1 Mas Satanás se levantó contra Israel, e incitó a David a que contara a Israel

2 Y dijo David a Joab y a los príncipes del pueblo: Id, contad a Israel desde Beerseba hasta Dan, y traedme el número de ellos para que <em>yo</em> lo sepa

3 Y dijo Joab: Añada el SEÑOR a su pueblo cien veces otros tantos. Rey señor mío, ¿no son todos estos siervos de mi señor? ¿Para qué procura mi señor esto, para que sea por culpabilidad a Israel

4 Mas el mandamiento del rey pudo más que Joab. Salió, <em>por tanto</em>, Joab, y fue por todo Israel; y volvió a Jerusalén. Y Joab dio la cuenta del número del pueblo a David

5 Y se halló en todo Israel que sacaban espada, once veces cien mil; y de Judá cuatrocientos setenta mil hombres que sacaban espada

6 Entre éstos no fueron contados los levitas, ni los hijos de Benjamín, porque Joab abominaba el mandamiento del rey

7 Este mandamiento <em>también</em> desagradó a los ojos de Dios, e hirió a Israel

8 Y dijo David a Dios: He pecado gravemente en hacer esto; te ruego que hagas pasar la iniquidad de tu siervo, porque <em>yo</em> he hecho muy locamente

9 Y habló el SEÑOR a Gad, vidente de David, diciendo

10 Vé, y habla a David, y dile: Así dijo el SEÑOR: Tres cosas te propongo; escoge <em>de ellas</em> una que <em>yo</em> haga contigo

11 Y viniendo Gad a David, le dijo: Así dijo el SEÑOR

12 Escógete, o tres años de hambre; o que por tres meses <em>seas</em> consumido delante de tus enemigos, y que la espada de tus adversarios te alcance; o <em>por</em> tres días la espada del SEÑOR y pestilencia en la tierra, y que el ángel del SEÑOR destruya en todo el término de Israel; mira pues qué he de responder al que me ha enviado

13 Entonces David dijo a Gad: Estoy en gran angustia; ruego que <em>yo</em> caiga en la mano del SEÑOR; porque sus misericordias <em>son</em> muchas en extremo, y que no caiga <em>yo</em> en manos de hombres

14 Así el SEÑOR dio pestilencia en Israel, y cayeron de Israel setenta mil hombres

15 Y envió el SEÑOR el ángel a Jerusalén para destruirla; pero estando él destruyendo, miró el SEÑOR, y se arrepintió de aquel mal. Y dijo al ángel que destruía: Basta; detén tu mano. Y el ángel del SEÑOR estaba junto a la era de Ornán, el jebuseo

16 Y alzando David sus ojos, vio al ángel del SEÑOR, que estaba entre el cielo y la tierra, teniendo una espada desnuda en su mano extendida contra Jerusalén. Entonces David y los ancianos se postraron sobre sus rostros, cubiertos de cilicio

17 Y dijo David a Dios: ¿No soy yo el que hizo contar al pueblo? Yo mismo soy el que pequé, y ciertamente he hecho mal; mas estas ovejas, ¿qué han hecho? SEÑOR Dios mío, sea ahora tu mano contra mí, y contra la casa de mi padre, y no haya plaga en tu pueblo

18 Y dijo el ángel del SEÑOR a Gad que dijera a David, que subiera y compusiera un altar al SEÑOR en la era de Ornán, el jebuseo

19 Entonces David subió, conforme a la palabra de Gad que le había dicho en nombre del SEÑOR

20 Y volviéndose Ornán vio al ángel; y estaban con él cuatro hijos suyos, los cuales se escondieron. Y Ornán trillaba el trigo

21 Y viniendo David a Ornán, miró Ornán y vio a David; y saliendo de la era, se postró en tierra ante David

22 Y dijo David a Ornán: Dame este lugar de la era, en que edifique un altar al SEÑOR, y dámelo por su cabal precio, para que cese la plaga del pueblo

23 Y Ornán respondió a David: Tómalo para ti, y haga mi señor el rey lo que bien le pareciere; y aun los bueyes daré para el holocausto, y los trillos para leña, y trigo para el presente; <em>yo</em> lo doy todo

24 Entonces el rey David dijo a Ornán: No, sino que efectivamente la compraré por su justo precio; porque no tomaré para el SEÑOR lo que es tuyo, ni sacrificaré holocausto sin costo

25 Y dio David a Ornán por el lugar seiscientos siclos de oro por peso

26 Y edificó allí David un altar al SEÑOR, en el cual sacrificó holocaustos y <em>sacrificios</em> pacíficos, e invocó al SEÑOR, el cual le respondió por fuego desde los cielos en el altar del holocausto

27 Y cuando el SEÑOR habló al ángel, <em>él</em> volvió su espada a la vaina

28 Entonces viendo David que el SEÑOR le había oído en la era de Ornán, el jebuseo, sacrificó allí

29 Y el tabernáculo del SEÑOR que Moisés había hecho en el desierto, y el altar del holocausto, estaban entonces en el lugar alto de Gabaón

30 mas David no pudo ir allá a consultar a Dios, porque estaba espantado a causa de la espada del ángel del SEÑOR

1 Satan rose up against Israel and incited David to take a census of Israel.

2 So David said to Joab and the commanders of the troops, “Go and count the Israelites from Beersheba to Dan. Then report back to me so that I may know how many there are.”

3 But Joab replied, “May the LORD multiply his troops a hundred times over. My lord the king, are they not all my lord’s subjects? Why does my lord want to do this? Why should he bring guilt on Israel?”

4 The king’s word, however, overruled Joab; so Joab left and went throughout Israel and then came back to Jerusalem.

5 Joab reported the number of the fighting men to David: In all Israel there were one million one hundred thousand men who could handle a sword, including four hundred and seventy thousand in Judah.

6 But Joab did not include Levi and Benjamin in the numbering, because the king’s command was repulsive to him.

7 This command was also evil in the sight of God; so he punished Israel.

8 Then David said to God, “I have sinned greatly by doing this. Now, I beg you, take away the guilt of your servant. I have done a very foolish thing.”

9 The LORD said to Gad, David’s seer,

10 “Go and tell David, ‘This is what the LORD says: I am giving you three options. Choose one of them for me to carry out against you.’ ”

11 So Gad went to David and said to him, “This is what the LORD says: ‘Take your choice:

12 three years of famine, three months of being swept away before your enemies, with their swords overtaking you, or three days of the sword of the LORD—days of plague in the land, with the angel of the LORD ravaging every part of Israel.’ Now then, decide how I should answer the one who sent me.”

13 David said to Gad, “I am in deep distress. Let me fall into the hands of the LORD, for his mercy is very great; but do not let me fall into human hands.”

14 So the LORD sent a plague on Israel, and seventy thousand men of Israel fell dead.

15 And God sent an angel to destroy Jerusalem. But as the angel was doing so, the LORD saw it and relented concerning the disaster and said to the angel who was destroying the people, “Enough! Withdraw your hand.” The angel of the LORD was then standing at the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite.

16 David looked up and saw the angel of the LORD standing between heaven and earth, with a drawn sword in his hand extended over Jerusalem. Then David and the elders, clothed in sackcloth, fell facedown.

17 David said to God, “Was it not I who ordered the fighting men to be counted? I, the shepherd, have sinned and done wrong. These are but sheep. What have they done? LORD my God, let your hand fall on me and my family, but do not let this plague remain on your people.”

18 Then the angel of the LORD ordered Gad to tell David to go up and build an altar to the LORD on the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite.

19 So David went up in obedience to the word that Gad had spoken in the name of the LORD.

20 While Araunah was threshing wheat, he turned and saw the angel; his four sons who were with him hid themselves.

21 Then David approached, and when Araunah looked and saw him, he left the threshing floor and bowed down before David with his face to the ground.

22 David said to him, “Let me have the site of your threshing floor so I can build an altar to the LORD, that the plague on the people may be stopped. Sell it to me at the full price.”

23 Araunah said to David, “Take it! Let my lord the king do whatever pleases him. Look, I will give the oxen for the burnt offerings, the threshing sledges for the wood, and the wheat for the grain offering. I will give all this.”

24 But King David replied to Araunah, “No, I insist on paying the full price. I will not take for the LORD what is yours, or sacrifice a burnt offering that costs me nothing.”

25 So David paid Araunah six hundred shekels of gold for the site.

26 David built an altar to the LORD there and sacrificed burnt offerings and fellowship offerings. He called on the LORD, and the LORD answered him with fire from heaven on the altar of burnt offering.

27 Then the LORD spoke to the angel, and he put his sword back into its sheath.

28 At that time, when David saw that the LORD had answered him on the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite, he offered sacrifices there.

29 The tabernacle of the LORD, which Moses had made in the wilderness, and the altar of burnt offering were at that time on the high place at Gibeon.

30 But David could not go before it to inquire of God, because he was afraid of the sword of the angel of the LORD.
