Atalía y Joás

1 Cuando Atalía, madre de Ocozías, vio que su hijo había muerto, tomó medidas para eliminar a toda la familia real.

2 Pero Josaba, que era hija del rey Jorán y hermana de Ocozías, raptó a Joás hijo de Ocozías cuando los príncipes estaban a punto de ser asesinados. Metiéndolo en un dormitorio con su nodriza, logró esconderlo de Atalía, de modo que no lo mataron.

3 Seis años estuvo Joás escondido con su nodriza en el templo del SEÑOR, mientras Atalía reinaba en el país.

4 En el séptimo año, el sacerdote Joyadá mandó llamar a los capitanes,^[a] a los quereteos y a los guardias, para que se presentaran ante él en el templo del SEÑOR. Allí en el templo hizo un pacto con ellos y les tomó juramento. Luego les mostró al hijo del rey,

5 y les dio estas órdenes: «Hagan lo siguiente: Una tercera parte de los que están de servicio el sábado vigilará el palacio real;

6 otra tercera parte, la puerta de Sur; y la otra tercera parte, la puerta detrás del cuartel. Harán la guardia del templo por turnos.

7 Los dos grupos que están libres el sábado protegerán al rey en el templo del SEÑOR.

8 Arma en mano, rodeen por completo al rey; y si alguien se atreve a penetrar las filas,^[b] mátenlo. ¡No dejen solo al rey, vaya donde vaya!»

9 Los capitanes cumplieron con todo lo que el sacerdote Joyadá les había ordenado. Cada uno reunió a sus hombres, tanto a los que estaban de servicio el sábado como a los que estaban libres, y se presentaron ante Joyadá.

10 Este repartió entre los capitanes las lanzas y los escudos del rey David, que estaban guardados en el templo del SEÑOR.

11 Arma en mano, los guardias tomaron sus puestos alrededor del rey, cerca del altar, y desde el lado sur hasta el lado norte del templo.

12 Entonces Joyadá sacó al hijo del rey, le puso la corona y le entregó una copia del pacto.^[c] Luego lo ungieron, y todos aplaudieron, gritando: «¡Viva el rey!»

13 Cuando Atalía oyó la gritería de los guardias y de la tropa, fue al templo del SEÑOR, donde estaba la gente.

14 Al ver que el rey estaba de pie junto a la columna, como era la costumbre, y que los capitanes y músicos estaban a su lado, y que toda la gente tocaba alegre las trompetas, Atalía se rasgó las vestiduras y gritó: «¡Traición! ¡Traición!»

15 Entonces el sacerdote Joyadá, como no quería que la mataran en el templo del SEÑOR, ordenó a los capitanes que estaban al mando de las fuerzas: «Sáquenla de entre las filas; y si alguien se pone de su lado, ¡mátenlo a filo de espada!»

16 Así que la apresaron y la llevaron al palacio por la puerta de la caballería, y allí la mataron.

17 Luego Joyadá hizo un pacto entre el SEÑOR, el rey y la gente para que fueran el pueblo del SEÑOR; también hizo un pacto entre el rey y el pueblo.

18 Entonces toda la gente fue al templo de Baal y lo derribó. Destruyeron los altares y los ídolos, y enfrente de los altares degollaron a Matán, sacerdote de Baal.El sacerdote Joyadá apostó guardias en el templo del SEÑOR

19 y, acompañado de los capitanes y de los quereteos, los guardias y todo el pueblo, llevó al rey desde el templo del SEÑOR hasta el palacio real. Entraron juntos por la puerta del cuartel, y Joás se sentó en el trono real.

20 Todo el pueblo estaba alegre, y tranquila la ciudad, pues habían matado a Atalía a filo de espada en el palacio.

21 Joás tenía siete años cuando ascendió al trono.

Chapter 11

Athaliah usurps the government of Judah, Jehoash made king. (1-12) Athaliah put to death. (13-16) The worship of the Lord restored. (17-21)

Verses 1-12 Athaliah destroyed all she knew to be akin to the crown. Jehoash, one of the king's sons, was hid. Now was the promise made to David bound up in one life only, and yet it did not fail. Thus to the Son of David, the Lord, according to his promise, will secure a spiritual seed, hidden sometimes, and unseen, but hidden in God's pavilion, and unhurt. Six years Athaliah tyrannized. Then the king was brought forward. A child indeed, but he had a good guardian, and, what was better, a good God to go to With such joy and satisfaction must the kingdom of Christ be welcomed into our hearts, when his throne is set up there, and Satan the usurper is cast out. Say, Let the King, even Jesus, live, for ever live and reign in my soul, and in all the world.

Verses 13-16 Athaliah hastened her own destruction. She herself was the greatest traitor, and yet was first and loudest in crying, Treason, treason! The most guilty are commonly the most forward to reproach others.

Verses 17-21 King and people would cleave most firmly to each other, when both had joined themselves to the Lord. It is well with a people, when all the changes that pass over them help to revive, strengthen, and advance the interests of religion among them. Covenants are of use, both to remind us of, and bind us to, the duties already binding on us. They immediately abolished idolatry; and, pursuant to the covenant with one another, they expressed mutual readiness to help each other. The people rejoiced, and Jerusalem was quiet. The way for people to be joyful and at peace, is to engage fully in the service of God; for the voice of joy and thanksgiving is in the dwellings of the righteous, but there is no peace for the wicked.

This chapter relates how that Joash the son of Ahaziah, king of Judah, being hid and preserved, when his grandmother murdered all the seed royal, after six years was produced, 2Ki 11:1-3, when Jehoiada the priest set a sufficient guard about him, and the king's house, and anointed him king, 2Ki 11:4-12, and Athaliah his grandmother, who had reigned six years, was put to death by the order of the priest, 2Ki 10:13-16, and then a covenant was made between the Lord, and the king, and the people, and between the king and the people; and he was placed on the throne, to the satisfaction of the people, and the quiet thereof, 2Ki 10:17-21.
