1 Hiram king of Tzor sent messengers to David, and cedar trees, and masons, and carpenters, to build him a house.
1 Now Hiram king of Tyre sent messengers to David, along with cedar logs, stonemasons and carpenters to build a palace for him.
2 David perceived that the LORD had established him king over Yisra'el; for his kingdom was exalted on high, for his people Yisra'el's sake.
2 And David knew that the LORD had established him as king over Israel and that his kingdom had been highly exalted for the sake of his people Israel.
3 David took more wives at Yerushalayim; and David became the father of more sons and daughters.
3 In Jerusalem David took more wives and became the father of more sons and daughters.
4 These are the names of the children whom he had in Yerushalayim: Shammua, and Shovav, Natan, and Shlomo,
4 These are the names of the children born to him there: Shammua, Shobab, Nathan, Solomon,
5 and Yivchar, and Elishua, and Elpelet,
5 Ibhar, Elishua, Elpelet,
6 and Nogah, and Nefeg, and Yafia,
6 Nogah, Nepheg, Japhia,
7 and Elishama, and Be`elyada, and Elifelet.
7 Elishama, Beeliada and Eliphelet.
8 When the Pelishtim heard that David was anointed king over all Yisra'el, all the Pelishtim went up to seek David: and David heard of it, and went out against them.
8 When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed king over all Israel, they went up in full force to search for him, but David heard about it and went out to meet them.
9 Now the Pelishtim had come and made a raid in the valley of Refa'im.
9 Now the Philistines had come and raided the Valley of Rephaim;
10 David inquired of God, saying, Shall I go up against the Pelishtim? and will you deliver them into my hand? the LORD said to him, Go up; for I will deliver them into your hand.
10 so David inquired of God: “Shall I go and attack the Philistines? Will you deliver them into my hands?” The LORD answered him, “Go, I will deliver them into your hands.”
11 So they came up to Ba`al-Peratzim, and David struck them there; and David said, God has broken my enemies by my hand, like the breach of waters. Therefore they called the name of that place Ba`al-Peratzim.
11 So David and his men went up to Baal Perazim, and there he defeated them. He said, “As waters break out, God has broken out against my enemies by my hand.” So that place was called Baal Perazim.
12 They left their gods there; and David gave mitzvah, and they were burned with fire.
12 The Philistines had abandoned their gods there, and David gave orders to burn them in the fire.
13 The Pelishtim yet again made a raid in the valley.
13 Once more the Philistines raided the valley;
14 David inquired again of God; and God said to him, You shall not go up after them: turn away from them, and come on them over against the mulberry trees.
14 so David inquired of God again, and God answered him, “Do not go directly after them, but circle around them and attack them in front of the poplar trees.
15 It shall be, when you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the mulberry trees, that then you shall go out to battle; for God is gone out before you to strike the host of the Pelishtim.
15 As soon as you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the poplar trees, move out to battle, because that will mean God has gone out in front of you to strike the Philistine army.”
16 David did as God commanded him: and they struck the host of the Pelishtim from Giv`on even to Gezer.
16 So David did as God commanded him, and they struck down the Philistine army, all the way from Gibeon to Gezer.
17 The fame of David went out into all lands; and the LORD brought the fear of him on all nations.
17 So David’s fame spread throughout every land, and the LORD made all the nations fear him.
