1 Saúl dijo a su hijo Jonatán y a todos sus siervos que dieran muerte a David; pero Jonatán, hijo de Saúl, apreciaba grandemente a David.

2 Y avisó Jonatán a David, diciendo: Saúl mi padre procura matarte. Ahora pues, te ruego que estés alerta por la mañana, y permanezcas en un lugar secreto y te escondas.

3 Yo saldré y me pondré al lado de mi padre en el campo donde tú te encuentres, y hablaré con mi padre de ti; si descubro algo, te avisaré.

4 Entonces Jonatán habló bien de David a Saúl su padre, y le dijo: No peque el rey contra David su siervo, puesto que él no ha pecado contra ti, y puesto que sus hechos han sido de mucho beneficio para ti.

5 Porque puso su vida en peligro e hirió al filisteo, y el SEÑOR trajo una gran liberación a todo Israel; tú lo viste y te regocijaste. ¿Por qué, pues, pecarás contra sangre inocente, dando muerte a David sin causa?

6 Y escuchó Saúl la voz de Jonatán, y juró: Vive el SEÑOR que no morirá.

7 Entonces Jonatán llamó a David y le comunicó todas estas palabras. Y Jonatán llevó a David ante Saúl, y estuvo en su presencia como antes.

8 Cuando hubo guerra de nuevo, David salió y peleó contra los filisteos, y los derrotó con gran matanza, y huyeron delante de él.

9 Y vino un espíritu malo de parte del SEÑOR sobre Saúl; y estaba él sentado en su casa con su lanza en la mano mientras David tocaba el arpa.

10 Y trató Saúl de clavar a David en la pared con la lanza, pero éste se escurrió de la presencia de Saúl, y la lanza se clavó en la pared; David huyó y escapó aquella noche.

11 Saúl envió mensajeros a la casa de David para vigilarle a fin de matarlo por la mañana; pero Mical, mujer de David, le avisó, diciendo: Si no pones a salvo tu vida esta noche, mañana te darán muerte.

12 Mical descolgó a David por una ventana, y él salió, huyó y escapó.

13 Y tomó Mical el ídolo doméstico y lo puso en la cama, puso a su cabecera una almohada de pelo de cabra y lo cubrió con ropa.

14 Cuando Saúl envió mensajeros para llevarse a David, ella dijo: Está enfermo.

15 Entonces Saúl envió mensajeros a ver a David, diciendo: Traédmelo en la cama, para que yo lo mate.

16 Cuando los mensajeros entraron, he aquí, el ídolo doméstico estaba sobre la cama con la almohada de pelo de cabra a su cabecera.

17 Y Saúl dijo a Mical: ¿Por qué me has engañado de esta manera y has dejado ir a mi enemigo, de modo que ha escapado? Y Mical dijo a Saúl: El me dijo: "Déjame ir, porque si no te mato."

18 Huyó, pues, David y escapó, y fue a donde estaba Samuel en Ramá, y le contó todo lo que Saúl le había hecho. Y él y Samuel fueron y se quedaron en Naiot.

19 Y se le informó a Saúl diciendo: He aquí, David está en Naiot, en Ramá.

20 Saúl envió mensajeros para llevarse a David, pero cuando vieron al grupo de los profetas profetizando, y a Samuel de pie presidiéndolos, el Espíritu de Dios vino sobre los mensajeros de Saúl, y ellos también profetizaron.

21 Cuando se lo dijeron a Saúl, envió otros mensajeros, y también ellos profetizaron. Y por tercera vez Saúl envió mensajeros, y ellos también profetizaron.

22 Entonces él mismo fue a Ramá, y llegó hasta el pozo grande que está en Secú; y preguntó, diciendo: ¿Dónde están Samuel y David? Y alguien dijo: He aquí, están en Naiot en Ramá.

23 Y él prosiguió hasta Naiot en Ramá; y vino también el Espíritu de Dios sobre él, e iba profetizando continuamente hasta llegar a Naiot en Ramá.

24 Se quitó además la ropa, también profetizó delante de Samuel, y estuvo echado desnudo todo aquel día y toda la noche. Por lo que suele decirse: ¿También está Saúl entre los profetas?

The Message Bible MSG

1 Saul called his son Jonathan together with his servants and ordered them to kill David. But because Jonathan treasured David,

2 he went and warned him: "My father is looking for a way to kill you. Here's what you are to do. Tomorrow morning, hide and stay hidden.

3 I'll go out with my father into the field where you are hiding. I'll talk about you with my father and we'll see what he says. Then I'll report back to you."

4 Jonathan brought up David with his father, speaking well of him. "Please," he said to his father, "don't attack David. He hasn't wronged you, has he? And just look at all the good he has done!

5 He put his life on the line when he killed the Philistine. What a great victory God gave Israel that day! You were there. You saw it and were on your feet applauding with everyone else. So why would you even think of sinning against an innocent person, killing David for no reason whatever?"

6 Saul listened to Jonathan and said, "You're right. As God lives, David lives. He will not be killed."

7 Jonathan sent for David and reported to him everything that was said. Then he brought David back to Saul and everything was as it was before.

8 War broke out again and David went out to fight Philistines. He beat them badly, and they ran for their lives.

9 But then a black mood from God settled over Saul and took control of him. He was sitting at home, his spear in his hand, while David was playing music.

10 Suddenly, Saul tried to skewer David with his spear, but David ducked. The spear stuck in the wall and David got away. It was night.

11 Saul sent men to David's house to stake it out and then, first thing in the morning, to kill him. But Michal, David's wife, told him what was going on. "Quickly now - make your escape tonight. If not, you'll be dead by morning!"

12 She let him out of a window, and he made his escape.

13 Then Michal took a dummy god and put it in the bed, placed a wig of goat's hair on its head, and threw a quilt over it.

14 When Saul's men arrived to get David, she said, "He's sick in bed."

15 Saul sent his men back, ordering them, "Bring him, bed and all, so I can kill him."

16 When the men entered the room, all they found in the bed was the dummy god with its goat-hair wig!

17 Saul stormed at Michal: "How could you play tricks on me like this? You sided with my enemy, and now he's gotten away!" Michal said, "He threatened me. He said, 'Help me out of here or I'll kill you.'"

18 David made good his escape and went to Samuel at Ramah and told him everything Saul had done to him. Then he and Samuel withdrew to the privacy of Naioth.

19 Saul was told, "David's at Naioth in Ramah."

20 He immediately sent his men to capture him. They saw a band of prophets prophesying with Samuel presiding over them. Before they knew it, the Spirit of God was on them, too, and they were ranting and raving right along with the prophets!

21 That was reported back to Saul, and he dispatched more men. They, too, were soon prophesying. So Saul tried a third time - a third set of men - and they ended up mindlessly raving as well!

22 Fed up, Saul went to Ramah himself. He came to the big cistern at Secu and inquired, "Where are Samuel and David?" A bystander said, "Over at Naioth in Ramah."

23 As he headed out for Naioth in Ramah, the Spirit of God was on him, too. All the way to Naioth he was caught up in a babbling trance!

24 He ripped off his clothes and lay there rambling gibberish before Samuel for a day and a night, stretched out naked. People are still talking about it: "Saul among the prophets! Who would have guessed?"
