1 Samuele 13

1 SAULLE avea regnato un anno, quando queste cose avvennero; e poi, dopo aver regnato due anni sopra Israele,

2 scelse tremila uomini d’Israele; de’ quali duemila stettero con lui in Micmas, e nel monte di Betel, e mille con Gionatan, in Ghibea di Beniamino; e rimandò il rimanente del popolo, ciascuno alle sue stanze.

3 E Gionatan percosse la guernigione de’ Filistei ch’era nel colle; e i Filistei l’intesero. E Saulle fece sonar la tromba per tutto il paese, dicendo: Odano gli Ebrei.

4 E tutto Israele udì dire: Saulle ha percossa la guernigione de’ Filistei, ed anche Israele è diventato abbominevole fra i Filistei. E il popolo fu adunato a grida in Ghilgal, per seguitare Saulle.

5 I Filistei si adunarono anch’essi per guerreggiare contro ad Israele, avendo trentamila carri, e seimila cavalieri, e della gente in moltitudine, come la rena che è in sul lito del mare. E salirono, e si accamparono in Micmas, verso l’Oriente di Bet-aven.

6 Ora gl’Israeliti, veggendosi distretti, perciocchè il popolo era oppressato, si nascosero nelle spelonche, e per li greppi de’ monti, e nelle rupi, e nelle rocche, e nelle grotte.

7 E gli altri Ebrei passarono di là dal Giordano al paese di Gad e di Galaad. E Saulle non si moveva di Ghilgal, e tutto il popolo che lo seguitava era impaurito.

8 Ed egli aspettò sette giorni, secondo il termine posto da Samuele; e Samuele non veniva in Ghilgal; laonde il popolo si dispergeva d’appresso a Saulle.

9 Allora Saulle disse: Adducetemi l’olocausto, e i sacrificii da render grazie. Ed egli offerse l’olocausto.

10 E, come egli forniva d’offerir l’olocausto, ecco, Samuele arrivò; e Saulle gli uscì incontro, per salutarlo.

11 Ma Samuele gli disse: Che hai fatto? E Saulle gli rispose: Perciocchè io vedeva che il popolo si dispergeva d’appresso a me, e che tu non venivi al termine posto de’ giorni, e che i Filistei erano adunati in Micmas, io dissi:

12 I Filistei verranno ora contro a me in Ghilgal, ed io non ho supplicato al Signore; laonde, dopo essermi rattenuto quant’ho potuto, io ho offerto l’olocausto.

13 Allora Samuele disse a Saulle: Tu hai follemente fatto, non avendo osservato il comandamento del Signore Iddio tuo, il quale egli ti avea dato; perciocchè il Signore avrebbe ora stabilito il tuo regno sopra Israele, in perpetuo.

14 Ma ora il tuo regno non sarà stabile; il Signore s’è cercato un uomo secondo il cuor suo, il quale egli ha ordinato per conduttore sopra il suo popolo; poichè tu non hai osservato quello che il Signore ti avea comandato.

15 Poi Samuele si levò, e salì da Ghilgal in Ghibea di Beniamino. E Saulle fece la rassegna della gente che si ritrovava con lui, ch’era d’intorno a seicent’uomini.

16 Or Saulle, e Gionatan suo figliuolo, e il popolo che si ritrovava con loro, se ne stavano in Ghibea di Beniamino; e i Filistei erano accampati in Micmas.

17 E del campo de’ Filistei uscì della gente in tre schiere, da fare il guasto; l’una delle quali si voltò al cammino di Ofra, traendo verso il paese di Saulle;

18 l’altra si voltò alla via di Bet-horon; e la terza si voltò alla via del confine del paese che riguarda su la valle di Seboim, verso il deserto.

19 Or non si trovava alcun fabbro in tutto il paese d’Israele; perciocchè i Filistei aveano detto: Provvediamo che gli Ebrei non facciano spade nè lance.

20 E tutto Israele scendeva a’ Filistei, per aguzzare, chi il suo vomero, chi la sua zappa, chi la sua scure, chi la sua vanga.

21 E si servivano di lime per le vanghe, e per le zappe, e per li tridenti, e per le scuri, e per acconciare fino ad un pungolo.

22 Laonde, al giorno della battaglia, avvenne che non si trovò nè spada, nè lancia, nelle mani d’alcuno del popolo ch’era con Saulle e con Gionatan; sol se ne trovò a Saulle, e a Gionatan, suo figliuolo.

23 Poi la guernigione de’ Filistei uscì fuori verso il passo di Micmas.

2 Saul picked three thousand men, keeping two thousand of them with him in Michmash and in the hill country of Bethel and sending one thousand with his son Jonathan to Gibeah, in the territory of the tribe of Benjamin. The rest of the men Saul sent home.

3 Jonathan killed the Philistine commander in Geba, and all the Philistines heard about it. Then Saul sent messengers to call the Hebrews to war by blowing a trumpet throughout the whole country.

4 All the Israelites were told that Saul had killed the Philistine commander and that the Philistines hated them. So the people answered the call to join Saul at Gilgal.

5 The Philistines assembled to fight the Israelites; they had thirty thousand war chariots, six thousand cavalry troops, and as many soldiers as there are grains of sand on the seashore. They went to Michmash, east of Bethaven, and camped there.

6 Then they launched a strong attack against the Israelites, putting them in a desperate situation. Some of the Israelites hid in caves and holes or among the rocks or in pits and wells;

7 others crossed the Jordan River into the territories of Gad and Gilead. Saul was still at Gilgal, and the people with him were trembling with fear.

8 He waited seven days for Samuel, as Samuel had instructed him to do, but Samuel still had not come to Gilgal. The people began to desert Saul,

9 so he said to them, "Bring me the burnt sacrifices and the fellowship sacrifices." He offered a burnt sacrifice,

10 and just as he was finishing, Samuel arrived. Saul went out to meet him and welcome him,

11 but Samuel said, "What have you done?" Saul answered, "The people were deserting me, and you had not come when you said you would; besides that, the Philistines are gathering at Michmash.

12 So I thought, "The Philistines are going to attack me here in Gilgal, and I have not tried to win the Lord's favor.' So I felt I had to offer a sacrifice."

13 "That was a foolish thing to do," Samuel answered. "You have not obeyed the command the Lord your God gave you. If you had obeyed, he would have let you and your descendants rule over Israel forever.

14 But now your rule will not continue. Because you have disobeyed him, the Lord will find the kind of man he wants and make him ruler of his people."

15 Samuel left Gilgal and went on his way. The rest of the people followed Saul as he went to join his soldiers. They went from Gilgal to Gibeah in the territory of Benjamin. Saul inspected his troops, about six hundred men.

16 Saul, his son Jonathan, and their men camped in Geba in the territory of Benjamin; the Philistine camp was at Michmash.

17 The Philistine soldiers went out on raids from their camp in three groups: one group went toward Ophrah in the territory of Shual,

18 another went toward Beth Horon, and the other one went to the border overlooking Zeboim Valley and the wilderness.

19 There were no blacksmiths in Israel because the Philistines were determined to keep the Hebrews from making swords and spears

20 (The Israelites had to go to the Philistines to get their plows, hoes, axes, and sickles sharpened;

21 the charge was one small coin for sharpening axes and for fixing goads, and two coins for sharpening plows or hoes.)

22 And so on the day of battle none of the Israelite soldiers except Saul and his son Jonathan had swords or spears.

23 The Philistines sent a group of soldiers to defend Michmash Pass.
