1 Y se levantó Satanás contra Israel e incitó a David a hacer un censo de Israel.

2 Dijo, pues, David a Joab y a los jefes del pueblo: Id, contad a Israel desde Beerseba hasta Dan, y traedme el resultado para que yo sepa el número de ellos.

3 Pero Joab dijo: Añada el SEÑOR a su pueblo cien veces más de lo que son. Mas, oh rey, señor mío, ¿no son todos ellos siervos de mi señor? ¿Por qué procura esto mi señor? ¿Por qué ha de ser él motivo de culpa para Israel?

4 Sin embargo, la palabra del rey prevaleció contra Joab. Salió, pues, Joab y recorrió todo Israel, y volvió a Jerusalén.

5 Y Joab dio a David el total del censo de todo el pueblo. Y en todo Israel había un millón cien mil hombres que sacaban espada; y en Judá había cuatrocientos setenta mil hombres que sacaban espada.

6 Pero entre ellos no hizo un censo de Leví ni de Benjamín, porque la orden del rey era detestable para Joab.

7 También el censo desagradó a Dios, e hirió a Israel.

8 Entonces dijo David a Dios: He pecado gravemente al hacer esto. Pero ahora te ruego que quites la iniquidad de tu siervo, porque he obrado muy neciamente.

9 Y el SEÑOR habló a Gad, vidente de David, diciendo:

10 Ve y habla a David, y dile: "Así dice el SEÑOR: 'Te propongo tres cosas; escoge para ti una de ellas, para que yo te la haga.'"

11 Entonces vino Gad a David y le dijo: Así dice el SEÑOR: "Escoge para ti:

12 tres años de hambre, o tres meses de derrota delante de tus adversarios mientras te alcanza la espada de tus enemigos, o tres días de la espada del SEÑOR, esto es, la pestilencia en la tierra y el ángel del SEÑOR haciendo estragos por todo el territorio de Israel." Ahora pues, considera qué respuesta he de llevar al que me envió.

13 Respondió David a Gad: Estoy muy angustiado. Te ruego que me dejes caer en manos del SEÑOR, porque muy grandes son sus misericordias; pero no caiga yo en manos de hombre.

14 Y el SEÑOR envió pestilencia sobre Israel, y cayeron setenta mil hombres de Israel.

15 Y envió Dios un ángel a Jerusalén para destruirla; pero cuando estaba a punto de destruirla, miró el SEÑOR y sintió pesar por la calamidad, y dijo al ángel destructor: Basta, detén ahora tu mano. Y el ángel del SEÑOR estaba junto a la era de Ornán jebuseo.

16 Y alzando David sus ojos, vio al ángel del SEÑOR que estaba entre la tierra y el cielo, con una espada desenvainada en su mano, extendida sobre Jerusalén. Entonces David y los ancianos, vestidos de cilicio, cayeron sobre sus rostros.

17 Y David dijo a Dios: ¿No soy yo el que ordenó enumerar al pueblo? Ciertamente yo soy el que ha pecado y obrado muy perversamente, pero estas ovejas, ¿qué han hecho? Oh SEÑOR, Dios mío, te ruego que tu mano sea contra mí y contra la casa de mi padre, pero no contra tu pueblo, para que no haya plaga entre ellos.

18 Luego el ángel del SEÑOR ordenó a Gad que dijera a David que subiera y edificara un altar al SEÑOR en la era de Ornán jebuseo.

19 David subió según la palabra que Gad había hablado en nombre del SEÑOR.

20 Y volviéndose Ornán, vio al ángel, y sus cuatro hijos que estaban con él se escondieron. Y Ornán estaba trillando trigo.

21 Y cuando David llegó junto a Ornán, éste miró, y al ver a David, salió de la era y se postró ante David rostro en tierra.

22 Entonces David dijo a Ornán: Dame el lugar de esta era, para que edifique en él un altar al SEÑOR; me lo darás por su justo precio, para que se retire la plaga del pueblo.

23 Y Ornán dijo a David: Tómalo para ti, y que mi señor el rey haga lo que sea bueno ante sus ojos. Mira, daré los bueyes para holocaustos y los trillos para leña y el trigo para la ofrenda de cereal; lo daré todo.

24 Pero el rey David dijo a Ornán: No, sino que ciertamente lo compraré por su justo precio; porque no tomaré para el SEÑOR lo que es tuyo, ni ofreceré un holocausto que no me cueste nada.

25 Y David dio a Ornán el peso de seiscientos siclos de oro por el lugar.

26 Entonces David edificó allí un altar al SEÑOR, y ofreció holocaustos y ofrendas de paz. E invocó al SEÑOR, y El le respondió con fuego del cielo sobre el altar del holocausto.

27 Y el SEÑOR ordenó al ángel, y éste volvió su espada a la vaina.

28 En aquel tiempo, viendo David que el SEÑOR le había respondido en la era de Ornán jebuseo, ofreció sacrificio allí;

29 porque el tabernáculo del SEÑOR que Moisés había hecho en el desierto y el altar del holocausto estaban en aquel tiempo en el lugar alto en Gabaón.

30 Pero David no pudo ir allá, delante de él, para consultar a Dios, porque estaba aterrado a causa de la espada del ángel del SEÑOR.

1 Now Satan entered the scene and seduced David into taking a census of Israel.

2 David gave orders to Joab and the army officers under him, "Canvass all the tribes of Israel, from Dan to Beersheba, and get a count of the population. I want to know the number."

3 Joab resisted: "May God multiply his people by hundreds! Don't they all belong to my master the king? But why on earth would you do a thing like this - why risk getting Israel into trouble with God?"

4 But David wouldn't take no for an answer, so Joab went off and did it - canvassed the country and then came back to Jerusalem

5 and reported the results of the census: There were 1,100,000 fighting men; of that total, Judah accounted for 470,000.

6 Joab, disgusted by the command - it, in fact, turned his stomach! - protested by leaving Levi and Benjamin out of the census-taking.

7 And God, offended by the whole thing, punished Israel.

8 Then David prayed, "I have sinned badly in what I have just done, substituting statistics for trust; forgive my sin - I've been really stupid."

9 God answered by speaking to Gad, David's pastor:

10 "Go and give David this message: 'God's word: You have your choice of three punishments; choose one and I'll do the rest.'"

11 Gad delivered the message to David:

12 "Do you want three years of famine, three months of running from your enemies while they chase you down, or three days of the sword of God - an epidemic unleashed on the country by an angel of God? Think it over and make up your mind. What shall I tell the One who sent me?"

13 David told Gad, "They're all terrible! But I'd rather be punished by God whose mercy is great, than fall into human hands."

14 So God unleashed an epidemic in Israel - 70,000 Israelites died.

15 God then sent the angel to Jerusalem but when he saw the destruction about to begin, he compassionately changed his mind and ordered the death angel, "Enough's enough! Pull back!"

16 David looked up and saw the angel hovering between earth and sky, sword drawn and about to strike Jerusalem. David and the elders bowed in prayer and covered themselves with rough burlap.

17 David prayed, "Please! I'm the one who sinned; I'm the one at fault. But these sheep, what did they do wrong? Punish me, not them, me and my family; don't take it out on them."

18 The angel of God ordered Gad to tell David to go and build an altar to God on the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite.

19 David did what Gad told him in obedience to God's command.

20 Meanwhile Araunah had quit threshing the wheat and was watching the angel; his four sons took cover and hid.

21 David came up to Araunah. When Araunah saw David, he left the threshing floor and bowed deeply before David, honoring the king.

22 David said to Araunah, "Give me the site of the threshing floor so I can build an altar to God. Charge me the market price; we're going to put an end to this disaster."

23 "O master, my king," said Araunah, "just take it; do whatever you want with it! Look, here's an ox for the burnt offering and threshing paddles for the fuel and wheat for the meal offering - it's all yours!"

24 David replied to Araunah, "No. I'm buying it from you, and at the full market price. I'm not going to offer God sacrifices that are no sacrifice."

25 So David bought the place from Araunah for 600 shekels of gold.

26 He built an altar to God there and sacrificed Whole-Burnt-Offerings and Peace-Offerings. He called out to God and God answered by striking the altar of Whole-Burnt-Offering with lightning.

27 Then God told the angel to put his sword back into its scabbard.

28 And that's the story of what happened when David saw that God answered him on the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite at the time he offered the sacrifice.

29 At this time the Tabernacle that Moses had constructed in the desert, and with it the Altar of Burnt Offering, were set up at the worship center at Gibeon.

30 But David, terrified by the angel's sword, wouldn't go there to pray to God anymore.
