1 Jetro visita a Moisés<br />Jetro, el suegro de Moisés y sacerdote de Madián, se enteró de todo lo que Dios había hecho por Moisés y por su pueblo, los israelitas; y oyó particularmente cómo el Señor<br /> los había sacado de Egipto.

Now Jethro, the priest of Midian and father-in-law of Moses, heard of everything God had done for Moses and for his people Israel, and how the LORD had brought Israel out of Egypt.
2 Anteriormente, Moisés había enviado a su esposa Séfora y a sus dos hijos de regreso a casa de Jetro, y él los había hospedado.

After Moses had sent away his wife Zipporah, his father-in-law Jethro received her
3 (El primer hijo de Moisés se llamaba Gersón, porque cuando el niño nació, Moisés dijo: «He sido un extranjero en tierra extraña».

and her two sons. One son was named Gershom, for Moses said, “I have become a foreigner in a foreign land”;
4 A su segundo hijo lo llamó Eliezer, porque dijo: «El Dios de mis antepasados me ayudó y me rescató de la espada del faraón»).

and the other was named Eliezer, for he said, “My father’s God was my helper; he saved me from the sword of Pharaoh.”
5 Así que Jetro, el suegro de Moisés, fue a visitarlo al desierto y llevó consigo a la esposa y a los dos hijos de Moisés. Llegaron cuando Moisés y el pueblo acampaban cerca del monte de Dios.

Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, together with Moses’ sons and wife, came to him in the wilderness, where he was camped near the mountain of God.
6 Jetro le había enviado un mensaje a Moisés para avisarle: «Yo, tu suegro, Jetro, vengo a verte, junto con tu esposa y tus dos hijos».

Jethro had sent word to him, “I, your father-in-law Jethro, am coming to you with your wife and her two sons.”
7 Entonces Moisés salió a recibir a su suegro. Se inclinó ante él y le dio un beso. Luego de preguntarse el uno al otro cómo les iba, entraron en la carpa de Moisés.

So Moses went out to meet his father-in-law and bowed down and kissed him. They greeted each other and then went into the tent.
8 Moisés le contó a su suegro todo lo que el Señor<br /> les había hecho al faraón y a los egipcios a favor de Israel. También le habló de todas las privaciones que habían sufrido a lo largo del camino y de cómo el Señor<br /> había librado a su pueblo de las dificultades.

Moses told his father-in-law about everything the LORD had done to Pharaoh and the Egyptians for Israel’s sake and about all the hardships they had met along the way and how the LORD had saved them.
9 Jetro se alegró mucho al oír de todo el bien que el Señor<br /> había hecho por Israel al rescatarlo de las manos de los egipcios.

Jethro was delighted to hear about all the good things the LORD had done for Israel in rescuing them from the hand of the Egyptians.
10 «¡Alabado sea el Señor<br />! —exclamó Jetro—. Pues los rescató de los egipcios y del faraón. ¡Así es, rescató a Israel del poder de Egipto!

He said, “Praise be to the LORD, who rescued you from the hand of the Egyptians and of Pharaoh, and who rescued the people from the hand of the Egyptians.
11 Ahora sé que el Señor<br /> es más grande que todos los demás dioses, porque rescató a su pueblo de la opresión de los egipcios arrogantes».

Now I know that the LORD is greater than all other gods, for he did this to those who had treated Israel arrogantly.”
12 Luego Jetro, el suegro de Moisés, presentó una ofrenda quemada y sacrificios ante Dios. Aarón y todos los ancianos de Israel lo acompañaron a comer lo que fue ofrecido en sacrificio en presencia de Dios.

Then Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, brought a burnt offering and other sacrifices to God, and Aaron came with all the elders of Israel to eat a meal with Moses’ father-in-law in the presence of God.
13 Consejo sabio de Jetro<br />Al día siguiente, Moisés se sentó para oír los pleitos que los israelitas tenían unos con otros. Y el pueblo esperó a ser atendido delante de Moisés desde la mañana hasta la tarde.

The next day Moses took his seat to serve as judge for the people, and they stood around him from morning till evening.
14 Cuando el suegro de Moisés vio todo lo que él hacía por el pueblo, le preguntó:<br />—¿Qué logras en realidad sentado aquí? ¿Por qué te esfuerzas en hacer todo el trabajo tú solo, mientras que el pueblo está de pie a tu alrededor desde la mañana hasta la tarde?

When his father-in-law saw all that Moses was doing for the people, he said, “What is this you are doing for the people? Why do you alone sit as judge, while all these people stand around you from morning till evening?”
15 Moisés contestó:<br />—Porque el pueblo acude a mí en busca de resoluciones de parte de Dios.

Moses answered him, “Because the people come to me to seek God’s will.
16 Cuando les surge un desacuerdo, ellos acuden a mí, y yo soy quien resuelve los casos entre los que están en conflicto. Mantengo al pueblo informado de los decretos de Dios y les transmito sus instrucciones.

Whenever they have a dispute, it is brought to me, and I decide between the parties and inform them of God’s decrees and instructions.”
17 —¡No está bien lo que haces! —exclamó el suegro de Moisés—.

Moses’ father-in-law replied, “What you are doing is not good.
18 Así acabarás agotado y también se agotará el pueblo. Esta tarea es una carga demasiado pesada para una sola persona.

You and these people who come to you will only wear yourselves out. The work is too heavy for you; you cannot handle it alone.
19 Ahora escúchame y déjame darte un consejo, y que Dios esté contigo. Tú debes seguir siendo el representante del pueblo ante Dios, presentándole los conflictos.

Listen now to me and I will give you some advice, and may God be with you. You must be the people’s representative before God and bring their disputes to him.
20 Enséñales los decretos de Dios; transmíteles sus instrucciones; muéstrales cómo comportarse en la vida.

Teach them his decrees and instructions, and show them the way they are to live and how they are to behave.
21 Sin embargo, elige, de entre todo el pueblo, a algunos hombres con capacidad y honestidad, temerosos de Dios y que odien el soborno. Nómbralos jefes de grupos de mil, de cien, de cincuenta y de diez personas.

But select capable men from all the people—men who fear God, trustworthy men who hate dishonest gain—and appoint them as officials over thousands, hundreds, fifties and tens.
22 Ellos tendrán que estar siempre disponibles para resolver los conflictos sencillos que surgen entre el pueblo, pero los casos más graves te los traerán a ti. Deja que los jefes juzguen los asuntos de menor importancia. Ellos te ayudarán a llevar la carga, para que la tarea te resulte más fácil.

Have them serve as judges for the people at all times, but have them bring every difficult case to you; the simple cases they can decide themselves. That will make your load lighter, because they will share it with you.
23 Si sigues este consejo, y si Dios así te lo ordena, serás capaz de soportar las presiones, y la gente regresará a su casa en paz.

If you do this and God so commands, you will be able to stand the strain, and all these people will go home satisfied.”
24 Moisés escuchó el consejo de su suegro y siguió sus recomendaciones.

Moses listened to his father-in-law and did everything he said.
25 Eligió hombres capaces de entre todo Israel y los nombró jefes del pueblo. Los puso a cargo de grupos de mil, de cien, de cincuenta y de diez personas.

He chose capable men from all Israel and made them leaders of the people, officials over thousands, hundreds, fifties and tens.
26 Estos hombres estaban siempre disponibles para resolver los conflictos sencillos de la gente. Los casos más graves los remitían a Moisés, pero ellos mismos se encargaban de los asuntos de menor importancia.

They served as judges for the people at all times. The difficult cases they brought to Moses, but the simple ones they decided themselves.
27 Poco tiempo después, Moisés se despidió de su suegro, quien regresó a su propia tierra.

Then Moses sent his father-in-law on his way, and Jethro returned to his own country.
