1 E MOLTO tempo appresso, la parola del Signore fu indirizzata ad Elia, nell’anno terzo, dicendo: Va’, mostrati ad Achab, ed io manderò della pioggia sopra il paese.

2 Elia dunque andò per mostrarsi ad Achab.

3 Or la fame era grave in Samaria. Ed Achab chiamò Abdia, ch’era suo mastro di casa or Abdia temeva grandemente il Signore;

4 e quando Izebel distruggeva i profeti del Signore, Abdia prese cento profeti, e li nascose, cinquanta in una spelonca, e cinquanta in un’altra, e li nudrì di pane e d’acqua;

5 ed Achab disse ad Abdia: Va’ per lo paese, a tutte le fonti dell’acque, ed a tutti i torrenti; forse troveremo dell’erba, e conserveremo in vita i cavalli ed i muli; e non lasceremo che il paese divenga deserto di bestie.

6 Spartirono adunque fra loro il paese, per andare attorno per esso; Achab andò per un cammino da parte, e Abdia per un altro cammino da parte.

7 E mentre Abdia era per cammino, ecco, Elia gli venne incontro. E Abdia, riconosciutolo, si gittò in terra sopra la sua faccia, e disse: Sei tu desso, Elia, mio signore?

8 Ed egli gli rispose: Sì, sono. Va’, di’ al tuo signore: Ecco Elia.

9 Ma egli disse: Qual peccato ho io commesso, che tu voglia dare il tuo servitore nelle mani di Achab, per farmi morire?

10 Come il Signore Iddio tuo vive, non v’è nazione, nè regno, dove il mio signore non abbia mandato a cercarti; ma è stato detto che tu non v’eri; anzi ha scongiurato il regno e la nazione, per sapere se niuno ti avea trovato.

11 E ora tu dici: Va’, di’ al tuo signore: Ecco Elia.

12 Ed avverrà che, quando io sarò partito d’appresso a te, lo Spirito del Signore ti trasporterà in qualche luogo che io non saprò, e quando io sarò venuto ad Achab, per rapportargli questo, egli, non trovandoti, mi ucciderà; e pure il tuo servitore teme il Signore dalla sua giovanezza.

13 Non è egli stato dichiarato al mio signore ciò che io feci, quando Izebel uccideva i profeti del Signore? come io ne nascosi cento, cinquanta in una spelonca, e cinquanta in un’altra, e li nudrii di pane e d’acqua?

14 E ora tu dici: Va’, di’ al tuo signore: Ecco Elia; onde egli mi ucciderà.

15 Ma Elia disse: Come il Signore degli eserciti, al quale io ministro, vive, oggi io mi mostrerò ad Achab.

16 Abdia adunque andò ad incontrare Achab, e gli rapportò la cosa. Ed Achab andò ad incontrare Elia.

17 E come Achab ebbe veduto Elia, gli disse: Sei tu qui, tu, che conturbi Israele?

18 Ma egli disse: Io non ho conturbato Israele; anzi tu, e la casa di tuo padre, l’avete conturbato, avendo voi lasciati i comandamenti del Signore, ed essendo tu andato dietro a’ Baali.

19 Ma ora, manda a far adunare appresso di me, in sul monte Carmel, tutto Israele, insieme co’ quattrocencinquanta profeti di Baal, e i quattrocento profeti del bosco, che mangiano alla tavola d’Izebel.

20 E Achab mandò a tutti i figliuoli d’Israele, e adunò que’ profeti in sul monte Carmel.

21 Allora Elia si accostò a tutto il popolo, e disse: Infino a quando zoppicherete de’ due lati? Se il Signore è Dio, seguitatelo; se altresì Baal è Dio, seguitate lui. Ma il popolo non gli rispose nulla.

22 Ed Elia disse al popolo: Io son restato solo profeta del Signore, ed i profeti di Baal sono quattrocencinquanta uomini.

23 Or sienci dati due giovenchi, ed eleggansene essi uno, e taglinlo a pezzi, e ponganlo sopra delle legne, senza mettervi fuoco; io altresì appresterò l’altro giovenco, e lo porrò sopra delle legne, e non vi metterò fuoco.

24 Poi invocate il nome de’ vostri dii; ed io invocherò il Nome del Signore. E quel dio che risponderà per fuoco, sia Iddio. E tutto il popolo rispose, e disse: Ben dici.

25 Ed Elia disse a’ profeti di Baal: Sceglietevi uno de’ giovenchi, e apprestatelo i primi; perciocchè voi siete in maggior numero; e invocate il nome de’ vostri dii, ma non vi mettete fuoco.

26 Essi adunque presero il giovenco ch’egli diede loro, e l’apprestarono; poi invocarono il nome di Baal, dalla mattina infino a mezzodì, dicendo: O Baal, rispondici. Ma non v’era nè voce, nè chi rispondesse; ed essi saltavano intorno all’altare che aveano fatto.

27 E in sul mezzodì Elia li beffava, e diceva: Gridate con gran voce, poichè egli è dio; perciocchè egli è in alcun ragionamento, o in procaccio di qualche cosa, o in viaggio; forse anche dorme, e si risveglierà.

28 Essi adunque gridavano con gran voce, e si facevano delle talgliature, secondo il lor costume, con coltelli, e con lancette, fino a spandersi il sangue addosso.

29 E quando il mezzodì fu passato, ed essi ebbero profetizzato fino all’ora che si offerisce l’offerta, non essendovi nè voce, nè chi rispondesse, nè chi attendesse a ciò che facevano,

30 Elia disse a tutto il popolo: Accostatevi a me. E tutto il popolo si accostò a lui. Ed egli racconciò l’altare del Signore ch’era stato disfatto.

31 Poi Elia prese dodici pietre, secondo il numero delle tribù dei figliuoli di Giacobbe, al quale il Signore avea detto: Il tuo nome sarà Israele.

32 E di quelle pietre edificò un altare al Nome del Signore, e fece d’intorno all’altare un condotto della capacità d’intorno a due staia di semenza.

33 Poi ordinò le legne, e tagliò il giovenco a pezzi, e lo mise sopra le legne.

34 E disse: empiete quattro vasi d’acqua, e spandetela sopra l’olocausto, e sopra le legne. Poi disse: Fatelo la seconda volta. Ed essi lo fecero la seconda volta. Poi disse: Fatelo la terza volta. Ed essi lo fecero la terza volta;

35 talchè l’acqua andava intorno all’altare, ed anche empiè il condotto.

36 E in su l’ora che si offerisce l’offerta, il profeta Elia si accostò, e disse: Signore Iddio d’Abrahamo, d’Isacco, e d’Israele, conoscasi oggi che tu sei Dio in Israele, e che io son tuo servitore, e che per la tua parola io ho fatte tutte queste cose.

37 Rispondimi, Signore, rispondimi; acciocchè questo popolo conosca che tu, Signore, sei l’Iddio, e che tu hai rivolto il cuor loro indietro.

38 Allora cadde fuoco del Signore, e consumò l’olocausto, e le legne, e le pietre, e la polvere, e lambì l’acqua che era nel condotto.

39 E tutto il popolo, avendo ciò veduto, cadde sopra la sua faccia, e disse: Il Signore è l’Iddio, il Signore è l’Iddio.

40 Ed Elia disse loro: Prendete i profeti di Baal, non iscampine alcuno. Ed essi li presero. Ed Elia li fece scendere al torrente Chison, e quivi li scannò.

41 Allora Elia disse ad Achab: Sali, mangia, e bevi; perciocchè, ecco il suon d’un romor di pioggia. Ed Achab salì per mangiare e per bere.

42 Ed Elia salì in su la sommità di Carmel; ed inchinatosi a terra, mise la faccia fra le ginocchia;

43 e disse al suo servitore: Deh! sali, e riguarda verso il mare. Ed egli salì, e riguardò, e disse: Ei non vi è nulla. Ed Elia disse: Ritornavi fino a sette volte.

44 Ed alla settima volta il servitore disse: Ecco, una piccola nuvola, come la palma della mano d’un uomo, sale dal mare. Ed Elia disse: Va’, di’ ad Achab: Metti i cavalli al carro, e scendi, chè la pioggia non ti arresti.

45 Ed a poco a poco il cielo si oscurò di nuvoli e di vento, e vi fu una gran pioggia. E Achab montò sopra il suo carro, e se ne andò in Izreel.

46 E la mano del Signore fu sopra Elia; ed egli si cinse i lombi, e corse davanti ad Achab, fino all’entrata d’Izreel.

1 After some time, in the third year of the drought, the Lord said to Elijah, "Go and present yourself to King Ahab, and I will send rain."

2 So Elijah started out. The famine in Samaria was at its worst,

3 so Ahab called in Obadiah, who was in charge of the palace. (Obadiah was a devout worshiper of the Lord,

4 and when Jezebel was killing the Lord's prophets, Obadiah took a hundred of them, hid them in caves in two groups of fifty, and provided them with food and water.)

5 Ahab said to Obadiah, "Let us go and look at every spring and every stream bed in the land to see if we can find enough grass to keep the horses and mules alive. Maybe we won't have to kill any of our animals."

6 They agreed on which part of the land each one would explore, and set off in different directions.

7 As Obadiah was on his way, he suddenly met Elijah. He recognized him, bowed low before him, and asked, "Is it really you, sir?"

8 "Yes, I'm Elijah," he answered. "Go and tell your master the king that I am here."

9 Obadiah answered, "What have I done that you want to put me in danger of being killed by King Ahab?

10 By the living Lord, your God, I swear that the king has made a search for you in every country in the world. Whenever the ruler of a country reported that you were not in his country, Ahab would require that ruler to swear that you could not be found.

11 And now you want me to go and tell him that you are here?

12 What if the spirit of the Lord carries you off to some unknown place as soon as I leave? Then, when I tell Ahab that you are here and he can't find you, he will put me to death. Remember that I have been a devout worshiper of the Lord ever since I was a boy.

13 Haven't you heard that when Jezebel was killing the prophets of the Lord I hid a hundred of them in caves, in two groups of fifty, and supplied them with food and water?

14 So how can you order me to go and tell the king that you are here? He will kill me!"

15 Elijah answered, "By the living Lord Almighty, whom I serve, I promise that I will present myself to the king today."

16 So Obadiah went to King Ahab and told him, and Ahab set off to meet Elijah.

17 When Ahab saw him, he said, "So there you are - the worst troublemaker in Israel!"

18 "I'm not the troublemaker," Elijah answered. "You are - you and your father. You are disobeying the Lord's commands and worshiping the idols of Baal.

19 Now order all the people of Israel to meet me at Mount Carmel. Bring along the 450 prophets of Baal and the 400 prophets of the goddess Asherah who are supported by Queen Jezebel."

20 So Ahab summoned all the Israelites and the prophets of Baal to meet at Mount Carmel.

21 Elijah went up to the people and said, "How much longer will it take you to make up your minds? If the Lord is God, worship him; but if Baal is God, worship him!" But the people didn't say a word.

22 Then Elijah said, "I am the only prophet of the Lord still left, but there are 450 prophets of Baal.

23 Bring two bulls; let the prophets of Baal take one, kill it, cut it in pieces, and put it on the wood - but don't light the fire. I will do the same with the other bull.

24 Then let the prophets of Baal pray to their god, and I will pray to the Lord, and the one who answers by sending fire - he is God." The people shouted their approval.

25 Then Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, "Since there are so many of you, you take a bull and prepare it first. Pray to your god, but don't set fire to the wood."

26 They took the bull that was brought to them, prepared it, and prayed to Baal until noon. They shouted, "Answer us, Baal!" and kept dancing around the altar they had built. But no answer came.

27 At noon Elijah started making fun of them: "Pray louder! He is a god! Maybe he is day-dreaming or relieving himself, or perhaps he's gone off on a trip! Or maybe he's sleeping, and you've got to wake him up!"

28 So the prophets prayed louder and cut themselves with knives and daggers, according to their ritual, until blood flowed.

29 They kept on ranting and raving until the middle of the afternoon; but no answer came, not a sound was heard.

30 Then Elijah said to the people, "Come closer to me," and they all gathered around him. He set about repairing the altar of the Lord which had been torn down.

31 He took twelve stones, one for each of the twelve tribes named for the sons of Jacob, the man to whom the Lord had given the name Israel.

32 With these stones he rebuilt the altar for the worship of the Lord. He dug a trench around it, large enough to hold about four gallons of water.

33 Then he placed the wood on the altar, cut the bull in pieces, and laid it on the wood. He said, "Fill four jars with water and pour it on the offering and the wood." They did so,

34 and he said, "Do it again" - and they did. "Do it once more," he said - and they did.

35 The water ran down around the altar and filled the trench.

36 At the hour of the afternoon sacrifice the prophet Elijah approached the altar and prayed, "O Lord, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, prove now that you are the God of Israel and that I am your servant and have done all this at your command.

37 Answer me, Lord, answer me, so that this people will know that you, the Lord, are God and that you are bringing them back to yourself."

38 The Lord sent fire down, and it burned up the sacrifice, the wood, and the stones, scorched the earth and dried up the water in the trench.

39 When the people saw this, they threw themselves on the ground and exclaimed, "The Lord is God; the Lord alone is God!"

40 Elijah ordered, "Seize the prophets of Baal; don't let any of them get away!" The people seized them all, and Elijah led them down to Kishon Brook and killed them.

41 Then Elijah said to King Ahab, "Now, go and eat. I hear the roar of rain approaching."

42 While Ahab went to eat, Elijah climbed to the top of Mount Carmel, where he bowed down to the ground, with his head between his knees.

43 He said to his servant, "Go and look toward the sea." The servant went and returned, saying, "I didn't see a thing." Seven times in all Elijah told him to go and look.

44 The seventh time he returned and said, "I saw a little cloud no bigger than a man's hand, coming up from the sea." Elijah ordered his servant, "Go to King Ahab and tell him to get in his chariot and go back home before the rain stops him."

45 In a little while the sky was covered with dark clouds, the wind began to blow, and a heavy rain began to fall. Ahab got in his chariot and started back to Jezreel.

46 The power of the Lord came on Elijah; he fastened his clothes tight around his waist and ran ahead of Ahab all the way to Jezreel.
