1 Cuando David era ya viejo y colmado de días, puso a su hijo Salomón como rey sobre Israel.

When David got to be an old man, he made his son Solomon king over Israel.
2 Y reunió a todos los principales de Israel con los sacerdotes y los levitas.

At the same time he brought together all the leaders of Israel, the priests, and the Levites.
3 Los levitas fueron contados de treinta años para arriba, y su número, según el censo de los hombres, fue de treinta y ocho mil.

The Levites thirty years and older were counted; the total was 38,000.
4 De éstos, veinticuatro mil debían dirigir la obra de la casa del SEÑOR, seis mil eran oficiales y jueces

David sorted them into work groups: "24,000 are in charge of administering worship in the sanctuary; 6,000 are officials and judges
5 cuatro mil eran porteros y cuatro mil alababan al SEÑOR con los instrumentos que David había hecho para rendir alabanza.

4,000 are security guards; and 4,000 are to serve in the orchestra, praising God with instruments that I have provided for praise."
6 Y David los dividió en clases conforme a los hijos de Leví: Gersón, Coat y Merari.

David then divided the Levites into groupings named after the sons of Levi: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari.
7 De los de Gersón fueron Laadán y Simei.

The Gershonites: Ladan and Shimei.
8 Los hijos de Laadán fueron Jehiel el primero, Zetam y Joel: tres.

The three sons of Ladan: Jehiel, Zetham, and Joel.
9 Los hijos de Simei fueron Selomit, Haziel y Harán: tres. Estos fueron los jefes de las casas paternas de Laadán.

The three sons of Shimei: Shelomoth, Haziel, and Haran, all heads of the families of Ladan.

Jahath came first, followed by Ziza. Jeush and Beriah did not have many sons so they were counted as one family with one task.

The four sons of Kohath: Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel.
13 Los hijos de Amram fueron Aarón y Moisés. Y Aarón fue separado para ser santificado como el más santo, él y sus hijos para siempre, para quemar incienso delante del SEÑOR, para servirle y para bendecir en su nombre para siempre.

The sons of Amram: Aaron and Moses. Aaron was especially ordained to work in the Holy of Holies, to burn incense before God, to serve God and bless his Name always. This was a permanent appointment for Aaron and his sons.
14 Mas en cuanto a Moisés el hombre de Dios, sus hijos fueron contados entre la tribu de Leví

Moses and his sons were counted in the tribe of Levi
15 Los hijos de Moisés fueron Gersón y Eliezer.

The sons of Moses: Gershom and Eliezer.
16 El hijo de Gersón fue Sebuel el jefe.

Shubael was the first son of Gershom.
17 Y el hijo de Eliezer fue Rehabías el jefe; y Eliezer no tuvo más hijos, pero los hijos de Rehabías fueron muchos.

Rehabiah was the first and only son of Eliezer; but though Eliezer had no other sons, Rehabiah had many sons.

Eleazar died without any sons, only daughters. Their cousins, the sons of Kish, married the daughters.

These are the sons of Levi twenty years and older, divided up according to families and heads of families and listed in the work groups that took care of the worship in the sanctuary of God.
25 Porque dijo David: El SEÑOR, Dios de Israel, ha dado reposo a su pueblo, y El habita en Jerusalén para siempre.

David said, "Now that the God of Israel has given rest to his people and made Jerusalem his permanent home,
26 Y además los levitas ya no tendrán que llevar el tabernáculo y todos los utensilios para su servicio.

the Levites no longer have to carry the Tabernacle and all the furniture required for the work of worship."
27 Pues de acuerdo con las últimas palabras de David, los hijos de Leví fueron contados de veinte años para arriba;

These last words of David referred only to Levites twenty years old and above.
28 porque su oficio era ayudar a los hijos de Aarón en el servicio de la casa del SEÑOR, en los atrios y en las cámaras y en la purificación de todas las cosas sagradas y en la obra del servicio de la casa de Dios;

From now on the assigned work of the Levites was to assist Aaron's sons in the work of worship in God's house: maintain courtyards and closets, keep the furniture and utensils of worship clean, take care of any extra work needed in the work of worship,
29 y también con los panes de la proposición, la flor de harina para la ofrenda de cereal, los hojaldres sin levadura, lo preparado en sartén, lo bien mezclado y todas las medidas de capacidad y longitud.

and provide bread for the table and flour for the Meal Offerings and the unraised wafers - all baking and mixing, all measuring and weighing.
30 Y han de estar presentes cada mañana para dar gracias y para alabar al SEÑOR, y asimismo por la noche,

Also they were to be present for morning prayers, thanking and praising God, for evening prayers,
31 y para ofrecer todos los holocaustos al SEÑOR todos los días de reposo, las lunas nuevas y las fiestas señaladas según el número fijado por la ordenanza que las prescribe, continuamente delante del SEÑOR.

and at the service of Whole-Burnt-Offerings to God on Sabbath, at New Moons, and at all festivals. They were on regular duty to serve God according to their assignment and the required number.
32 Así estarán encargados de la custodia de la tienda de reunión, de la custodia del lugar santo y de la custodia de los hijos de Aarón sus parientes, para el servicio de la casa del SEÑOR.

In short, the Levites, with the sons of Aaron as their companions in the ministry of holy worship, were responsible for everything that had to do with worship: the place and times and ordering of worship.
