1 Y cuando Saúl volvió de los filisteos, le dieron aviso diciendo: He aquí que David <em>está</em> en el desierto de En-gadi

2 Y tomando Saúl tres mil hombres escogidos de todo Israel, fue en busca de David y de los suyos, por las cumbres de los peñascos de las cabras monteses

3 Y cuando llegó a una majada de ovejas en el camino, donde había una cueva, entró Saúl en ella a hacer sus necesidades; y David y los suyos estaban sentados a los lados de la cueva

4 Entonces los de David le dijeron: He aquí el día que te ha dicho el SEÑOR: He aquí que <em>yo</em> entrego tu enemigo en tus manos, y harás con él como te pareciere. Y se levantó David, y calladamente cortó la orilla de la ropa de Saúl

5 Después de lo cual el corazón de David le hirió, porque había cortado la orilla de <em>la ropa de</em> Saúl

6 Y dijo a los suyos: El SEÑOR me guarde de hacer tal cosa contra mi señor, <em>el</em> ungido del SEÑOR, que yo extienda mi mano contra él; porque es ungido del SEÑOR

7 Así quebrantó David a los suyos con palabras, y no les permitió que se levantaran contra Saúl. Y Saúl, saliendo de la cueva, se fue su camino

8 También David se levantó después, y saliendo de la cueva dio voces a las espaldas de Saúl, diciendo: ¡Mi señor el rey! Y cuando Saúl miró atrás, David inclinó su rostro a tierra, y adoró

9 Y dijo David a Saúl: ¿Por qué oyes las palabras de los que dicen: Mira que David procura tu mal

10 He aquí han visto hoy tus ojos cómo el SEÑOR te ha puesto hoy en mis manos en <em>esta</em> cueva; y dijeron que te matara, mas te perdoné, porque dije: No extenderé mi mano contra mi señor, porque ungido <em>es</em> del SEÑOR

11 Y mira, padre mío, mira aún la orilla de tu ropa en mi mano; porque <em>yo</em> corté la orilla de tu manto, y no te maté. Conoce, pues, y ve que no hay mal ni traición en mi mano, ni he pecado contra ti; <em>con todo</em>, tú andas a caza de mi vida para quitármela

12 Juzgue el SEÑOR entre mí y ti, y véngueme de ti el SEÑOR; pero mi mano no será contra ti

13 Como dice el proverbio del antiguo: De los impíos saldrá la impiedad; así que mi mano no será contra ti

14 ¿Tras quién ha salido el rey de Israel? ¿A quién persigues? ¿A un perro muerto? ¿A una pulga

15 El SEÑOR, pues, será juez, y él juzgará entre mí y ti. El vea, y pleitee mi pleito, y me defienda de tu mano

16 Y aconteció que, cuando David acabó de decir estas palabras a Saúl, Saúl dijo: ¿No es esta la voz tuya, hijo mío David? Y alzando Saúl su voz lloró

17 Y dijo a David: Más justo <em>eres</em> tú que yo, que me has pagado con bien, habiéndote yo pagado con mal

18 Tú has mostrado hoy que has hecho conmigo bien; pues no me has dado muerte, habiéndome el SEÑOR puesto en tus manos

19 Porque ¿quién hallará a su enemigo, y lo dejará ir sano y salvo? El SEÑOR te pague con bien por lo que en este día has hecho conmigo

20 Y ahora, como yo entiendo que tú has de reinar, y que el reino de Israel ha de ser en tu mano firme y estable

21 júrame, pues, ahora por el SEÑOR, que no talarás mi simiente después de mí, ni raerás mi nombre de la casa de mi padre

22 Entonces David juró a Saúl. Y se fue Saúl a su casa, y David y los suyos se subieron a su fuerte

New International Version NIV

1 After Saul returned from pursuing the Philistines, he was told, “David is in the Desert of En Gedi.”

2 So Saul took three thousand able young men from all Israel and set out to look for David and his men near the Crags of the Wild Goats.

3 He came to the sheep pens along the way; a cave was there, and Saul went in to relieve himself. David and his men were far back in the cave.

4 The men said, “This is the day the LORD spoke of when he said to you, ‘I will give your enemy into your hands for you to deal with as you wish.’ ” Then David crept up unnoticed and cut off a corner of Saul’s robe.

5 Afterward, David was conscience-stricken for having cut off a corner of his robe.

6 He said to his men, “The LORD forbid that I should do such a thing to my master, the LORD’s anointed, or lay my hand on him; for he is the anointed of the LORD.”

7 With these words David sharply rebuked his men and did not allow them to attack Saul. And Saul left the cave and went his way.

8 Then David went out of the cave and called out to Saul, “My lord the king!” When Saul looked behind him, David bowed down and prostrated himself with his face to the ground.

9 He said to Saul, “Why do you listen when men say, ‘David is bent on harming you’?

10 This day you have seen with your own eyes how the LORD delivered you into my hands in the cave. Some urged me to kill you, but I spared you; I said, ‘I will not lay my hand on my lord, because he is the LORD’s anointed.’

11 See, my father, look at this piece of your robe in my hand! I cut off the corner of your robe but did not kill you. See that there is nothing in my hand to indicate that I am guilty of wrongdoing or rebellion. I have not wronged you, but you are hunting me down to take my life.

12 May the LORD judge between you and me. And may the LORD avenge the wrongs you have done to me, but my hand will not touch you.

13 As the old saying goes, ‘From evildoers come evil deeds,’ so my hand will not touch you.

14 “Against whom has the king of Israel come out? Who are you pursuing? A dead dog? A flea?

15 May the LORD be our judge and decide between us. May he consider my cause and uphold it; may he vindicate me by delivering me from your hand.”

16 When David finished saying this, Saul asked, “Is that your voice, David my son?” And he wept aloud.

17 “You are more righteous than I,” he said. “You have treated me well, but I have treated you badly.

18 You have just now told me about the good you did to me; the LORD delivered me into your hands, but you did not kill me.

19 When a man finds his enemy, does he let him get away unharmed? May the LORD reward you well for the way you treated me today.

20 I know that you will surely be king and that the kingdom of Israel will be established in your hands.

21 Now swear to me by the LORD that you will not kill off my descendants or wipe out my name from my father’s family.”

22 So David gave his oath to Saul. Then Saul returned home, but David and his men went up to the stronghold.
