1 OR Ben-hadad, re di Siria, adunò tutto il suo esercito; ed avea seco trentadue re, e cavalli, e carri; poi salì, pose l’assedio a Samaria, e la combattè.

2 E mandò messi ad Achab, re d’Israele, nella città, a dirgli:

3 Così dice Ben-hadad: Il tuo argento ed il tuo oro è mio; mie sono ancora le tue mogli ed i tuoi bei figliuoli.

4 E il re d’Israele rispose, e disse: Egli è come tu dici, o re, mio signore; io son tuo, insieme, con tutto quello ch’è mio.

5 Ed i messi ritornarono, e dissero: Così ha detto Ben-hadad: Anzi io ti avea mandato a dire: Dammi il tuo argento, e il tuo oro, e le tue mogli, ed i tuoi figliuoli;

6 altrimenti, domani a quest’ora io ti manderò i miei servitori, che ricercheranno la tua casa, e le case de’ tuoi servitori, e metteranno nelle mani loro tutto quello che ti è il più caro, e lo porteranno via.

7 Allora il re d’Israele chiamò tutti gli Anziani del paese, e disse: Deh! considerate, e vedete come costui cerca il male; perciocchè egli ha mandato a me per aver le mie mogli, e i miei figliuoli, e l’argento mio, e l’oro mio; ed io non gli ho rifiutato nulla.

8 E tutti gli Anziani e tutto il popolo gli dissero: Non ascoltarlo, e non compiacergli.

9 Egli adunque disse a’ messi di Ben-hadad: Dite al re, mio signore: Io farò tutto quello che tu mandasti a dire la prima volta al tuo servitore; ma questo, io nol posso fare. Ed i messi andarono, e portarono quella risposta a Ben-hadad.

10 E Ben-hadad mandò a dire ad Achab: Così mi facciano gl’iddii, e così aggiungano, se la polvere di Samaria basterà, acciocchè ciascuno della gente, che è al mio seguito, ne abbia pieni i pugni.

11 E il re d’Israele rispose, e disse: Ditegli: Non gloriisi colui che si allaccia l’armi come colui che le dislaccia.

12 E quando Ben-hadad ebbe intesa quella risposta, bevendo, insieme con quei re, nelle tende, disse a’ suoi servitori: Mettetevi in ordine. Ed essi si misero in ordine contro alla città.

13 Allora un profeta si accostò ad Achab, re d’Israele, e disse: Così ha detto il Signore: Hai tu veduta tutta questa gran moltitudine? ecco, oggi io la do nelle tue mani; e tu conoscerai che io sono il Signore.

14 Ed Achab disse: Per cui? Ed esso disse: Così ha detto il Signore: Per li fanti de’ governatori delle provincie. E Achab disse: Chi attaccherà la zuffa? Ed esso disse: Tu.

15 Allora egli fece la rassegna de’ fanti de’ governatori delle provincie, e se ne trovò dugentrentadue. E dopo loro, fece la rassegna di tutta la gente di tutti i figliuoli d’Israele, e se ne trovò settemila.

16 Ed essi uscirono in sul mezzodì. Or Bed-hadad beveva, ed era ebbro nelle tende, insieme co’ trentadue re ch’erano venuti a suo soccorso.

17 E i fanti dei governatori delle provincie uscirono i primi; e Ben-hadad mandò alcuni, per vedere che cosa ciò fosse, ed essi gliel rapportarono, dicendo: Alcuni uomini sono usciti di Samaria.

18 Ed egli disse: O per pace o per guerra che sieno usciti, pigliateli vivi.

19 Coloro adunque, cioè i fanti de governatori delle provincie, uscirono della città; poi uscì l’esercito che veniva dietro a loro.

20 E ciascuno di essi percosse il suo uomo; ed i Siri fuggirono, e gl’Israeliti li perseguitarono; e Ben-hadad, re di Siria, scampò sopra un cavallo, con alcuni cavalieri.

21 E il re d’Israele uscì fuori, e percosse i cavalli ed i carri, e fece una grande sconfitta dei Siri.

22 Allora quel profeta venne al re d’Israele, e gli disse: Va’, rinforzati, e considera, e vedi ciò che tu avrai da fare; perciocchè di qui ad un anno il re di Siria salirà di nuovo contro a te.

23 Ed i servitori del re di Siria gli dissero: Gl’iddii degl’Israeliti son dii delle montagne, e però ci hanno vinti; ma combattiamo contro a loro nella pianura, e tu vedrai se noi non li vinciamo.

24 Ma fa’ questo: leva ciascuno di quei re dal suo carico, e metti in luogo loro dei capitani;

25 poi leva un esercito pari all’esercito che ti è stato sconfitto, ed altrettanti cavalli e carri; e noi combatteremo contro a loro nella pianura; e tu vedrai se noi non li vinciamo. Ed egli acconsentì al lor dire, e fece così.

26 E l’anno seguente, Ben-hadad fece la rassegna de’ Siri, e salì in Afec, per guerreggiare contro ad Israele.

27 I figliuoli d’Israele fecero parimente la lor rassegna; e provvedutisi di vittuaglia, andarono incontro a’ Siri, e si accamparono dirimpetto a loro, e parevano due piccole gregge di capre; ma i Siri empievano la terra.

28 Allora l’uomo di Dio si accostò al re d’Israele, e gli disse: Così ha detto il Signore: Perciocchè i Siri hanno detto: Il Signore è Dio de’ monti, e non è Dio delle valli, io ti darò nelle mani tutta questa gran moltitudine, e voi conoscerete che io sono il Signore.

29 E stettero accampati gli uni dirincontro agli altri per sette giorni; ed al settimo giorno si diede la battaglia; ed i figliuoli d’Israele percossero in un giorno centomila uomini a piè de’ Siri.

30 E il rimanente fuggì in Afec, dentro alla città, ove il muro cadde sopra ventisettemila uomini ch’erano rimasti. Ben-hadad fuggì anch’esso; e giunto nella città, passava di camera in camera.

31 Ed i suoi servitori gli dissero: Ecco ora, noi abbiamo udito dire che i re della casa d’Israele son re benigni; ora dunque lascia che noi ci mettiamo de’ sacchi sopra i lombi, e delle corde al collo, ed usciamo al re d’Israele; forse ti scamperà egli la vita.

32 Essi adunque si cinsero de’ sacchi in su i lombi, e si misero delle corde al collo, e vennero al re di Israele, e dissero: Il tuo servitore Ben-hadad dice così; Deh! che io viva. Ed egli disse: È egli ancora vivo? egli è mio fratello.

33 E quegli uomini presero di ciò buon augurio; e prestamente gli trassero di bocca ciò che si poteva sperar da lui; e gli dissero: È Ben-hadad tuo fratello? Ed egli disse: Andate, e menatelo qua. Ben-hadad adunque venne fuori ad Achab; ed egli lo fece salire sopra il suo carro.

34 E Ben-hadad gli disse: Io ti restituirò le città che mio padre tolse a tuo padre; e tu ti costituirai delle piazze in Damasco, come mio padre se ne avea costituite in Samaria. Ed io, disse Achab, ti lascerò andare con questi patti. Così patteggiò con lui, e lo lasciò andare.

35 Allora un uomo d’infra i figliuoli dei profeti, disse al suo compagno per parola del Signore: Deh! percuotimi.

36 Ma colui ricusò di percuoterlo. Ed egli disse: Perciocchè tu non hai ubbidito alla voce del Signore, ecco, quando tu te ne andrai d’appresso a me, un leone ti ucciderà. E quando egli si fu partito d’appresso a lui, un leone lo scontrò, e l’uccise.

37 Poi egli scontrò un altr’uomo, e gli disse: Deh! percuotimi; e colui lo percosse, e lo ferì.

38 E il profeta andò, e si presentò al re in su la via, essendosi travestito, con una benda in su gli occhi.

39 E come il re passava, egli gridò al re, e disse: Il tuo servitore era passato in mezzo alla battaglia; ed ecco, un uomo venne, e mi menò un uomo, e mi disse: Guarda quest’uomo; se pure egli viene a mancare, la tua persona sarà per la sua, ovvero tu pagherai un talento d’argento.

40 Ora, come il tuo servitore faceva certe sue faccende qua e là, colui non si trovò più. E il re d’Israele gli disse: Tale è la tua sentenza; tu stesso ne hai fatta la decisione.

41 Allora egli prestamente si levò la benda d’in su gli occhi; e il re d’Israele lo riconobbe, ch’egli era uno de’ profeti.

42 Ed egli disse al re: Così ha detto il Signore: Perciocchè tu hai lasciato andarne dalle tue mani l’uomo che io avea messo all’interdetto, la tua persona sarà per la sua, e il tuo popolo per lo suo.

43 E il re d’Israele se ne andò in casa sua, conturbato e sdegnato, e venne in Samaria.

Good News Translation GNT

1 King Benhadad of Syria gathered all his troops, and supported by thirty-two other rulers with their horses and chariots, he marched up, laid siege to Samaria, and launched attacks against it.

2 He sent messengers into the city to King Ahab of Israel to say, "King Benhadad demands that

3 you surrender to him your silver and gold, your women and the strongest of your children."

4 "Tell my lord, King Benhadad, that I agree; he can have me and everything I own," Ahab answered.

5 Later the messengers came back to Ahab with another demand from Benhadad: "I sent you word that you were to hand over to me your silver and gold, your women and your children.

6 Now, however, I will send my officers to search your palace and the homes of your officials, and to take everything they consider valuable. They will be there about this time tomorrow."

7 King Ahab called in all the leaders of the country and said, "You see that this man wants to ruin us. He sent me a message demanding my wives and children, my silver and gold, and I agreed."

8 The leaders and the people answered, "Don't pay any attention to him; don't give in."

9 So Ahab replied to Benhadad's messengers, "Tell my lord the king that I agreed to his first demand, but I cannot agree to the second." The messengers left and then returned with another message

10 from Benhadad: "I will bring enough men to destroy this city of yours and carry off the rubble in their hands. May the gods strike me dead if I don't!"

11 King Ahab answered, "Tell King Benhadad that a real soldier does his bragging [after] a battle, not before it."

12 Benhadad received Ahab's answer as he and his allies, the other rulers, were drinking in their tents. He ordered his men to get ready to attack the city, and so they moved into position.

13 Meanwhile, a prophet went to King Ahab and said, "The Lord says, "Don't be afraid of that huge army! I will give you victory over it today, and you will know that I am the Lord.' "

14 "Who will lead the attack?" Ahab asked. The prophet answered, "The Lord says that the young soldiers under the command of the district governors are to do it." "Who will command the main force?" the king asked. "You," the prophet answered.

15 So the king called out the young soldiers who were under the district commanders, 232 in all. Then he called out the Israelite army, a total of seven thousand men.

16 The attack began at noon, as Benhadad and his thirty-two allies were getting drunk in their tents.

17 The young soldiers advanced first. Scouts sent out by Benhadad reported to him that a group of soldiers was coming out of Samaria.

18 He ordered, "Take them alive, no matter whether they are coming to fight or to ask for peace."

19 The young soldiers led the attack, followed by the Israelite army,

20 and each one killed the man he fought. The Syrians fled, with the Israelites in hot pursuit, but Benhadad escaped on horseback, accompanied by some of the cavalry.

21 King Ahab took to the field, captured the horses and chariots, and inflicted a severe defeat on the Syrians.

22 Then the prophet went to King Ahab and said, "Go back and build up your forces and make careful plans, because the king of Syria will attack again next spring."

23 King Benhadad's officials said to him, "The gods of Israel are mountain gods, and that is why the Israelites defeated us. But we will certainly defeat them if we fight them in the plains.

24 Now, remove the thirty-two rulers from their commands and replace them with field commanders.

25 Then call up an army as large as the one that deserted you, with the same number of horses and chariots. We will fight the Israelites in the plains, and this time we will defeat them." King Benhadad agreed and followed their advice.

26 The following spring he called up his men and marched with them to the city of Aphek to attack the Israelites.

27 The Israelites were called up and equipped; they marched out and camped in two groups facing the Syrians. The Israelites looked like two small flocks of goats compared to the Syrians, who spread out over the countryside.

28 A prophet went to King Ahab and said, "This is what the Lord says: "Because the Syrians say that I am a god of the hills and not of the plains, I will give you victory over their huge army, and you and your people will know that I am the Lord.' "

29 For seven days the Syrians and the Israelites stayed in their camps, facing each other. On the seventh day they started fighting, and the Israelites killed a hundred thousand Syrians.

30 The survivors fled into the city of Aphek, where the city walls fell on twenty-seven thousand of them. Benhadad also escaped into the city and took refuge in the back room of a house.

31 His officials went to him and said, "We have heard that the Israelite kings are merciful. Give us permission to go to the king of Israel with sackcloth around our waists and ropes around our necks, and maybe he will spare your life."

32 So they wrapped sackcloth around their waists and ropes around their necks, went to Ahab and said, "Your servant Benhadad pleads with you for his life." Ahab answered, "Is he still alive? Good! He's like a brother to me!"

33 Benhadad's officials were watching for a good sign, and when Ahab said "brother," they took it up at once, and said, "As you say, Benhadad is your brother!" "Bring him to me," Ahab ordered. When Benhadad arrived, Ahab invited him to get in the chariot with him.

34 Benhadad said to him, "I will restore to you the towns my father took from your father, and you may set up a commercial center for yourself in Damascus, just as my father did in Samaria." Ahab replied, "On these terms, then, I will set you free." He made a treaty with him and let him go.

35 At the Lord's command a member of a group of prophets ordered a fellow prophet to hit him. But he refused,

36 so he said to him, "Because you have disobeyed the Lord's command, a lion will kill you as soon as you leave me." And as soon as he left, a lion came along and killed him.

37 Then this same prophet went to another man and said, "Hit me!" This man did so; he hit him a hard blow and hurt him.

38 The prophet bandaged his face with a cloth, to disguise himself, and went and stood by the road, waiting for the king of Israel to pass.

39 As the king was passing by, the prophet called out to him and said, "Your Majesty, I was fighting in the battle when a soldier brought a captured enemy to me and said, "Guard this man; if he escapes, you will pay for it with your life or else pay a fine of three thousand pieces of silver.'

40 But I got busy with other things, and the man escaped." The king answered, "You have pronounced your own sentence, and you will have to pay the penalty."

41 The prophet tore the cloth from his face, and at once the king recognized him as one of the prophets.

42 The prophet then said to the king, "This is the word of the Lord: "Because you allowed the man to escape whom I had ordered to be killed, you will pay for it with your life, and your army will be destroyed for letting his army escape.' "

43 The king went back home to Samaria, worried and depressed.
