1 Los filisteos pelearon contra Israel y los hombres de Israel huyeron delante de los filisteos y cayeron muertos en el monte Gilboa.

The Philistines made war on Israel. The men of Israel were in full retreat from the Philistines, falling left and right, wounded on Mount Gilboa.
2 Los filisteos persiguieron muy de cerca a Saúl y a sus hijos, y mataron a Jonatán, a Abinadab y a Malquisúa, hijos de Saúl.

The Philistines caught up with Saul and his sons. They killed Jonathan, Abinadab, and Malki-Shua, Saul's sons.
3 Y arreció la batalla contra Saúl, los arqueros lo alcanzaron y fue gravemente herido por ellos.

The battle was hot and heavy around Saul. The archers got his range and wounded him badly.
4 Entonces Saúl dijo a su escudero: Saca tu espada y traspásame con ella, no sea que vengan estos incircuncisos y me traspasen y hagan burla de mí. Pero su escudero no quiso, porque tenía mucho miedo. Por lo cual Saúl tomó su espada y se echó sobre ella.

Saul said to his weapon bearer, "Draw your sword and put me out of my misery, lest these pagan pigs come and make a game out of killing me."
5 Al ver su escudero que Saúl había muerto, él también se echó sobre su espada y murió con él.

When the weapon bearer saw that Saul was dead, he too fell on his sword and died with him.
6 Así murió Saúl aquel día, junto con sus tres hijos, su escudero y todos sus hombres.

So Saul, his three sons, and his weapon bearer - the men closest to him - died together that day.
7 Cuando los hombres de Israel que estaban al otro lado del valle, con los que estaban más allá del Jordán, vieron que los hombres de Israel habían huido y que Saúl y sus hijos habían muerto, abandonaron las ciudades y huyeron; entonces vinieron los filisteos y habitaron en ellas.

When the Israelites in the valley opposite and those on the other side of the Jordan saw that their army was in full retreat and that Saul and his sons were dead, they left their cities and ran for their lives. The Philistines moved in and occupied the sites.
8 Y sucedió que al día siguiente, cuando vinieron los filisteos a despojar a los muertos, hallaron a Saúl y a sus tres hijos caídos en el monte Gilboa.

The next day, when the Philistines came to rob the dead, they found Saul and his three sons dead on Mount Gilboa.
9 Le cortaron la cabeza y lo despojaron de sus armas, y enviaron mensajeros por toda la tierra de los filisteos, para que llevaran las buenas nuevas a la casa de sus ídolos y al pueblo.

They cut off Saul's head and stripped off his armor. Then they spread the good news all through Philistine country in the shrines of their idols and among the people.

They displayed his armor in the shrine of the Ashtoreth. They nailed his corpse to the wall at Beth Shan.

The people of Jabesh Gilead heard what the Philistines had done to Saul.
12 se levantaron todos los hombres valientes, y caminando toda la noche, tomaron el cuerpo de Saúl y los cuerpos de sus hijos del muro de Bet-sán, y volviendo a Jabes, los quemaron allí.

Their valiant men sprang into action. They traveled all night, took the corpses of Saul and his three sons from the wall at Beth Shan, and carried them back to Jabesh and burned off the flesh.
13 Y tomando sus huesos, los enterraron debajo del tamarisco en Jabes, y ayunaron siete días.

They then buried the bones under the tamarisk tree in Jabesh and fasted in mourning for seven days.
