These are the names of the sons of Israel who went to Egypt with Jacob, each with his family:

Reuben, Simeon, Levi and Judah;

4 Dan, Neftalí, Gad y Aser.

Dan and Naphtali; Gad and Asher.

The descendants of Jacob numbered seventy in all; Joseph was already in Egypt.

Now Joseph and all his brothers and all that generation died,

but the Israelites were exceedingly fruitful; they multiplied greatly, increased in numbers and became so numerous that the land was filled with them.
8 Tiempo después, subió al poder de Egipto un nuevo rey que no conocía nada de José ni de sus hechos.

Then a new king, to whom Joseph meant nothing, came to power in Egypt.
9 El rey le dijo a su pueblo: «Miren, el pueblo de Israel ahora es más numeroso y más fuerte que nosotros.

“Look,” he said to his people, “the Israelites have become far too numerous for us.
10 Tenemos que idear un plan para evitar que los israelitas sigan multiplicándose. Si no hacemos nada, y estalla una guerra, se aliarán con nuestros enemigos, pelearán contra nosotros, y luego se escaparán del reino».

Come, we must deal shrewdly with them or they will become even more numerous and, if war breaks out, will join our enemies, fight against us and leave the country.”
11 Por lo tanto, los egipcios esclavizaron a los israelitas y les pusieron capataces despiadados a fin de subyugarlos por medio de trabajos forzados. Los obligaron a construir las ciudades de Pitón y Ramsés como centros de almacenamiento para el rey.

So they put slave masters over them to oppress them with forced labor, and they built Pithom and Rameses as store cities for Pharaoh.
12 Sin embargo, cuanto más los oprimían, más los israelitas se multiplicaban y se esparcían, y tanto más se alarmaban los egipcios.

But the more they were oppressed, the more they multiplied and spread; so the Egyptians came to dread the Israelites
13 Por eso los egipcios los hacían trabajar sin compasión.

and worked them ruthlessly.
14 Les amargaban la vida forzándolos a hacer mezcla, a fabricar ladrillos y a hacer todo el trabajo del campo. Además, eran crueles en todas sus exigencias.

They made their lives bitter with harsh labor in brick and mortar and with all kinds of work in the fields; in all their harsh labor the Egyptians worked them ruthlessly.
15 Después, el faraón, rey de Egipto, dio la siguiente orden a las parteras hebreas Sifra y Puá:

The king of Egypt said to the Hebrew midwives, whose names were Shiphrah and Puah,
16 «Cuando ayuden a las mujeres hebreas en el parto, presten mucha atención durante el alumbramiento.<br /> Si el bebé es niño, mátenlo; pero si es niña, déjenla vivir».

“When you are helping the Hebrew women during childbirth on the delivery stool, if you see that the baby is a boy, kill him; but if it is a girl, let her live.”
17 Sin embargo, como las parteras temían a Dios, se negaron a obedecer las órdenes del rey, y también dejaron vivir a los varoncitos.

The midwives, however, feared God and did not do what the king of Egypt had told them to do; they let the boys live.
18 Entonces el rey de Egipto mandó llamar a las parteras:<br />—¿Por qué hicieron esto? —les preguntó—. ¿Por qué dejaron con vida a los varones?

Then the king of Egypt summoned the midwives and asked them, “Why have you done this? Why have you let the boys live?”
19 —Las mujeres hebreas no son como las egipcias —contestaron ellas—, son más vigorosas y dan a luz con tanta rapidez que siempre llegamos tarde.

The midwives answered Pharaoh, “Hebrew women are not like Egyptian women; they are vigorous and give birth before the midwives arrive.”
20 Por eso Dios fue bueno con las parteras, y los israelitas siguieron multiplicándose, y se hicieron cada vez más poderosos.

So God was kind to the midwives and the people increased and became even more numerous.
21 Además, como las parteras temían a Dios, él les concedió su propia familia.

And because the midwives feared God, he gave them families of their own.
22 Entonces el faraón dio la siguiente orden a todo su pueblo: «Tiren al río Nilo a todo niño hebreo recién nacido; pero a las niñas pueden dejarlas con vida».

Then Pharaoh gave this order to all his people: “Every Hebrew boy that is born you must throw into the Nile, but let every girl live.”
