1 Y subió Nahas amonita y sitió a Jabes de Galaad, y todos los hombres de Jabes dijeron a Nahas: Haz un pacto con nosotros y te serviremos.

2 Pero Nahas amonita les dijo: Lo haré con esta condición: que a todos vosotros os saque yo el ojo derecho; así haré que esto sea una afrenta sobre todo Israel.

3 Y los ancianos de Jabes le dijeron: Danos siete días para que enviemos mensajeros por todo el territorio de Israel. Y si no hay quien nos libre, nos entregaremos a ti.

4 Entonces los mensajeros fueron a Guibeá de Saúl y hablaron estas palabras a oídos del pueblo, y todo el pueblo alzó la voz y lloró.

5 Y sucedió que Saúl regresaba del campo detrás de los bueyes, y dijo: ¿Qué pasa con el pueblo que está llorando? Entonces le contaron las palabras de los mensajeros de Jabes.

6 Y el Espíritu de Dios vino con poder sobre Saúl al escuchar estas palabras, y Saúl se enojó grandemente.

7 Y tomando una yunta de bueyes, los cortó en pedazos y los mandó por todo el territorio de Israel por medio de mensajeros, diciendo: Así se hará a los bueyes del que no salga en pos de Saúl y en pos de Samuel. Entonces el terror del SEÑOR cayó sobre el pueblo, y salieron como un solo hombre.

8 Y los contó en Bezec, y los hijos de Israel eran trescientos mil y los hombres de Judá treinta mil.

9 Y dijeron a los mensajeros que habían venido: Así diréis a los hombres de Jabes de Galaad: "Mañana cuando caliente el sol seréis librados." Entonces los mensajeros fueron y lo anunciaron a los hombres de Jabes, y éstos se regocijaron.

10 Entonces los hombres de Jabes dijeron a Nahas: Mañana saldremos a vosotros y podréis hacernos lo que os parezca bien.

11 A la mañana siguiente Saúl dispuso al pueblo en tres compañías; y entraron en medio del campamento a la vigilia de la mañana, e hirieron a los amonitas hasta que calentó el día. Y sucedió que los que quedaron fueron dispersados, no quedando dos de ellos juntos.

12 Y el pueblo dijo a Samuel: ¿Quién es el que dijo: "¿Ha de reinar Saúl sobre nosotros?" Traed a esos hombres para que los matemos.

13 Pero Saúl dijo: A nadie se matará hoy, porque hoy el SEÑOR ha hecho liberación en Israel.

14 Entonces Samuel dijo al pueblo: Venid, vayamos a Gilgal y renovemos el reino allí.

15 Así que todo el pueblo fue a Gilgal, y allí en Gilgal, hicieron rey a Saúl delante del SEÑOR. Allí también ofrecieron sacrificios de las ofrendas de paz delante del SEÑOR; y se regocijaron grandemente allí Saúl y todos los hombres de Israel.

1 So Nahash went after them and prepared to go to war against Jabesh Gilead. The men of Jabesh petitioned Nahash: "Make a treaty with us and we'll serve you."

2 Nahash said, "I'll make a treaty with you on one condition: that every right eye among you be gouged out! I'll humiliate every last man and woman in Israel before I'm done!"

3 The town leaders of Jabesh said, "Give us time to send messengers around Israel - seven days should do it. If no one shows up to help us, we'll accept your terms."

4 The messengers came to Saul's place at Gibeah and told the people what was going on. As the people broke out in loud wails,

5 Saul showed up. He was coming back from the field with his oxen. Saul asked, "What happened? Why is everyone crying?" And they repeated the message that had come from Jabesh.

6 The Spirit of God came on Saul when he heard the report and he flew into a rage.

7 He grabbed the yoke of oxen and butchered them on the spot. He sent the messengers throughout Israel distributing the bloody pieces with this message: "Anyone who refuses to join up with Saul and Samuel, let this be the fate of his oxen!"

8 Saul took command of the people at Bezek. There were 300,000 men from Israel, another 30,000 from Judah.

9 Saul instructed the messengers, "Tell this to the folk in Jabesh Gilead: 'Help is on the way. Expect it by noon tomorrow.'"

10 sent word to Nahash: "Tomorrow we'll give ourselves up. You can deal with us on your terms."

11 Long before dawn the next day, Saul had strategically placed his army in three groups. At first light they broke into the enemy camp and slaughtered Ammonites until noon. Those who were left ran for their lives, scattering every which way.

12 The people came to Samuel then and said, "Where are those men who said, 'Saul is not fit to rule over us'? Hand them over. We'll kill them!"

13 But Saul said, "Nobody is going to be executed this day. This is the day God saved Israel!

14 Come, let's go to Gilgal and there reconsecrate the kingship."

15 They all trooped out to Gilgal. Before God, they crowned Saul king at Gilgal. And there they worshiped, sacrificing peace offerings. Saul and all Israel celebrated magnificently.
