1 Entonces David se dijo: Ahora bien, voy a perecer algún día por la mano de Saúl. Lo mejor para mí es huir a la tierra de los filisteos. Saúl se cansará, y no me buscará más en todo el territorio de Israel, y escaparé de su mano.

David thought to himself, "Sooner or later, Saul's going to get me. The best thing I can do is escape to Philistine country. Saul will count me a lost cause and quit hunting me down in every nook and cranny of Israel. I'll be out of his reach for good."
2 Se levantó, pues, David y se pasó con los seiscientos hombres que estaban con él a Aquis, hijo de Maoc, rey de Gat.

So David left; he and his six hundred men went to Achish son of Maoch, king of Gath.
3 Y moró David con Aquis en Gat, él y sus hombres, cada cual con los de su casa; David con sus dos mujeres Ahinoam jezreelita, y Abigail la de Carmel, viuda de Nabal.

They moved in and settled down in Gath, with Achish. Each man brought his household; David brought his two wives, Ahinoam of Jezreel and Abigail, widow of Nabal of Carmel.
4 Y le dieron la noticia a Saúl que David había huido a Gat, y no lo buscó más.

When Saul was told that David had escaped to Gath, he called off the hunt.
5 Y David dijo a Aquis: Si he hallado ahora gracia ante tus ojos, que me den un lugar en una de las aldeas en el campo para que habite allí; pues, ¿por qué ha de morar tu siervo contigo en la ciudad real?

Then David said to Achish, "If it's agreeable to you, assign me a place in one of the rural villages. It doesn't seem right that I, your mere servant, should be taking up space in the royal city."
6 Aquis le dio Siclag aquel día; por eso Siclag ha pertenecido a los reyes de Judá hasta hoy.

So Achish assigned him Ziklag. (This is how Ziklag got to be what it is now, a city of the kings of Judah.)
7 El número de los días que David habitó en el territorio de los filisteos fue un año y cuatro meses.

David lived in Philistine country a year and four months.
8 Y subieron David y sus hombres e hicieron incursiones contra los gesuritas, los gezritas y los amalecitas; porque ellos eran los habitantes de la tierra desde tiempos antiguos, según se va a Shur, hasta la tierra de Egipto.

From time to time David and his men raided the Geshurites, the Girzites, and the Amalekites - these people were longtime inhabitants of the land stretching toward Shur and on to Egypt.
9 David atacaba el territorio, y no dejaba con vida hombre ni mujer, y se llevaba las ovejas, el ganado, los asnos, los camellos y la ropa. Entonces regresaba y venía a Aquis.

When David raided an area he left no one alive, neither man nor woman, but took everything else: sheep, cattle, donkeys, camels, clothing - the works. Then he'd return to Achish.
10 Y Aquis decía: ¿Dónde atacasteis hoy? Y David respondía: Contra el Neguev de Judá, contra el Neguev de Jerameel y contra el Neguev de los ceneos.

Achish would ask, "And whom did you raid today?"
11 David no dejaba con vida hombre ni mujer para traer a Gat, diciendo: No sea que nos descubran, diciendo: "Así ha hecho David, y así ha sido su costumbre todo el tiempo que ha morado en el territorio de los filisteos."

He never left a single person alive lest one show up in Gath and report what David had really been doing. This is the way David operated all the time he lived in Philistine country.
12 Aquis confiaba en David diciendo: En verdad que se ha hecho odioso a su pueblo Israel y será mi servidor para siempre.

Achish came to trust David completely. He thought, "He's made himself so repugnant to his people that he'll be in my camp forever."
