1 Samuel 25

1 Murió Samuel, y se reunió todo Israel y lo lloraron, y lo sepultaron en su casa en Ramá. Después David se levantó y descendió al desierto de Parán.

2 Y había un hombre en Maón que tenía sus bienes en Carmel; el hombre era muy rico y tenía tres mil ovejas y mil cabras; y estaba en Carmel trasquilando sus ovejas.

3 El hombre se llamaba Nabal, y su mujer se llamaba Abigail. Y la mujer era inteligente y de hermosa apariencia, pero el hombre era áspero y malo en sus tratos, y era calebita.

4 Y oyó David en el desierto que Nabal estaba trasquilando sus ovejas.

5 Entonces David envió diez jóvenes, y les dijo: Subid a Carmel, visitad a Nabal y saludadle en mi nombre;

6 y le diréis así: "Ten una larga vida, paz para ti, paz para tu casa y paz para todo lo que tienes.

7 "He oído que tienes esquiladores; ahora bien, tus pastores han estado con nosotros, y no los hemos maltratado, ni les ha faltado nada todos los días que estuvieron en Carmel.

8 "Pregunta a tus mozos, y ellos te lo dirán. Por tanto, permite que mis mozos hallen gracia ante tus ojos, porque hemos llegado en un día de fiesta. Te ruego que de lo que tengas a mano, des a tus siervos y a tu hijo David."

9 Cuando llegaron los jóvenes de David, dijeron a Nabal todas estas palabras en nombre de David; entonces esperaron.

10 Pero Nabal respondió a los siervos de David, y dijo: ¿Quién es David y quién es el hijo de Isaí? Hay muchos siervos hoy día que huyen de su señor.

11 ¿He de tomar mi pan, mi agua y la carne que he preparado para mis esquiladores, y he de dárselos a hombres cuyo origen no conozco?

12 Entonces los jóvenes de David se volvieron por su camino, y regresaron; y llegaron y le comunicaron todas estas palabras.

13 Y David dijo a sus hombres: Cíñase cada uno su espada. Y cada hombre se ciñó su espada. David también se ciñó su espada, y unos cuatrocientos hombres subieron tras David, mientras que doscientos se quedaron con el bagaje.

14 Mas uno de los mozos avisó a Abigail, mujer de Nabal, diciendo: He aquí, David envió mensajeros desde el desierto a saludar a nuestro señor, y él los desdeñó.

15 Sin embargo, los hombres fueron muy buenos con nosotros; no nos maltrataron ni nos faltó nada cuando andábamos con ellos, mientras estábamos en el campo.

16 Como muro fueron para nosotros tanto de noche como de día, todo el tiempo que estuvimos con ellos apacentando las ovejas.

17 Ahora pues, reflexiona y mira lo que has de hacer, porque el mal ya está determinado contra nuestro señor y contra toda su casa, y él es un hombre tan indigno que nadie puede hablarle.

18 Entonces Abigail se dio prisa y tomó doscientos panes, dos odres de vino, cinco ovejas ya preparadas, cinco medidas de grano tostado, cien racimos de uvas pasas, y doscientas tortas de higos, y los puso sobre asnos.

19 Y dijo a sus mozos: Id delante de mí; he aquí, yo os seguiré. Pero nada dijo a su marido Nabal.

20 Y sucedió que cuando ella cabalgaba en su asno y descendía por la parte encubierta del monte, he aquí que David y sus hombres venían bajando hacia ella, y se encontró con ellos.

21 Y David había dicho: Ciertamente, en vano he guardado todo lo que este hombre tiene en el desierto, de modo que nada se perdió de todo lo suyo; y él me ha devuelto mal por bien.

22 Así haga Dios a los enemigos de David, y aun más, si al llegar la mañana he dejado tan sólo un varón de los suyos.

23 Cuando Abigail vio a David se dio prisa y bajó de su asno, y cayendo sobre su rostro delante de David, se postró en tierra.

24 Y se echó a sus pies y dijo: Señor mío, sólo sobre mí sea la culpa. Te ruego que permitas que tu sierva te hable, y que escuches las palabras de tu sierva.

25 Ruego a mi señor que no haga caso a este hombre indigno, Nabal, porque conforme a su nombre, así es. Se llama Nabal, y la insensatez está con él; mas yo tu sierva no vi a los jóvenes que tú, mi señor, enviaste.

26 Ahora pues, señor mío, vive el SEÑOR y vive tu alma; puesto que el SEÑOR te ha impedido derramar sangre y vengarte por tu propia mano, sean pues como Nabal tus enemigos y los que buscan el mal contra mi señor.

27 Y ahora permite que este presente que tu sierva ha traído para mi señor se dé a los jóvenes que acompañan a mi señor.

28 Te ruego que perdones la ofensa de tu sierva, porque el SEÑOR ciertamente establecerá una casa duradera para mi señor, pues mi señor pelea las batallas del SEÑOR, y el mal no se hallará en ti en todos tus días.

29 Y si alguno se levanta para perseguirte y buscar tu vida, entonces la vida de mi señor será ligada en el haz de los que viven con el SEÑOR tu Dios; pero El lanzará la vida de tus enemigos como de en medio de una honda.

30 Y sucederá que cuando el SEÑOR haga por mi señor conforme a todo el bien que El ha hablado de ti, y te ponga por príncipe sobre Israel,

31 esto no causará pesar ni remordimiento a mi señor, tanto por haber derramado sangre sin causa como por haberse vengado mi señor. Cuando el SEÑOR haya hecho bien a mi señor, entonces acuérdate de tu sierva.

32 Entonces David dijo a Abigail: Bendito sea el SEÑOR, Dios de Israel, que te envió hoy a encontrarme,

33 bendito sea tu razonamiento, y bendita seas tú, que me has impedido hoy derramar sangre y vengarme por mi propia mano.

34 Sin embargo, vive el SEÑOR, Dios de Israel, que me ha impedido hacerte mal, que si tú no hubieras venido pronto a encontrarme, ciertamente, para la luz del alba, no le hubiera quedado a Nabal ni un varón.

35 Recibió David de su mano lo que ella había traído y le dijo: Sube en paz a tu casa. Mira, te he escuchado y te he concedido tu petición.

36 Entonces Abigail regresó a Nabal, y he aquí, él tenía un banquete en su casa, como el banquete de un rey. Y el corazón de Nabal estaba alegre, pues estaba muy ebrio, por lo cual ella no le comunicó nada hasta el amanecer.

37 Pero sucedió que por la mañana, cuando se le pasó el vino a Nabal, su mujer le contó estas cosas, y su corazón se quedó como muerto dentro de él, y se puso como una piedra.

38 Y unos diez días después, sucedió que el SEÑOR hirió a Nabal, y murió.

39 Cuando David supo que Nabal había muerto, dijo: Bendito sea el SEÑOR, que ha defendido la causa de mi afrenta de manos de Nabal, y ha preservado a su siervo del mal. El SEÑOR también ha devuelto la maldad de Nabal sobre su propia cabeza. Entonces David envió a hablar con Abigail, para tomarla para sí por mujer.

40 Y los siervos de David fueron a casa de Abigail en Carmel, y le hablaron diciendo: David nos ha enviado a ti, para tomarte para sí por mujer.

41 Y ella se levantó y postrándose rostro en tierra, dijo: He aquí, vuestra sierva es una criada para lavar los pies de los siervos de mi señor.

42 Abigail se levantó apresuradamente, montó en un asno, y con sus cinco doncellas que la atendían siguió a los mensajeros de David, y fue su mujer.

43 David había tomado también a Ahinoam de Jezreel, y ambas fueron mujeres suyas.

44 Pues Saúl había dado a su hija Mical, mujer de David, a Palti, hijo de Lais, que era de Galim.

The Message Bible MSG

1 Samuel died. The whole country came to his funeral. Everyone grieved over his death, and he was buried in his hometown of Ramah. Meanwhile, David moved again, this time to the wilderness of Maon.

2 There was a certain man in Maon who carried on his business in the region of Carmel. He was very prosperous - three thousand sheep and a thousand goats, and it was sheep-shearing time in Carmel.

3 The man's name was Nabal (Fool), a Calebite, and his wife's name was Abigail. The woman was intelligent and good-looking, the man brutish and mean.

4 David, out in the backcountry, heard that Nabal was shearing his sheep

5 and sent ten of his young men off with these instructions: "Go to Carmel and approach Nabal. Greet him in my name, 'Peace!

6 Life and peace to you. Peace to your household, peace to everyone here!

7 I heard that it's sheep-shearing time. Here's the point: When your shepherds were camped near us we didn't take advantage of them. They didn't lose a thing all the time they were with us in Carmel.

8 Ask your young men - they'll tell you. What I'm asking is that you be generous with my men - share the feast! Give whatever your heart tells you to your servants and to me, David your son.'"

9 David's young men went and delivered his message word for word to Nabal. Nabal tore into them,

10 "Who is this David? Who is this son of Jesse? The country is full of runaway servants these days.

11 Do you think I'm going to take good bread and wine and meat freshly butchered for my sheepshearers and give it to men I've never laid eyes on? Who knows where they've come from?"

12 David's men got out of there and went back and told David what he had said.

13 David said, "Strap on your swords!" They all strapped on their swords, David and his men, and set out, four hundred of them. Two hundred stayed behind to guard the camp.

14 Meanwhile, one of the young shepherds told Abigail, Nabal's wife, what had happened: "David sent messengers from the backcountry to salute our master, but he tore into them with insults.

15 Yet these men treated us very well. They took nothing from us and didn't take advantage of us all the time we were in the fields.

16 They formed a wall around us, protecting us day and night all the time we were out tending the sheep.

17 Do something quickly because big trouble is ahead for our master and all of us. Nobody can talk to him. He's impossible - a real brute!"

18 Abigail flew into action. She took two hundred loaves of bread, two skins of wine, five sheep dressed out and ready for cooking, a bushel of roasted grain, a hundred raisin cakes, and two hundred fig cakes, and she had it all loaded on some donkeys.

19 Then she said to her young servants, "Go ahead and pave the way for me. I'm right behind you." But she said nothing to her husband Nabal.

20 As she was riding her donkey, descending into a ravine, David and his men were descending from the other end, so they met there on the road.

21 David had just said, "That sure was a waste, guarding everything this man had out in the wild so that nothing he had was lost - and now he rewards me with insults. A real slap in the face!

22 May God do his worst to me if Nabal and every cur in his misbegotten brood isn't dead meat by morning!"

23 As soon as Abigail saw David, she got off her donkey and fell on her knees at his feet, her face to the ground in homage,

24 saying, "My master, let me take the blame! Let me speak to you. Listen to what I have to say.

25 Don't dwell on what that brute Nabal did. He acts out the meaning of his name: Nabal, Fool. Foolishness oozes from him.

26 And now, my master, as God lives and as you live, God has kept you from this avenging murder - and may your enemies, all who seek my master's harm, end up like Nabal!

27 Now take this gift that I, your servant girl, have brought to my master, and give it to the young men who follow in the steps of my master.

28 "Forgive my presumption! But God is at work in my master, developing a rule solid and dependable. My master fights God's battles! As long as you live no evil will stick to you.

29 If anyone stands in your way, if anyone tries to get you out of the way, Know this: Your God-honored life is tightly bound in the bundle of God-protected life; But the lives of your enemies will be hurled aside as a stone is thrown from a sling.

30 "When God completes all the goodness he has promised my master and sets you up as prince over Israel,

31 my master will not have this dead weight in his heart, the guilt of an avenging murder. And when God has worked things for good for my master, remember me."

32 And David said, "Blessed be God, the God of Israel. He sent you to meet me!

33 And blessed be your good sense! Bless you for keeping me from murder and taking charge of looking out for me.

34 A close call! As God lives, the God of Israel who kept me from hurting you, if you had not come as quickly as you did, stopping me in my tracks, by morning there would have been nothing left of Nabal but dead meat."

35 Then David accepted the gift she brought him and said, "Return home in peace. I've heard what you've said and I'll do what you've asked."

36 When Abigail got home she found Nabal presiding over a huge banquet. He was in high spirits - and very, very drunk. So she didn't tell him anything of what she'd done until morning.

37 But in the morning, after Nabal had sobered up, she told him the whole story. Right then and there he had a heart attack and fell into a coma.

38 About ten days later God finished him off and he died.

39 When David heard that Nabal was dead he said, "Blessed be God who has stood up for me against Nabal's insults, kept me from an evil act, and let Nabal's evil boomerang back on him."

40 David's servants went to Abigail at Carmel with the message, "David sent us to bring you to marry him."

41 She got up, and then bowed down, face to the ground, saying, "I'm your servant, ready to do anything you want. I'll even wash the feet of my master's servants!"

42 Abigail didn't linger. She got on her donkey and, with her five maids in attendance, went with the messengers to David and became his wife.

43 David also married Ahinoam of Jezreel. Both women were his wives.

44 Saul had married off David's wife Michal to Palti (Paltiel) son of Laish, who was from Gallim.
