 De Benjamín:Eliadá, guerrero valiente, al frente de doscientos mil soldados que portaban arcos y escudos.

18 Le seguía Jozabad, al frente de ciento ochenta mil soldados adiestrados para la guerra.

19 Todos ellos estaban al servicio del rey, sin contar los que este había destinado para las ciudades fortificadas de todo Judá.

Chapter 17

Jehoshaphat promotes religion in Judah, His prosperity.

- Jehoshaphat found his people generally very ignorant, and therefore endeavoured to have them well taught. The public teaching of the word of God forms, in all ages, the great method of promoting the power of godliness. Thereby the understanding is informed, the conscience is awakened and directed. We have a particular account of Jehoshaphat's prosperity. But it was not his formidable army that restrained the neighbouring nations from attempting any thing against Israel, but the fear of God which fell upon them, when Jehoshaphat reformed his country, and set up a preaching ministry in it. The ordinances of God are more the strength and safety of a kingdom, than soldiers and weapons of war. The Bible requires use to notice the hand of God in every event, yet this is little regarded. But let all employ the talents they have: be faithful, even in that which is little. Set up the worship of God in your houses. The charge of a family is important. Why should you not instruct them as Jehoshaphat did his subjects, in the book of the law of the Lord. But be consistent. Do not recommend one thing, and practise another. Begin with yourselves. Seek to the Lord God of Israel, then call upon children and servants to follow your example.
