1 Los filisteos tomaron el arca de Dios y la llevaron de Eben-ezer a Asdod.

2 Entonces tomaron los filisteos el arca de Dios y la introdujeron en el templo de Dagón, y la pusieron junto a Dagón.

3 A la mañana siguiente, cuando los de Asdod se levantaron temprano, he aquí que Dagón había caído rostro en tierra delante del arca del SEÑOR. Y tomaron a Dagón y lo pusieron otra vez en su lugar.

4 Pero al levantarse temprano al día siguiente, he aquí que Dagón había caído rostro en tierra delante del arca del SEÑOR. Y la cabeza de Dagón y las dos palmas de sus manos estaban cortadas sobre el umbral; sólo el tronco le quedaba a Dagón.

5 Por tanto, hasta hoy, ni los sacerdotes de Dagón ni ninguno de los que entran en el templo de Dagón, pisan el umbral de Dagón en Asdod.

6 Y la mano del SEÑOR se hizo pesada sobre los de Asdod, y los desoló y los hirió con tumores, tanto a Asdod como a sus territorios.

7 Cuando los hombres de Asdod vieron lo que les sucedía, dijeron: El arca del Dios de Israel no debe quedar con nosotros, pues su mano es dura sobre nosotros y sobre Dagón nuestro dios.

8 Enviaron, pues, e hicieron venir a ellos a todos los príncipes de los filisteos, y dijeron: ¿Qué haremos con el arca del Dios de Israel? Y ellos respondieron: Que se traslade el arca del Dios de Israel a Gat. Y trasladaron el arca del Dios de Israel.

9 Y sucedió que cuando la habían trasladado, la mano del SEÑOR estuvo contra la ciudad causando gran confusión; e hirió a los hombres de la ciudad, desde el menor hasta el mayor, saliéndoles tumores.

10 Entonces enviaron el arca de Dios a Ecrón. Y sucedió que cuando el arca de Dios llegó a Ecrón, los ecronitas clamaron, diciendo: Han traído el arca del Dios de Israel hasta nosotros para matarnos a nosotros y a nuestro pueblo.

11 Enviaron, pues, y reunieron a todos los príncipes de los filisteos, y dijeron: Sacad de aquí el arca del Dios de Israel, y que vuelva a su sitio, para que no nos mate a nosotros y a nuestro pueblo. Porque había un pánico mortal por toda la ciudad; la mano de Dios se hizo muy pesada allí.

12 Y los hombres que no murieron fueron heridos con tumores, y el clamor de la ciudad subió hasta el cielo.

1 Once the Philistines had seized the Chest of God, they took it from Ebenezer to Ashdod,

2 brought it into the shrine of Dagon, and placed it alongside the idol of Dagon.

3 Next morning when the citizens of Ashdod got up, they were shocked to find Dagon toppled from his place, flat on his face before the Chest of God. They picked him up and put him back where he belonged.

4 First thing the next morning they found him again, toppled and flat on his face before the Chest of God. Dagon's head and arms were broken off, strewn across the entrance. Only his torso was in one piece.

5 (That's why even today, the priests of Dagon and visitors to the Dagon shrine in Ashdod avoid stepping on the threshold.)

6 God was hard on the citizens of Ashdod. He devastated them by hitting them with tumors. This happened in both the town and the surrounding neighborhoods. He let loose rats among them. Jumping from ships there, rats swarmed all over the city! And everyone was deathly afraid.

7 When the leaders of Ashdod saw what was going on, they decided, "The chest of the god of Israel has got to go. We can't handle this, and neither can our god Dagon."

8 They called together all the Philistine leaders and put it to them: "How can we get rid of the chest of the god of Israel?" The leaders agreed: "Move it to Gath." So they moved the Chest of the God of Israel to Gath.

9 But as soon as they moved it there, God came down hard on that city, too. It was mass hysteria! He hit them with tumors. Tumors broke out on everyone in town, young and old.

10 So they sent the Chest of God on to Ekron, but as the Chest was being brought into town, the people shouted in protest, "You'll kill us all by bringing in this Chest of the God of Israel!"

11 They called the Philistine leaders together and demanded, "Get it out of here, this Chest of the God of Israel. Send it back where it came from. We're threatened with mass death!" For everyone was scared to death when the Chest of God showed up. God was already coming down very hard on the place.

12 Those who didn't die were hit with tumors. All over the city cries of pain and lament filled the air.
