1 ORA i Siri e gl’Israeliti stettero tre anni senza guerra fra loro.

2 Ma l’anno terzo, essendo Giosafat, re di Giuda, sceso al re d’Israele,

3 il re d’Israele disse a’ suoi servitori: Non sapete voi che Ramot di Galaad è nostra? e pur noi non parliamo di ripigliarla dalle mani del re di Siria.

4 Poi disse a Giosafat: Andrai tu meco alla guerra contro a Ramot di Galaad? E Giosafat disse al re d’Israele: Fa’ conto di me come di te, e della mia gente come della tua, e de’ miei cavalli come de’ tuoi.

5 Ma Giosafat disse al re d’Israele: Deh! domanda oggi la parola del Signore.

6 E il re d’Israele adunò i profeti, in numero d’intorno a quattrocent’uomini, e disse loro: Andrò io alla guerra contro a Ramot di Galaad; ovvero, me ne rimarrò io? Ed essi dissero: Vacci; e il Signore la darà nelle mani del re.

7 Ma Giosafat disse: Evvi qui più niun profeta del Signore, il quale noi domandiamo?

8 E il re d’Israele disse a Giosafat: Vi è bene ancora un uomo, per lo quale noi potremmo domandare il Signore; ma io l’odio; perciocchè egli non mi profetizza giammai del bene, anzi del male; egli è Mica, figliuolo di Imla. E Giosafat disse: Il re non dica così.

9 Allora il re d’Israele chiamò un eunuco, e gli disse: Fa’ prestamente venir Mica, figliuolo d’Imla.

10 Ora il re d’Israele, e Giosafat, re di Giuda, sedevano ciascuno sopra il suo seggio, vestiti d’abiti reali, nell’aia che è all’entrata della porta di Samaria, e tutti i profeti profetizzavano in presenza loro.

11 Or Sedechia, figliuolo di Chenaana, si avea fatte delle corna di ferro, e disse: Così ha detto il Signore: Con queste corna tu cozzerai i Siri, finchè tu li abbia consumati.

12 E tutti i profeti profetizzavano in quella medesima maniera, dicendo: Sali contro a Ramot di Galaad, e tu prospererai, e il Signore la darà in mano del re.

13 Ora il messo ch’era andato a chiamar Mica, gli parlò, dicendo: Ecco ora, i profeti tutti ad una voce predicono del bene al re; deh! sia il tuo parlare conforme al parlare dell’uno di essi, e predicigli del bene.

14 Ma Mica disse: Come il Signore vive, io dirò ciò che il Signore mi avrà detto.

15 Egli adunque venne al re. E il re gli disse: Mica, andremo noi alla guerra contro a Ramot di Galaad; ovvero, ce ne rimarremo noi? Ed egli gli disse: Va’ pure, e tu prospererai, e il Signore la darà in mano del re.

16 E il re gli disse: Fino a quante volte ti scongiurerò io che tu non mi dica altro che la verità, a nome del Signore?

17 Allora egli gli disse: Io vedeva tutto Israele sparso su per i monti, come pecore che non hanno pastore; e il Signore diceva: Costoro son senza signore; ritornisene ciascuno a casa sua in pace.

18 Allora il re d’Israele disse a Giosafat: Non ti diss’io, ch’egli non mi profetizzerebbe alcun bene, anzi del male?

19 E Mica gli disse: Perciò, ascolta la parola del Signore: Io vedeva il Signore assiso sopra il suo trono, e tutto l’esercito del cielo ch’era presente davanti a lui, a destra ed a sinistra.

20 E il Signore disse: Chi indurrà Achab, acciocchè salga contro a Ramot di Galaad, e vi muoia? E l’uno diceva una cosa, e l’altro un’altra.

21 Allora uscì fuori uno spirito, il quale si presentò davanti al Signore, e disse: Io l’indurrò. E il Signore gli disse: Come?

22 Ed egli disse: Io uscirò fuori, e sarò spirito di menzogna nella bocca di tutti i suoi profeti. E il Signore gli disse: Sì, tu l’indurrai, e anche ne verrai a capo; esci fuori, e fa’ così.

23 Ora dunque, ecco, il Signore ha messo uno spirito di menzogna nella bocca di tutti questi tuoi profeti, e il Signore ha pronunziato del male contro a te.

24 Allora Sedechia, figliuolo di Chenaana, si accostò, e percosse Mica in su la guancia, e disse: Onde si è partito lo Spirito del Signore da me, per parlar teco?

25 E Mica disse: Ecco, tu il vedrai al giorno che tu entrerai di camera in camera per appiattarti.

26 E il re d’Israele disse ad uno: Prendi Mica, e menalo ad Amon, capitano della città, ed a Gioas, figliuolo del re.

27 E di’ loro: Così ha detto il re: Mettete costui in prigione, e cibatelo di pane e d’acqua strettamente, finchè io ritorni in pace.

28 E Mica disse: Se pur tu ritorni in pace, il Signore non avrà parlato per me. Poi disse: Voi, popoli tutti, ascoltate.

29 Il re d’Israele adunque salì con Giosafat, re di Giuda, contro a Ramot di Galaad.

30 E il re d’Israele disse a Giosafat: Io mi travestirò, e così entrerò nella battaglia; ma tu, vestiti delle tue vesti. Il re d’Israele adunque si travestì, e così entrò nella battaglia.

31 Ora il re di Siria avea comandato ai suoi capitani de’ carri, ch’erano trentadue: Non combattete contro a piccoli, nè contro a grandi, ma contro al re d’Israele solo.

32 Perciò, quando i capitani de’ carri ebbero veduto Giosafat, dissero: Certo, egli è il re d’Israele; e si voltarono a lui, per combatter contro a lui; ma Giosafat gridò.

33 E quando i capitani de’ carri ebber veduto ch’egli non era il re d’Israele, si rivolsero indietro da lui.

34 Allora qualcuno tirò con l’arco a caso, e ferì il re d’Israele fra le falde e la corazza; laonde egli disse al suo carrettiere: Volta la mano, e menami fuor del campo; perciocchè io son ferito.

35 Ma la battaglia si rinforzò in quel dì; onde il re fu rattenuto nel carro contro a’ Siri, e morì in su la sera; e il sangue della piaga colò nel cavo del carro.

36 E come il sole tramontava, passò un bando per il campo, dicendo: Riducasi ciascuno alla sua città, ed al suo paese.

37 E il re morì, e fu portato in Samaria, e quivi fu seppellito.

38 E il carro fu tuffato nel vivaio di Samaria; le arme vi furono eziandio lavate; ed i cani leccarono il sangue di Achab, secondo la parola del Signore ch’egli avea pronunziata.

39 Ora, quant’è al rimanente de’ fatti di Achab, e tutto quello ch’egli fece, e la casa d’avorio ch’egli edificò, e tutte le città ch’egli edificò; queste cose non sono esse scritte nel Libro delle Croniche dei re d’Israele?

40 Così Achab giacque co’ suoi padri; ed Achazia, suo figliuolo, regnò in luogo suo.

41 OR Giosafat, figliuolo di Asa, avea cominciato a regnare sopra Giuda l’anno quarto di Achab, re d’Israele.

42 E Giosafat era d’età di trentacinque anni, quando cominciò a regnare, e regnò venticinque anni in Gerusalemme. E il nome di sua madre era Azuba, figliuola di Silai.

43 Ed egli camminò per tutte le vie di Asa, suo padre, e non se ne rivolse, facendo ciò che piace al Signore. (H22-44) Nondimeno gli alti luoghi non furono tolti via; il popolo sacrificava ancora e faceva profumi negli alti luoghi.

46 (H22-47) Egli tolse ancora via dal paese il rimanente de’ cinedi, ch’erano rimasti al tempo di Asa, suo padre.

47 (H22-48) Or in quel tempo non vi era re in Edom; il Governatore era in luogo del re.

48 (H22-49) Giosafat fece un navilio di Tarsis, per andare in Ofir, per dell’oro; ma non andò; perciocchè le navi si ruppero in Esion-gheber.

49 (H22-50) Allora Achazia, figliuolo di Achab, disse a Giosafat: Vadano i miei servitori co’ tuoi, sopra il navilio; ma Giosafat non volle.

50 (H22-51) E Giosafat giacque co’ suoi padri, e fu seppellito co’ suoi padri nella Città di Davide, suo padre; e Gioram, suo figliuolo, regnò in luogo suo.

51 (H22-52) Achazia, figliuolo di Achab, cominciò a regnare sopra Israele, in Samaria, l’anno decimosettimo di Giosafat, re di Giuda; e regnò due anni sopra Israele.

52 (H22-53) E fece quello che dispiace al Signore, e camminò per la via di suo padre e di sua madre; e per la via di Geroboamo, figliuolo di Nebat, il quale avea fatto peccare Israele.

53 (H22-54) E servì a Baal, e l’adorò, e dispettò il Signore Iddio d’Israele, interamente come avea fatto suo padre.

1 There was peace between Israel and Syria for the next two years,

2 but in the third year King Jehoshaphat of Judah went to see King Ahab of Israel.

3 Ahab asked his officials, "Why is it that we have not done anything to get back Ramoth in Gilead from the king of Syria? It belongs to us!"

4 And Ahab asked Jehoshaphat, "Will you go with me to attack Ramoth?" "I am ready when you are," Jehoshaphat answered, "and so are my soldiers and my cavalry.

5 But first let's consult the Lord."

6 So Ahab called in the prophets, about four hundred of them, and asked them, "Should I go and attack Ramoth, or not?" "Attack it," they answered. "The Lord will give you victory."

7 But Jehoshaphat asked, "Isn't there another prophet through whom we can consult the Lord?"

8 Ahab answered, "There is one more, Micaiah son of Imlah. But I hate him because he never prophesies anything good for me; it's always something bad." "You shouldn't say that!" Jehoshaphat replied.

9 Then Ahab called in a court official and told him to go and get Micaiah at once.

10 The two kings, dressed in their royal robes, were sitting on their thrones at the threshing place just outside the gate of Samaria, and all the prophets were prophesying in front of them.

11 One of them, Zedekiah son of Chenaanah, made iron horns and said to Ahab, "This is what the Lord says: "With these you will fight the Syrians and totally defeat them.' "

12 All the other prophets said the same thing. "March against Ramoth and you will win," they said. "The Lord will give you victory."

13 Meanwhile, the official who had gone to get Micaiah said to him, "All the other prophets have prophesied success for the king, and you had better do the same."

14 But Micaiah answered, "By the living Lord I promise that I will say what he tells me to!"

15 When he appeared before King Ahab, the king asked him, "Micaiah, should King Jehoshaphat and I go and attack Ramoth, or not?" "Attack!" Micaiah answered. "Of course you'll win. The Lord will give you victory."

16 But Ahab replied, "When you speak to me in the name of the Lord, tell the truth! How many times do I have to tell you that?"

17 Micaiah answered, "I can see the army of Israel scattered over the hills like sheep without a shepherd. And the Lord said, "These men have no leader; let them go home in peace.' "

18 Ahab said to Jehoshaphat, "Didn't I tell you that he never prophesies anything good for me? It's always something bad!"

19 Micaiah went on: "Now listen to what the Lord says! I saw the Lord sitting on his throne in heaven, with all his angels standing beside him.

20 The Lord asked, "Who will deceive Ahab so that he will go and be killed at Ramoth?' Some of the angels said one thing, and others said something else,

21 until a spirit stepped forward, approached the Lord, and said, "I will deceive him.'

22 "How?' the Lord asked. The spirit replied, "I will go and make all of Ahab's prophets tell lies.' The Lord said, "Go and deceive him. You will succeed.' "

23 And Micaiah concluded: "This is what has happened. The Lord has made these prophets of yours lie to you. But he himself has decreed that you will meet with disaster!"

24 Then the prophet Zedekiah went up to Micaiah, slapped his face, and asked, "Since when did the Lord's spirit leave me and speak to you?"

25 "You will find out when you go into some back room to hide," Micaiah replied.

26 Then King Ahab ordered one of his officers, "Arrest Micaiah and take him to Amon, the governor of the city, and to Prince Joash.

27 Tell them to throw him in prison and to put him on bread and water until I return safely."

28 "If you return safely," Micaiah exclaimed, "then the Lord has not spoken through me!" And he added, "Listen, everyone, to what I have said!"

29 Then King Ahab of Israel and King Jehoshaphat of Judah went to attack the city of Ramoth in Gilead.

30 Ahab said to Jehoshaphat, "As we go into battle, I will disguise myself, but you wear your royal garments." So the king of Israel went into battle in disguise.

31 The king of Syria had ordered his thirty-two chariot commanders to attack no one else except the king of Israel.

32 So when they saw King Jehoshaphat, they all thought that he was the king of Israel, and they turned to attack him. But when he cried out,

33 they realized that he was not the king of Israel, and they stopped their attack.

34 By chance, however, a Syrian soldier shot an arrow which struck King Ahab between the joints of his armor. "I'm wounded!" he cried out to his chariot driver. "Turn around and pull out of the battle!"

35 While the battle raged on, King Ahab remained propped up in his chariot, facing the Syrians. The blood from his wound ran down and covered the bottom of the chariot, and at evening he died.

36 Near sunset the order went out through the Israelite ranks: "Each of you go back to your own country and city!"

37 So died King Ahab. His body was taken to Samaria and buried.

38 His chariot was cleaned up at the pool of Samaria, where dogs licked up his blood and prostitutes washed themselves, as the Lord had said would happen.

39 Everything else that King Ahab did, including an account of his palace decorated with ivory and of all the cities he built, is recorded in [The History of the Kings of Israel.]

40 At his death his son Ahaziah succeeded him as king.

41 In the fourth year of the reign of King Ahab of Israel, Jehoshaphat son of Asa became king of Judah

42 at the age of thirty-five, and he ruled in Jerusalem for twenty-five years. His mother was Azubah, the daughter of Shilhi.

43 Like his father Asa before him, he did what was right in the sight of the Lord; but the places of worship were not destroyed, and the people continued to offer sacrifices and burn incense there.

44 Jehoshaphat made peace with the king of Israel.

45 Everything else that Jehoshaphat did, all his bravery and his battles, are recorded in [The History of the Kings of Judah.]

46 He got rid of all the male and female prostitutes serving at the pagan altars who were still left from the days of his father Asa.

47 The land of Edom had no king; it was ruled by a deputy appointed by the king of Judah.

48 King Jehoshaphat had ocean-going ships built to sail to the land of Ophir for gold; but they were wrecked at Eziongeber and never sailed.

49 Then King Ahaziah of Israel offered to let his men sail with Jehoshaphat's men, but Jehoshaphat refused the offer.

50 Jehoshaphat died and was buried in the royal tombs in David's City, and his son Jehoram succeeded him as king.

51 In the seventeenth year of the reign of King Jehoshaphat of Judah, Ahaziah son of Ahab became king of Israel, and he ruled in Samaria for two years.

52 He sinned against the Lord, following the wicked example of his father Ahab, his mother Jezebel, and King Jeroboam, who had led Israel into sin.

53 He worshiped and served Baal, and like his father before him, he aroused the anger of the Lord, the God of Israel.
