1 Y he aquí, un hombre de Dios fue de Judá a Betel por palabra del SEÑOR, cuando Jeroboam estaba junto al altar para quemar incienso.

2 Y clamó contra el altar por palabra del SEÑOR, y dijo: Oh altar, altar, así dice el SEÑOR: "He aquí, a la casa de David le nacerá un hijo, que se llamará Josías; y él sacrificará sobre ti a los sacerdotes de los lugares altos que queman incienso sobre ti, y sobre ti serán quemados huesos humanos."

3 Aquel mismo día dio una señal, diciendo: Esta es la señal de que el SEÑOR ha hablado: "He aquí, el altar se romperá y las cenizas que están sobre él se derramarán."

4 Y aconteció que cuando el rey oyó la palabra que el hombre de Dios había clamado contra el altar de Betel, extendió su mano desde el altar, diciendo: ¡Prendedlo! Pero la mano que extendió contra él se secó, de modo que no podía volverla hacia sí.

5 Y el altar se rompió y las cenizas se derramaron del altar, conforme a la señal que el hombre de Dios había dado por palabra del SEÑOR.

6 El rey respondió, y dijo al hombre de Dios: Te ruego que supliques al SEÑOR tu Dios, y ores por mí, para que mi mano me sea restaurada. El hombre de Dios suplicó al SEÑOR y la mano del rey le fue restaurada, y quedó como antes.

7 Entonces el rey dijo al hombre de Dios: Ven conmigo a casa y refréscate, y te daré una recompensa.

8 Pero el hombre de Dios dijo al rey: Aunque me dieras la mitad de tu casa no iría contigo, y no comería pan ni bebería agua en este lugar.

9 Porque así se me ordenó por palabra del SEÑOR, que me dijo: "No comerás pan, ni beberás agua, ni volverás por el camino que fuiste."

10 Y se fue por otro camino, no regresó por el camino por donde había ido a Betel.

11 Moraba entonces en Betel un anciano profeta; y sus hijos fueron y le contaron todo lo que el hombre de Dios había hecho aquel día en Betel; las palabras que él había hablado al rey, las contaron también a su padre.

12 Y su padre les dijo: ¿Por dónde se fue? Y sus hijos le mostraron el camino por donde se había ido el hombre de Dios que había venido de Judá.

13 Entonces dijo a sus hijos: Aparejadme el asno. Le aparejaron el asno, se montó sobre él,

14 y fue tras el hombre de Dios; lo halló sentado debajo de una encina, y le dijo: ¿Eres tú el hombre de Dios que vino de Judá? Y él respondió: Yo soy.

15 Entonces le dijo: Ven conmigo a casa y come pan.

16 Y él respondió: No puedo volver contigo ni ir contigo; tampoco comeré pan ni beberé agua contigo en este lugar.

17 Porque me vino un mandato por palabra del SEÑOR: "No comerás pan ni beberás agua allí, ni volverás por el camino que fuiste."

18 Y el otro le respondió: Yo también soy profeta como tú, y un ángel me habló por palabra del SEÑOR, diciendo: "Tráelo contigo a tu casa, para que coma pan y beba agua." Pero le estaba mintiendo.

19 Entonces se volvió con él, comió pan en su casa y bebió agua.

20 Y sucedió que cuando ellos estaban a la mesa, la palabra del SEÑOR vino al profeta que le había hecho volver;

21 y él clamó al hombre de Dios que vino de Judá, diciendo: Así dice el SEÑOR: "Porque has desobedecido el mandato del SEÑOR, y no has guardado el mandamiento que el SEÑOR tu Dios te ha ordenado,

22 sino que has vuelto y has comido pan y bebido agua en el lugar del cual El te dijo: 'No comerás pan ni beberás agua', tu cadáver no entrará en el sepulcro de tus padres."

23 Y sucedió que después de haber comido pan y de haber bebido agua, aparejó el asno para él, para el profeta que había hecho volver.

24 Y cuando éste había partido, un león lo encontró en el camino y lo mató, y su cadáver quedó tirado en el camino y el asno estaba junto a él; también el león estaba junto al cadáver.

25 Y he aquí, pasaron unos hombres y vieron el cadáver tirado en el camino y el león que estaba junto al cadáver; y fueron y lo dijeron en la ciudad donde vivía el anciano profeta.

26 Y cuando el profeta que le había hecho volver del camino lo oyó, dijo: Es el hombre de Dios, que desobedeció el mandato del SEÑOR; por tanto el SEÑOR lo ha entregado al león que lo ha desgarrado y matado, conforme a la palabra que el SEÑOR le había hablado.

27 Entonces habló a sus hijos, diciendo: Aparejadme el asno. Y se lo aparejaron.

28 Fue y halló el cadáver tirado en el camino, y el asno y el león estaban junto al cadáver; el león no había comido el cadáver ni desgarrado el asno.

29 El profeta levantó el cadáver del hombre de Dios, lo puso sobre el asno y lo trajo. Vino a la ciudad del anciano profeta para hacer duelo por él y enterrarlo.

30 Puso el cadáver en su propio sepulcro, e hicieron duelo por él, diciendo: ¡Ay, hermano mío!

31 Y sucedió que después de haberlo enterrado, habló a sus hijos, diciendo: Cuando yo muera, enterradme en el sepulcro donde está enterrado el hombre de Dios; poned mis huesos junto a sus huesos.

32 Porque ciertamente sucederá lo que él clamó por palabra del SEÑOR contra el altar en Betel y contra todas las casas de los lugares altos que están en las ciudades de Samaria.

33 Después de este hecho Jeroboam no se volvió de su mal camino, sino que volvió a hacer sacerdotes para los lugares altos de entre el pueblo; al que lo deseaba lo investía para que fuera sacerdote de los lugares altos.

34 Y esto fue motivo de pecado para la casa de Jeroboam, por lo que fue borrada y destruida de sobre la faz de la tierra.

1 And then this happened: Just as Jeroboam was at the Altar, about to make an offering, a holy man came from Judah by God's command

2 and preached (these were God's orders) to the Altar: "Altar, Altar! God's message! 'A son will be born into David's family named Josiah. The priests from the shrines who are making offerings on you, he will sacrifice - on you! Human bones burned on you!'"

3 At the same time he announced a sign: "This is the proof God gives - the Altar will split into pieces and the holy offerings spill into the dirt."

4 When the king heard the message the holy man preached against the Altar at Bethel, he reached out to grab him, yelling, "Arrest him!" But his arm was paralyzed and hung useless.

5 At the same time the Altar broke apart and the holy offerings all spilled into the dirt - the very sign the holy man had announced by God's command.

6 The king pleaded with the holy man, "Help me! Pray to your God for the healing of my arm." The holy man prayed for him and the king's arm was healed - as good as new!

7 Then the king invited the holy man, "Join me for a meal; I have a gift for you."

8 The holy man told the king, "Not on your life! You couldn't pay me enough to get me to sit down with you at a meal in this place.

9 I'm here under God's orders, and he commanded, 'Don't eat a crumb, don't drink a drop, and don't go back the way you came.'"

10 Then he left by a different road than the one on which he had walked to Bethel.

11 There was an old prophet who lived in Bethel. His sons came and told him the story of what the holy man had done that day in Bethel, told him everything that had happened and what the holy man had said to the king.

12 Their father said, "Which way did he go?" His sons pointed out the road that the holy man from Judah had taken.

13 He told his sons, "Saddle my donkey." When they had saddled it, he got on

14 and rode after the holy man. He found him sitting under an oak tree. He asked him, "Are you the holy man who came from Judah?" "Yes, I am," he said.

15 "Well, come home with me and have a meal."

16 "Sorry, I can't do that," the holy man said. "I can neither go back with you nor eat with you in this country.

17 I'm under strict orders from God: 'Don't eat a crumb; don't drink a drop; and don't come back the way you came.'"

18 But he said, "I am also a prophet, just like you. And an angel came to me with a message from God: 'Bring him home with you, and give him a good meal!'" But the man was lying.

19 So the holy man went home with him and they had a meal together.

20 There they were, sitting at the table together, when the word of God came to the prophet who had brought him back.

21 He confronted the holy man who had come from Judah: "God's word to you: You disobeyed God's command; you didn't keep the strict orders your God gave you;

22 you came back and sat down to a good meal in the very place God told you, 'Don't eat a crumb; don't drink a drop.' For that you're going to die far from home and not be buried in your ancestral tomb."

23 When the meal was over, the prophet who had brought him back saddled his donkey for him.

24 Down the road a way, a lion met him and killed him. His corpse lay crumpled on the road, the lion on one side and the donkey on the other.

25 Some passersby saw the corpse in a heap on the road, with the lion standing guard beside it. They went to the village where the old prophet lived and told what they had seen.

26 When the prophet who had gotten him off track heard it, he said, "It's the holy man who disobeyed God's strict orders. God turned him over to the lion who knocked him around and killed him, just as God had told him."

27 The prophet told his sons, "Saddle my donkey." They did it.

28 He rode out and found the corpse in a heap in the road, with the lion and the donkey standing there. The lion hadn't bothered either the corpse or the donkey.

29 The old prophet loaded the corpse of the holy man on his donkey and returned it to his own town to give it a decent burial.

30 He placed the body in his own tomb. The people mourned, saying, "A sad day, brother!"

31 After the funeral, the prophet said to his sons, "When I die, bury me in the same tomb where the holy man is buried, my bones alongside his bones.

32 The message that he preached by God's command against the Altar at Bethel and against all the sex-and-religion shrines in the towns of Samaria will come true."

33 After this happened, Jeroboam kept right on doing evil, recruiting priests for the forbidden shrines indiscriminately - anyone who wanted to could be a priest at one of the local shrines.

34 This was the root sin of Jeroboam's government. And it was this that ruined him.
