1 ORA, dopo queste cose, avvenne che, avendo Nabot Izreelita una vigna, la quale era in Izreel, presso del palazzo di Achab, re di Samaria, Achab parlò a Nabot, dicendo:

2 Dammi la tua vigna, acciocchè io ne faccia un orto da erbe; perciocchè ell’è vicina allato alla mia casa; ed io te ne darò in iscambio una migliore; ovvero, se ti aggrada, io ti darò danari per lo prezzo di essa.

3 Ma Nabot rispose ad Achab: Tolga il Signore da me che io ti dia l’eredità de’ miei padri.

4 Ed Achab se ne venne in casa sua, conturbato e sdegnato, per la parola che Nabot Izreelita gli avea detta, cioè: Io non ti darò l’eredità dei miei padri; e si coricò sopra il suo letto, e rivoltò la faccia indietro, e non prese cibo.

5 Allora Izebel, sua moglie, venne a lui, e gli disse: Che cosa è questo, che tu sei così conturbato nello spirito, e non prendi cibo?

6 Ed egli le disse: Perchè io avea parlato a Nabot Izreelita, e gli avea detto: Dammi la tua vigna per danari; ovvero, se così ti aggrada, io te ne darò un’altra in iscambio. Ma egli ha detto: Io non ti darò la mia vigna.

7 Ed Izebel, sua moglie, gli disse: Eserciteresti tu ora il regno sopra Israele? levati, prendi cibo, e sia il cuor tuo lieto; io ti farò avere la vigna di Nabot Izreelita.

8 Ed ella scrisse lettere a nome di Achab, e le suggellò col suggello di esso, e le mandò agli Anziani e a’ principali della città di Nabot, che abitavano con lui.

9 E scrisse in quelle lettere in questa maniera: Bandite il digiuno, e fate stare Nabot in capo del popolo;

10 e fate comparire contro a lui due uomini scellerati, i quali testimonino contro a lui, dicendo: Tu hai bestemmiato Iddio ed il re. Poi menatelo fuori, e lapidatelo, sì che muoia.

11 E la gente della città di Nabot, gli Anziani, e i principali che abitavano nella città di esso, fecero come Izebel avea lor mandato, secondo ch’era scritto nelle lettere che avea lor mandate.

12 E bandirono il digiuno, e fecero star Nabot in capo del popolo.

13 Poi vennero que’ due uomini scellerati, e si presentarono contro a Nabot, e testimoniarono contro a lui, davanti al popolo, dicendo: Nabot ha bestemmiato Iddio ed il re. Laonde coloro lo menarono fuori della città, e lo lapidarono, sì ch’egli morì.

14 Poi mandarono a dire ad Izebel: Nabot è stato lapidato, ed è morto.

15 E quando Izebel ebbe inteso che Nabot era stato lapidato, e ch’era morto, disse ad Achab: Levati, prendi la possessione della vigna di Nabot Izreelita, la quale egli avea ricusato di darti per danari; perciocchè Nabot non vive più, ma è morto.

16 E quando Achab, ebbe udito che Nabot era morto, si levò per iscendere alla vigna di Nabot Izreelita, per prenderne la possessione.

17 Allora la parola del Signore fu indirizzata ad Elia Tisbita, dicendo:

18 Levati, scendi incontro ad Achab, re d’Israele, il quale risiede in Samaria; ecco, egli è nella vigna di Nabot, dove egli è sceso, per prenderne la possessione.

19 E parla a lui, dicendo: Così ha detto il Signore: Avresti tu ucciso, e anche possederesti? Poi digli: Come i cani hanno leccato il sangue di Nabot, leccheranno altresì il tuo.

20 Ed Achab disse ad Elia: Mi hai tu trovato, nemico mio? Ed egli gli disse: Si, io ti ho trovato; perciocchè tu ti sei venduto a far ciò che dispiace al Signore.

21 Ecco, dice il Signore, io ti fo venire del male addosso, e torrò via chi verrà dietro a te, e sterminerò ad Achab fino al piccolo bambino, chi è serrato, e chi è abbandonato in Israele;

22 e ridurrò la tua casa come la casa di Geroboamo, figliuolo di Nebat; e come la casa di Baasa, figliuolo di Ahia; perciocchè tu mi hai provocato ad ira, ed hai fatto peccare Israele.

23 Il Signore parlò eziandio contro ad Izebel, dicendo: I cani mangeranno Izebel all’antimuro d’Izreel.

24 Colui della casa di Achab, che morrà dentro alla città, i cani lo mangeranno; e colui che morrà per li campi, gli uccelli lo mangeranno.

25 E veramente non vi era stato ancora alcuno simile ad Achab, il quale si era venduto a far ciò che dispiace al Signore; perciocchè Izebel, sua moglie, l’incitava.

26 Laonde egli fece cose molto abbominevoli, andando dietro agl’idoli, interamente come aveano fatto gli Amorrei, i quali il Signore avea scacciati d’innanzi a’ figliuoli d’Israele.

27 E quando Achab ebbe udite quelle parole, stracciò i suoi vestimenti, e si mise un sacco sopra le carni e digiunò, e giacque in sacco, e camminava a passo lento.

28 E la parola del Signore fu indirizzata ad Elia Tisbita, dicendo:

29 Hai tu veduto come Achab si è umiliato davanti a me? Perciocchè egli si è umiliato davanti a me, io non farò venir quel male a’ suoi dì; io lo farò venir sopra la casa sua, a’ dì del suo figliuolo.

1 Near King Ahab's palace in Jezreel there was a vineyard owned by a man named Naboth.

2 One day Ahab said to Naboth, "Let me have your vineyard; it is close to my palace, and I want to use the land for a vegetable garden. I will give you a better vineyard for it or, if you prefer, I will pay you a fair price."

3 "I inherited this vineyard from my ancestors," Naboth replied. "The Lord forbid that I should let you have it!"

4 Ahab went home, depressed and angry over what Naboth had said to him. He lay down on his bed, facing the wall, and would not eat.

5 His wife Jezebel went to him and asked, "Why are you so depressed? Why won't you eat?"

6 He answered, "Because of what Naboth said to me. I offered to buy his vineyard or, if he preferred, to give him another one for it, but he told me that I couldn't have it!"

7 "Well, are you the king or aren't you?" Jezebel replied. "Get out of bed, cheer up, and eat. I will get you Naboth's vineyard!"

8 Then she wrote some letters, signed Ahab's name to them, sealed them with his seal, and sent them to the officials and leading citizens of Jezreel.

9 The letters said: "Proclaim a day of fasting, call the people together, and give Naboth the place of honor.

10 Get a couple of scoundrels to accuse him to his face of cursing God and the king. Then take him out of the city and stone him to death."

11 The officials and leading citizens of Jezreel did what Jezebel had commanded.

12 They proclaimed a day of fasting, called the people together, and gave Naboth the place of honor.

13 The two scoundrels publicly accused him of cursing God and the king, and so he was taken outside the city and stoned to death.

14 The message was sent to Jezebel: "Naboth has been put to death."

15 As soon as Jezebel received the message, she said to Ahab, "Naboth is dead. Now go and take possession of the vineyard which he refused to sell to you."

16 At once Ahab went to the vineyard to take possession of it.

17 Then the Lord said to Elijah, the prophet from Tishbe,

18 "Go to King Ahab of Samaria. You will find him in Naboth's vineyard, about to take possession of it.

19 Tell him that I, the Lord, say to him, "After murdering the man, are you taking over his property as well?' Tell him that this is what I say: "In the very place that the dogs licked up Naboth's blood they will lick up your blood!' "

20 When Ahab saw Elijah, he said, "Have you caught up with me, my enemy?" "Yes, I have," Elijah answered. "You have devoted yourself completely to doing what is wrong in the Lord's sight.

21 So the Lord says to you, "I will bring disaster on you. I will do away with you and get rid of every male in your family, young and old alike.

22 Your family will become like the family of King Jeroboam son of Nebat and like the family of King Baasha son of Ahijah, because you have stirred up my anger by leading Israel into sin.'

23 And concerning Jezebel, the Lord says that dogs will eat her body in the city of Jezreel.

24 Any of your relatives who die in the city will be eaten by dogs, and any who die in the open country will be eaten by vultures."

25 (There was no one else who had devoted himself so completely to doing wrong in the Lord's sight as Ahab - all at the urging of his wife Jezebel.

26 He committed the most shameful sins by worshiping idols, as the Amorites had done, whom the Lord had driven out of the land as the people of Israel advanced.)

27 When Elijah finished speaking, Ahab tore his clothes, took them off, and put on sackcloth. He refused food, slept in the sackcloth, and went about gloomy and depressed.

28 The Lord said to the prophet Elijah,

29 "Have you noticed how Ahab has humbled himself before me? Since he has done this, I will not bring disaster on him during his lifetime; it will be during his son's lifetime that I will bring disaster on Ahab's family."
