1 OR Nahas Ammonita salì, e pose campo sopra Iabes di Galaad; e tutti que’ di Iabes di Galaad dissero a Nahas: Fa’ patti con noi, e noi ti serviremo.

2 E Nahas Ammonita disse loro: Io farò patti con voi, con questo che io vi cavi a tutti l’occhio destro, e metta questo vituperio sopra tutto Israele.

3 E gli Anziani di Iabes gli dissero: Concedici tregua di sette giorni, acciocchè noi mandiamo messi per tutte le contrade d’Israele; e se niuno ci libera, noi usciremo fuori a te.

4 I messi adunque vennero in Ghibea di Saulle, e dissero quelle parole in presenza del popolo. E tutto il popolo alzò la voce e pianse.

5 Or ecco, Saulle se ne veniva da’ campi, dietro a’ suoi buoi, e disse: Che ha il popolo, ch’egli piange? E le parole di que’ di Iabes gli furono raccontate.

6 E lo Spirito del Signore si avventò sopra Saulle, quando egli udì quelle parole, ed egli si accese nell’ira grandemente.

7 E prese un paio di buoi, e li tagliò in pezzi, i quali egli mandò per tutte le contrade d’Israle, per certi messi, dicendo: Chiunque non uscirà dietro a Saulle, e dietro a Samuele, il simigliante si farà a’ suoi buoi. E lo spavento del Signore cadde sopra il popolo; e tutti uscirono fuori, come se non fossero stati che un uomo.

8 E Saulle fece la rassegna di loro in Bezec; e si trovarono trecentomila uomini de’ figliuoli d’Israele, e trentamila di que’ di Giuda.

9 Poi dissero a’ messi ch’erano venuti: Dite così a que’ di Iabes di Galaad: Domani, come il sole si riscalderà, voi sarete liberati. I messi adunque se ne ritornarono, e rapportarono la cosa a que’ di Iabes, i quali se ne rallegrarono.

10 E que’ di Iabes dissero agli Ammoniti: Domani noi usciremo fuori a voi, e voi ci farete interamente come e’ vi parrà.

11 E il giorno seguente Saulle dispose il popolo in tre schiere; e quelle entrarono dentro al campo in su la veglia della mattina, e percossero gli Ammoniti, finchè il dì fu riscaldato. E avvenne che coloro che scamparono furono dispersi qua e là, e non ne rimase di loro due insieme.

12 E il popolo disse a Samuele: Chi son coloro che hanno detto: Saulle regnerà egli sopra noi? dateci quegli uomini, e noi li faremo morire.

13 Ma Saulle disse: Ei non si farà morire alcuno in questo giorno; perciocchè oggi il Signore ha fatta liberazione in Israele.

14 E Samuele disse al popolo: Venite, andiamo in Ghilgal, e quivi rinnoviamo il reame.

15 E tutto il popolo andò in Ghilgal, e quivi costituirono re Saulle, davanti al Signore, in Ghilgal; quivi ancora, nel cospetto del Signore, sacrificarono sacrificii da render grazie. E Saulle, e tutti gli uomini d’Israele, si rallegrarono quivi grandemente.

1 About a month later King Nahash of Ammon led his army against the town of Jabesh in the territory of Gilead and besieged it. The men of Jabesh said to Nahash, "Make a treaty with us, and we will accept you as our ruler."

2 Nahash answered, "I will make a treaty with you on one condition: I will put out everyone's right eye and so bring disgrace on all Israel."

3 The leaders of Jabesh said, "Give us seven days to send messengers throughout the land of Israel. If no one will help us, then we will surrender to you."

4 The messengers arrived at Gibeah, where Saul lived, and when they told the news, the people started crying in despair.

5 Saul was just then coming in from the field with his oxen, and he asked, "What's wrong? Why is everyone crying?" They told him what the messengers from Jabesh had reported.

6 When Saul heard this, the spirit of God took control of him, and he became furious.

7 He took two oxen, cut them in pieces, and had messengers carry the pieces throughout the land of Israel with this warning: "Whoever does not follow Saul and Samuel into battle will have this done to his oxen!" The people of Israel were afraid of what the Lord might do, and all of them, without exception, came out together.

8 Saul gathered them at Bezek: there were 300,000 from Israel and 30,000 from Judah.

9 They said to the messengers from Jabesh, "Tell your people that before noon tomorrow they will be rescued." When the people of Jabesh received the message, they were overjoyed

10 and said to Nahash, "Tomorrow we will surrender to you, and you can do with us whatever you wish."

11 That night Saul divided his men into three groups, and at dawn the next day they rushed into the enemy camp and attacked the Ammonites. By noon they had slaughtered them. The survivors scattered, each man running off by himself.

12 Then the people of Israel said to Samuel, "Where are the people who said that Saul should not be our king? Hand them over to us, and we will kill them!"

13 But Saul said, "No one will be put to death today, for this is the day the Lord rescued Israel."

14 And Samuel said to them, "Let us all go to Gilgal and once more proclaim Saul as our king."

15 So they all went to Gilgal, and there at the holy place they proclaimed Saul king. They offered fellowship sacrifices, and Saul and all the people of Israel celebrated the event.
