1 Reunieron los filisteos todos sus ejércitos en Afec, mientras los israelitas acamparon junto a la fuente que está en Jezreel.

2 Y los príncipes de los filisteos iban avanzando por cientos y por miles, y David y sus hombres marchaban en la retaguardia con Aquis.

3 Entonces los jefes de los filisteos dijeron: ¿Qué hacen aquí estos hebreos? Y Aquis dijo a los jefes de los filisteos: ¿No es éste David, el siervo de Saúl, rey de Israel, que ha estado conmigo estos días, o más bien estos años, y no he hallado falta en él desde el día en que se pasó a mí hasta hoy?

4 Pero los jefes de los filisteos se enojaron contra él, y le dijeron: Haz volver a ese hombre y que se vuelva al lugar que le asignaste, y no le permitas que descienda a la batalla con nosotros, no sea que en la batalla se convierta en nuestro adversario. Pues, ¿con qué podría hacerse él aceptable a su señor? ¿No sería con las cabezas de estos hombres?

5 ¿No es éste David, de quien cantaban en las danzas, diciendo: "Saúl mató a sus miles, y David a sus diez miles"?

6 Aquis llamó a David y le dijo: Vive el SEÑOR que tú has sido recto; tu salir y tu entrar en el ejército conmigo son agradables a mis ojos, pues no he hallado mal en ti desde el día en que te pasaste a mí hasta hoy. Sin embargo, no eres agradable a los ojos de los príncipes.

7 Ahora pues, vuelve y vete en paz, para que no desagrades a los príncipes de los filisteos.

8 Y David dijo a Aquis: Pero, ¿qué he hecho? ¿Y qué has hallado en tu siervo desde el día en que estuve delante de ti hasta hoy, para que yo no vaya y pelee contra los enemigos de mi señor el rey?

9 Respondió Aquis y dijo a David: Yo sé que eres grato a mis ojos como un ángel de Dios; sin embargo, los jefes de los filisteos han dicho: "No debe subir con nosotros a la batalla."

10 Por tanto, levántate muy de mañana con los siervos de tu señor que han venido contigo, y luego que os hayáis levantado temprano y haya claridad, partid.

11 David, pues, se levantó temprano, él y sus hombres, para salir por la mañana y regresar a la tierra de los filisteos. Y los filisteos subieron a Jezreel.

1 The Philistines mustered all their troops at Aphek. Meanwhile Israel had made camp at the spring at Jezreel.

2 As the Philistine warlords marched forward by regiments and divisions, David and his men were bringing up the rear with Achish.

3 The Philistine officers said, "What business do these Hebrews have being here?" Achish answered the officers, "Don't you recognize David, ex-servant of King Saul of Israel? He's been with me a long time. I've found nothing to be suspicious of, nothing to complain about, from the day he defected from Saul until now."

4 Angry with Achish, the Philistine officers said, "Send this man back to where he came from. Let him stick to his normal duties. He's not going into battle with us. He'd switch sides in the middle of the fight! What better chance to get back in favor with his master than by stabbing us in the back!

5 Isn't this the same David they celebrate at their parties, singing, Saul kills by the thousand, David by the ten thousand!"

6 So Achish had to send for David and tell him, "As God lives, you've been a trusty ally - excellent in all the ways you have worked with me, beyond reproach in the ways you have conducted yourself. But the warlords don't see it that way.

7 So it's best that you leave peacefully, now. It's not worth it, displeasing the Philistine warlords."

8 "But what have I done?" said David. "Have you had a single cause for complaint from the day I joined up with you until now? Why can't I fight against the enemies of my master the king?"

9 "I agree," said Achish. "You're a good man - as far as I'm concerned, God's angel! But the Philistine officers were emphatic: 'He's not to go with us into battle.'

10 So get an early start, you and the men who came with you. As soon as you have light enough to travel, go."

11 David rose early, he and his men, and by daybreak they were on their way back to Philistine country. The Philistines went on to Jezreel.
