1 Samuel 30

1 Y aconteció que cuando David y sus hombres llegaron a Siclag al tercer día, los amalecitas habían hecho una incursión en el Neguev y contra Siclag, y habían asolado a Siclag y la habían incendiado;

2 y se llevaron cautivas las mujeres y a todos los que estaban en ella, grandes y pequeños, sin dar muerte a nadie; se los llevaron y siguieron su camino.

3 Cuando llegaron David y sus hombres a la ciudad, he aquí que había sido quemada, y que sus mujeres, sus hijos y sus hijas habían sido llevados cautivos.

4 Entonces David y la gente que estaba con él alzaron su voz y lloraron, hasta que no les quedaron fuerzas para llorar.

5 Las dos mujeres de David, Ahinoam jezreelita y Abigail, la viuda de Nabal, el de Carmel, habían sido llevadas cautivas.

6 Y David estaba muy angustiado porque la gente hablaba de apedrearlo, pues todo el pueblo estaba amargado, cada uno a causa de sus hijos y de sus hijas. Mas David se fortaleció en el SEÑOR su Dios.

7 Entonces dijo David al sacerdote Abiatar, hijo de Ahimelec: Te ruego que me traigas el efod. Y Abiatar llevó el efod a David.

8 Y David consultó al SEÑOR, diciendo: ¿Perseguiré a esta banda? ¿Podré alcanzarlos? Y El le respondió: Persíguelos, porque de cierto los alcanzarás y sin duda rescatarás a todos.

9 Partió, pues, David, él y los seiscientos hombres que estaban con él, y llegaron hasta el torrente Besor, donde se quedaron algunos rezagados.

10 Pero David siguió adelante, él y cuatrocientos hombres, porque doscientos, que estaban demasiado fatigados para cruzar el torrente Besor, se quedaron atrás.

11 Y hallaron en el campo a un egipcio y se lo llevaron a David; le dieron pan y comió, y le dieron a beber agua.

12 También le dieron un pedazo de torta de higos y dos racimos de uvas pasas y comió, y su espíritu se reanimó; porque no había comido pan ni bebido agua en tres días y tres noches.

13 Y David le dijo: ¿De quién eres tú, y de dónde eres? Y él dijo: Soy un joven de Egipto, siervo de un amalecita; mi amo me dejó atrás cuando me enfermé hace tres días.

14 Hicimos una incursión contra el Neguev de los cereteos, contra el de Judá y contra el Neguev de Caleb, y pusimos fuego a Siclag.

15 Entonces David le dijo: ¿Me llevarás a esa banda? Y él respondió: Júrame por Dios que no me matarás ni me entregarás en manos de mi amo, y te llevaré a esa banda.

16 Cuando lo llevó, he aquí que estaban desparramados sobre toda aquella tierra, comiendo, bebiendo y bailando por el gran botín que habían tomado de la tierra de los filisteos y de la tierra de Judá.

17 Y los hirió David desde el anochecer hasta el atardecer del día siguiente, ninguno de ellos escapó, excepto cuatrocientos jóvenes que montaron en camellos y huyeron.

18 David recuperó todo lo que los amalecitas habían tomado, también rescató a sus dos mujeres.

19 Nada de lo que era de ellos les faltó, pequeño o grande, hijos o hijas, botín o cualquier cosa que habían tomado para sí; David lo recuperó todo.

20 David tomó también todas las ovejas y el ganado de los amalecitas, llevándolos delante de los otros ganados, y decían: Este es el botín de David.

21 Cuando David llegó a donde estaban los doscientos hombres que, demasiado fatigados para seguir a David, se habían quedado en el torrente Besor, éstos salieron al encuentro de David y del pueblo que estaba con él, y David se acercó al pueblo y los saludó.

22 Entonces todos los hombres malvados e indignos de entre los que habían ido con David respondieron, y dijeron: Porque no fueron con nosotros, no les daremos nada del botín que hemos recuperado, sino a cada hombre su mujer y sus hijos, para que se los lleven y se vayan.

23 Pero David dijo: No debéis hacer así, hermanos míos, con lo que nos ha dado el SEÑOR, quien nos ha guardado y ha entregado en nuestra mano la banda que vino contra nosotros.

24 ¿Y quién os escuchará sobre este asunto? Porque conforme a la parte del que desciende a la batalla, así será la parte del que queda con el bagaje; ellos recibirán lo mismo.

25 Y así ha sido desde aquel día en adelante, en que él lo estableció como estatuto y ordenanza para Israel hasta el día de hoy.

26 Cuando llegó David a Siclag, mandó parte del botín a los ancianos de Judá, sus amigos, diciendo: He aquí un presente para vosotros del botín de los enemigos del SEÑOR.

27 Y lo envió a los de Betel, a los de Ramot del Neguev, a los de Jatir,

28 a los de Aroer, a los de Sifmot, a los de Estemoa,

29 a los de Racal, a los de las ciudades de Jerameel, a los de las ciudades del ceneo,

30 a los de Horma, a los de Corasán, a los de Atac,

31 a los de Hebrón y a todos los lugares por donde David y sus hombres habían andado.

1 Three days later, David and his men arrived back in Ziklag. Amalekites had raided the Negev and Ziklag. They tore Ziklag to pieces and then burned it down.

2 They captured all the women, young and old. They didn't kill anyone, but drove them like a herd of cattle.

3 By the time David and his men entered the village, it had been burned to the ground, and their wives, sons, and daughters all taken prisoner.

4 David and his men burst out in loud wails - wept and wept until they were exhausted with weeping.

5 David's two wives, Ahinoam of Jezreel and Abigail widow of Nabal of Carmel, had been taken prisoner along with the rest.

6 And suddenly David was in even worse trouble. There was talk among the men, bitter over the loss of their families, of stoning him.

7 He ordered Abiathar the priest, son of Ahimelech, "Bring me the Ephod so I can consult God." Abiathar brought it to David.

8 Then David prayed to God, "Shall I go after these raiders? Can I catch them?" The answer came, "Go after them! Yes, you'll catch them! Yes, you'll make the rescue!"

9 David went, he and the six hundred men with him. They arrived at the Brook Besor, where some of them dropped out.

10 David and four hundred men kept up the pursuit, but two hundred of them were too fatigued to cross the Brook Besor, and stayed there.

11 Some who went on came across an Egyptian in a field and took him to David. They gave him bread and he ate. And he drank some water.

12 They gave him a piece of fig cake and a couple of raisin muffins. Life began to revive in him. He hadn't eaten or drunk a thing for three days and nights!

13 David said to him, "Who do you belong to? Where are you from?"

14 We had raided the Negev of the Kerethites, of Judah, and of Caleb. Ziklag we burned."

15 David asked him, "Can you take us to the raiders?" "Promise me by God," he said, "that you won't kill me or turn me over to my old master, and I'll take you straight to the raiders."

16 He led David to them. They were scattered all over the place, eating and drinking, gorging themselves on all the loot they had plundered from Philistia and Judah.

17 David pounced. He fought them from before sunrise until evening of the next day. None got away except for four hundred of the younger men who escaped by riding off on camels.

18 David rescued everything the Amalekites had taken. And he rescued his two wives!

19 Nothing and no one was missing - young or old, son or daughter, plunder or whatever. David recovered the whole lot.

20 He herded the sheep and cattle before them, and they all shouted, "David's plunder!"

21 Then David came to the two hundred who had been too tired to continue with him and had dropped out at the Brook Besor. They came out to welcome David and his band. As he came near he called out, "Success!"

22 But all the mean-spirited men who had marched with David, the rabble element, objected: "They didn't help in the rescue, they don't get any of the plunder we recovered. Each man can have his wife and children, but that's it. Take them and go!"

23 "Families don't do this sort of thing! Oh no, my brothers!" said David as he broke up the argument. "You can't act this way with what God gave us! God kept us safe. He handed over the raiders who attacked us.

24 Who would ever listen to this kind of talk? The share of the one who stays with the gear is the share of the one who fights - equal shares. Share and share alike!"

25 From that day on, David made that the rule in Israel - and it still is.

26 On returning to Ziklag, David sent portions of the plunder to the elders of Judah, his neighbors, with a note saying, "A gift from the plunder of God's enemies!"

27 He sent them to the elders in Bethel, Ramoth Negev, Jattir,

28 Aroer, Siphmoth, Eshtemoa,

29 Racal, Jerahmeelite cities, Kenite cities,

30 Hormah, Bor Ashan, Athach,

31 and Hebron, along with a number of other places David and his men went to from time to time.
