Números 32

Rubén y Gad se establecen en Transjordania

1 Las tribus de Rubén y Gad, que tenían mucho ganado, se dieron cuenta de que las tierras de Jazer y Galaad eran apropiadas para la ganadería.

2 Así que fueron a decirles a Moisés, al sacerdote Eleazar y a los jefes de la comunidad:

3 —Las tierras de Atarot, Dibón, Jazer, Nimrá, Hesbón, Elalé, Sebán, Nebo y Beón

4 las conquistó el SEÑOR para el pueblo de Israel, y son apropiadas para la ganadería de tus siervos.

5 Si nos hemos ganado tu favor, permítenos tomar esas tierras como heredad. No nos hagas cruzar el Jordán.

6 Entonces Moisés les dijo a los rubenitas y a los gaditas:—¿Les parece justo que sus hermanos vayan al combate mientras ustedes se quedan aquí sentados?

7 Los israelitas se han propuesto conquistar la tierra que el SEÑOR les ha dado; ¿no se dan cuenta de que esto los desanimaría?

8 ¡Esto mismo hicieron los padres de ustedes cuando yo los envié a explorar la tierra de Cades Barnea!

9 Fueron a inspeccionar la tierra en el valle de Escol y, cuando volvieron, desanimaron a los israelitas para que no entraran en la tierra que el SEÑOR les había dado.

10 Ese día el SEÑOR se encendió en ira y juró:

11 “Por no haberme seguido de todo corazón, ninguno de los mayores de veinte años que salieron de Egipto verá la tierra que juré darles a Abraham, Isaac y Jacob.

12 Ninguno de ellos la verá, con la sola excepción de Caleb hijo de Jefone, el quenizita, y Josué hijo de Nun, los cuales me siguieron de todo corazón”.

13 El SEÑOR se encendió en ira contra Israel, y los hizo vagar por el desierto cuarenta años, hasta que murió toda la generación que había pecado.

14 »¡Y ahora ustedes, caterva de pecadores, vienen en lugar de sus padres para aumentar la ira del SEÑOR contra Israel!

15 Si ustedes se niegan a seguir al SEÑOR, él volverá a dejar en el desierto a todo este pueblo, y ustedes serán la causa de su destrucción.

16 Entonces ellos se acercaron otra vez a Moisés, y le dijeron:—Vamos a construir corrales para el ganado, y a edificar ciudades para nuestros pequeños.

17 Sin embargo, tomaremos las armas y marcharemos al frente de los israelitas hasta llevarlos a su lugar. Mientras tanto, nuestros pequeños vivirán en ciudades fortificadas que los protejan de los habitantes del país.

18 No volveremos a nuestras casas hasta que cada uno de los israelitas haya recibido su heredad.

19 Nosotros no queremos compartir con ellos ninguna heredad al otro lado del Jordán, porque nuestra heredad está aquí, en el lado oriental del río.

20 Moisés les contestó:—Si están dispuestos a hacerlo así, tomen las armas y marchen al combate.

21 Crucen con sus armas el Jordán, y con la ayuda del SEÑOR luchen hasta que él haya quitado del camino a sus enemigos.

22 Cuando a su paso el SEÑOR haya sometido la tierra, entonces podrán ustedes regresar a casa, pues habrán cumplido con su deber hacia el SEÑOR y hacia Israel. Y con la aprobación del SEÑOR esta tierra será de ustedes.

23 »Pero si se niegan, estarán pecando contra el SEÑOR. Y pueden estar seguros de que no escaparán de su pecado.

24 Edifiquen ciudades para sus pequeños, y construyan corrales para su ganado, pero cumplan también lo que han prometido.

25 Los gaditas y los rubenitas le dijeron a Moisés:—Tus siervos harán tal como el Señor lo ha mandado.

26 Aquí en las ciudades de Galaad se quedarán nuestros pequeños, y todos nuestros ganados y rebaños,

27 pero tus siervos cruzarán con sus armas el Jordán para pelear a la vanguardia del SEÑOR, tal como él lo ha ordenado.

28 Así que Moisés dio las siguientes instrucciones al sacerdote Eleazar, y a Josué hijo de Nun y a los jefes de las familias patriarcales de las tribus de Israel:

29 —Si los gaditas y los rubenitas, armados para la guerra, cruzan el Jordán con ustedes y conquistan el país, como el SEÑOR quiere, ustedes les entregarán como heredad la tierra de Galaad.

30 Pero si no lo cruzan, ellos recibirán su heredad entre ustedes en Canaán.

31 Los gaditas y los rubenitas respondieron:—Tus siervos harán lo que el SEÑOR ha mandado.

32 Tal como él lo quiere, cruzaremos armados delante del SEÑOR a la tierra de Canaán. Pero nuestra heredad estará de este lado del Jordán.

33 Entonces Moisés entregó a los gaditas y rubenitas, y a la media tribu de Manasés hijo de José, el reino de Sijón, rey de los amorreos, y el reino de Og, rey de Basán. Les entregó la tierra con las ciudades que estaban dentro de sus fronteras, es decir, las ciudades de todo el país.

34 Los gaditas edificaron las ciudades de Dibón, Atarot, Aroer,

35 Atarot Sofán, Jazer, Yogbea,

36 Bet Nimrá y Bet Arán. Las edificaron como ciudades fortificadas, y construyeron corrales para sus rebaños.

37 También edificaron las ciudades de Hesbón, Elalé, Quiriatayin,

38 Nebo, Baal Megón y Sibma, y les cambiaron de nombre.

39 Los descendientes de Maquir hijo de Manasés fueron a Galaad y la conquistaron, echando de allí a los amorreos que la habitaban.

40 Entonces Moisés entregó Galaad a los maquiritas, que eran descendientes de Manasés, y ellos se establecieron allí.

41 Yaír hijo de Manasés capturó algunas aldeas y les puso por nombre Javot Yaír.

42 Noba capturó Quenat y sus aldeas, y a la región le dio su propio nombre.

Números 32 Commentary

Chapter 32

The tribes of Reuben and Gad request an inheritance on the east of Jordan. (1-5) Moses reproves the Reubenites and Gadites. (6-15) They explain their views, Moses consents. (16-27) They take possession of the land to the east of Jordan. (28-42)

Verses 1-5 Here is a proposal made by the Reubenites and Gadites, that the land lately conquered might be allotted to them. Two things common in the world might lead these tribes to make this choice; the lust of the eye, and the pride of life. There was much amiss in the principle they went upon; they consulted their own private convenience more than the public good. Thus to the present time, many seek their own things more than the things of Jesus Christ; and are led by worldly interests and advantages to take up short of the heavenly Canaan.

Verses 6-15 The proposal showed disregard to the land of Canaan, distrust of the Lord's promise, and unwillingness to encounter the difficulties and dangers of conquering and driving out the inhabitants of that land. Moses is wroth with them. It will becomes any of God's Israel to sit down unconcerned about the difficult and perilous concerns of their brethren, whether public or personal. He reminds them of the fatal consequences of the unbelief and faint-heartedness of their fathers, when they were, as themselves, just ready to enter Canaan. If men considered as they ought what would be the end of sin, they would be afraid of the beginning of it.

Verses 16-27 Here is the good effect of plain dealing. Moses, by showing their sin, and the danger of it, brought them to their duty, without murmuring or disputing. All men ought to consider the interests of others as well as their own; the law of love requires us to labour, venture, or suffer for each other as there may be occasion. They propose that their men of war should go ready armed before the children of Israel into the land of Canaan, and that they should not return till the conquest of Canaan was ended. Moses grants their request, but he warns them of the danger of breaking their word. If you fail, you sin against the Lord, and not against your brethren only; God will certainly reckon with you for it. Be sure your sin will find you out. Sin will surely find out the sinner sooner or later. It concerns us now to find our sins out, that we may repent of them, and forsake them, lest they find us out to our ruin.

Verses 28-42 Concerning the settlement of these tribes, observe, that they built the cities, that is, repaired them. They changed the names of them; probably they were idolatrous, therefore they should be forgotten. A spirit of selfishness, of seeking our own, not the things of Christ, when each one ought to assist others, is as dangerous as it is common. It is impossible to be sincere in the faith, sensible of the goodness of God, constrained by the love of Christ, sanctified by the power of the Holy Ghost, and yet be indifferent to the progress of religion, and the spiritual success of others, through love of ease, or fear of conflict. Let then your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

INTRODUCTION TO NUMBERS 32

This chapter relates, how that the tribes of Gad and Reuben requested a settlement in the country of Jazer and Gilead, being fit for the pasturage of their cattle, Nu 32:1-5 at which Moses at first was very much displeased, as being unreasonable, and tending to discourage the rest of the people; and as acting a part like that their fathers had done before them, which brought the wrath of God upon them, so that they all but two perished in the wilderness; and this he suggests would be the case again, if such measures were taken, Nu 32:6-15 upon which they explain themselves, and declare they had no intention of forsaking their brethren, but were willing to leave their children and cattle to the care of divine Providence, and go armed before Israel, until they were brought into, and settled in the land of Canaan; nor did they desire any part or inheritance in it, Nu 32:16-19, this satisfied Moses, and he agreed to it, that the land they requested should be their possession, provided the conditions were fulfilled by them, which they proposed, Nu 20:20-24, and which they again agreed unto, and promised to perform, Nu 32:25-27, wherefore Moses gave orders to Eleazar, Joshua, and the chief fathers of the tribes, to put them in possession of the land of Gilead on those conditions, Nu 32:28-30 and which were again promised that they would observe, Nu 32:31,32, and at the same time Moses made a grant of the kingdoms of Sihon and of Og to the tribes of Reuben and Gad, and to half the tribe of Manasseh, Nu 32:33 and the chapter is closed with an account of the cities built or repaired by the children of Gad and Reuben, Nu 32:34-38 and of the cities in Gilead taken and possessed by the children of Machir, and by Jair, who were of the tribe of Manasseh, Nu 32:39-42.
