The Darby Translation DBY
New Century Version NCV
1 Dare any one of you, having a matter against another, prosecute his suit before the unjust, and not before the saints?
1
When you have something against another Christian, how can you bring yourself to go before judges who are not right with God? Why do you not let God's people decide who is right?
2 Do ye not then know that the saints shall judge the world? and if the world is judged by you, are ye unworthy of [the] smallest judgments?
2
Surely you know that God's people will judge the world. So if you are to judge the world, are you not able to judge small cases as well?
3 Do ye not know that we shall judge angels? and not then matters of this life?
3
You know that in the future we will judge angels, so surely we can judge the ordinary things of this life.
4 If then ye have judgments as to things of this life, set those [to judge] who are little esteemed in the assembly.
4
If you have ordinary cases that must be judged, are you going to appoint people as judges who mean nothing to the church?
5 I speak to you [to put you] to shame. Thus there is not a wise person among you, not even one, who shall be able to decide between his brethren!
5
I say this to shame you. Surely there is someone among you wise enough to judge a complaint between believers.
6 But brother prosecutes his suit with brother, and that before unbelievers.
6
But now one believer goes to court against another believer -- and you do this in front of unbelievers!
7 Already indeed then it is altogether a fault in you that ye have suits between yourselves. Why do ye not rather suffer wrong? why are ye not rather defrauded?
7
The fact that you have lawsuits against each other shows that you are already defeated. Why not let yourselves be wronged? Why not let yourselves be cheated?
8 But *ye* do wrong, and defraud, and this [your] brethren.
8
But you yourselves do wrong and cheat, and you do this to other believers!
9 Do ye not know that unrighteous [persons] shall not inherit [the] kingdom of God? Do not err: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor those who make women of themselves, nor who abuse themselves with men,
9
10 nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor abusive persons, nor [the] rapacious, shall inherit [the] kingdom of God.
10
Surely you know that the people who do wrong will not inherit God's kingdom. Do not be fooled. Those who sin sexually, worship idols, take part in adultery, those who are male prostitutes, or men who have sexual relations with other men, those who steal, are greedy, get drunk, lie about others, or rob -- these people will not inherit God's kingdom.
11 And these things were some of you; but ye have been washed, but ye have been sanctified, but ye have been justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.
11
In the past, some of you were like that, but you were washed clean. You were made holy, and you were made right with God in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God.
12 All things are lawful to me, but all things do not profit; all things are lawful to me, but *I* will not be brought under the power of any.
12
"I am allowed to do all things," but all things are not good for me to do. "I am allowed to do all things," but I will not let anything make me its slave.
13 Meats for the belly, and the belly for meats; but God will bring to nothing both it and them: but the body [is] not for fornication, but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body.
13
"Food is for the stomach, and the stomach for food," but God will destroy them both. The body is not for sexual sin but for the Lord, and the Lord is for the body.
14 And God has both raised up the Lord, and will raise us up from among [the dead] by his power.
14
By his power God has raised the Lord from the dead and will also raise us from the dead.
15 Do ye not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I then, taking the members of the Christ, make [them] members of a harlot? Far be the thought.
15
Surely you know that your bodies are parts of Christ himself. So I must never take the parts of Christ and join them to a prostitute!
16 Do ye not know that he [that is] joined to the harlot is one body? for the two, he says, shall be one flesh.
16
It is written in the Scriptures, "The two will become one body." So you should know that anyone who joins with a prostitute becomes one body with the prostitute.
17 But he that [is] joined to the Lord is one Spirit.
17
But the one who joins with the Lord is one spirit with the Lord.
18 Flee fornication. Every sin which a man may practise is without the body, but he that commits fornication sins against his own body.
18
So run away from sexual sin. Every other sin people do is outside their bodies, but those who sin sexually sin against their own bodies.
19 Do ye not know that your body is [the] temple of the Holy Spirit which [is] in you, which ye have of God; and ye are not your own?
19
You should know that your body is a temple for the Holy Spirit who is in you. You have received the Holy Spirit from God. So you do not belong to yourselves,
20 for ye have been bought with a price: glorify now then God in your body.
20
because you were bought by God for a price. So honor God with your bodies.
