1 OR Samuele disse a Saulle: Il Signore mi ha mandato per ungerti per re sopra il suo popolo, sopra Israele; ora dunque ascolta la voce delle parole del Signore.

2 Così dice il Signore degli eserciti: Io mi son rammemorato ciò che Amalec fece ad Israele, come egli se gli oppose tra via, quando egli salì fuor di Egitto.

3 Ora va’, e percuoti Amalec, e distruggete al modo dell’interdetto tutto ciò che è suo; e non risparmiarlo; anzi fa’ morire uomini e donne, fanciulli e bambini di poppa, buoi e pecore, cammelli ed asini.

4 Saulle adunque raunò il popolo, e ne fece la rassegna in Telaim, in numero di dugentomila uomini a piè, e di diecimila di Giuda.

5 E Saulle venne fino alla città di Amalec, e pose agguati nella valle.

6 E Saulle disse a’ Chenei: Andate, partitevi, scendete del mezzo degli Amalechiti; che talora io non vi distrugga con loro; avendo pur voi usata benignità inverso tutti i figliuoli d’Israele, quando salirono fuor di Egitto. I Chenei adunque si partirono di mezzo gli Amalechiti.

7 E Saulle percosse gli Amalechiti da Havila fino a Sur, che è a fronte all’Egitto.

8 E prese vivo Agag, re degli Amalechiti; ma distrusse tutto il popolo al modo dell’interdetto, mettendolo a fil di spada.

9 E Saulle, e il popolo, risparmiarono Agag, e il meglio delle pecore, e i buoi appaiati, e i montoni, e tutto ciò ch’era buono; e non vollero distruggere queste cose; ben distrussero ogni cosa vile e cattiva.

10 Allora la parola del Signore fu indirizzata a Samuele, dicendo:

11 Io mi pento d’aver costituito re Saulle; perciocchè egli si è rivolto indietro da me, e non ha messe ad esecuzione le mie parole. E Samuele ne fu molto cruccioso, e gridò al Signore tutta quella notte.

12 Poi Samuele si levò la mattina, per andare incontro a Saulle. Ed egli fu rapportato e detto a Samuele: Saulle è venuto in Carmel; ed ecco, egli si ha rizzato un trofeo; poi se n’è ritornato, ed è passato oltre, ed è disceso in Ghilgal.

13 Samuele adunque venne a Saulle. E Saulle disse a Samuele: Sii tu benedetto appo il Signore; io ho messa ad esecuzione la parola del Signore.

14 E Samuele disse: Che belar di pecore dunque è questo che mi viene agli orecchi? e che mugghiar di buoi è questo che io odo?

15 E Saulle disse: Queste bestie sono state menate dal paese degli Amalechiti; perciocchè il popolo ha risparmiato il meglio delle pecore e de’ buoi, per farne sacrificio al Signore Iddio tuo; ma abbiamo distrutto il rimanente al modo dell’interdetto.

16 E Samuele disse a Saulle: Permetti che io ti dichiari ciò che il Signore mi ha detto questa notte. Ed egli gli disse: Parla pure.

17 E Samuele disse: Non è egli così, che, quando tu ti sei reputato piccolo, tu sei stato costituito capo delle tribù d’Israele, e il Signore ti ha unto per re sopra Israele?

18 Ora il Signore ti avea mandato a questa impresa, e ti avea detto: Va’, distruggi que’ peccatori, gli Amalechiti, e fa’ loro guerra finchè sieno consumati.

19 Perchè dunque non hai tu ubbidito alla voce del Signore? anzi ti sei rivolto alla preda, ed hai fatto ciò che dispiace al Signore?

20 E Saulle disse a Samuele: Io ho pure ubbidito alla voce del Signore, e sono andato all’impresa, alla quale il Signore mi ha mandato, e ne ho menato Agag, re di Amalec, ed ho distrutti gli Amalechiti al modo dell’interdetto.

21 Ma il popolo ha preso, d’infra la preda, buoi e pecore, il meglio dell’interdetto, per farne sacrificio al Signore Iddio tuo, in Ghilgal.

22 E Samuele disse: Il Signore ha egli a grado gli olocausti e i sacrificii, come che si ubbidisca alla sua voce? Ecco, ubbidire val meglio che sacrificio; e prestare attenzione val meglio che grasso di montoni.

23 Perciocchè la ribellione è pari al peccato dell’indovinare; e il trasgredire è pari al peccato che si commette intorno agl’idoli ed alle immagini. Perciocchè tu hai sdegnata la parola del Signore, egli altresì ha sdegnato te, acciocchè tu non sii più re.

24 Allora Saulle disse a Samuele: Io ho peccato; conciossiachè io abbia trasgredito il comandamento del Signore, e le tue parole; perciocchè io temeva del popolo, onde io acconsentii a ciò ch’egli disse.

25 Ma ora, perdonami, ti prego, il mio peccato, e ritorna meco; ed io adorerò il Signore.

26 E Samuele disse a Saulle: Io non ritornerò teco; perciocchè tu hai sdegnata la parola del Signore, e il Signore altresì ha sdegnato te, acciocchè tu non sii più re sopra Israele.

27 E come Samuele si fu voltato per andarsene, Saulle prese il lembo del manto di esso, il quale si stracciò.

28 E Samuele gli disse: Il Signore ha oggi stracciato d’addosso a te il regno d’Israele, e l’ha dato ad un tuo prossimo, ch’è miglior di te.

29 Ed anche egli, che è la Vittoria d’Israele, non mentirà, e non si pentirà; perciocchè egli non è un uomo, per pentirsi.

30 E Saulle disse: Io ho peccato: deh! onorami ora in presenza degli Anziani del mio popolo, ed in presenza d’Israele, e ritorna meco, ed io adorerò il Signore Iddio tuo.

31 Samuele adunque se ne ritornò dietro a Saulle; e Saulle adorò il Signore.

32 Poi Samuele disse: Menatemi qua Agag, re di Amalec; ed Agag se ne andò a lui con dilicatezze. Ed Agag diceva: Certo l’amaritudine della morte è passata.

33 Ma Samuele gli disse: Siccome la tua spada ha orbate le donne di figliuoli, così sarà tua madre orbata di figliuoli fra le donne. E Samuele fece squartare Agag nel cospetto del Signore, in Ghilgal.

34 Poi Samuele se ne andò in Rama. E Saulle salì a casa sua in Ghibea di Saulle.

35 E Samuele non vide più Saulle, fino al giorno della sua morte; benchè Samuele facesse cordoglio di Saulle; ma il Signore s’era pentito d’aver costituito Saulle re sopra Israele.

Good News Translation GNT

1 Samuel said to Saul, "I am the one whom the Lord sent to anoint you king of his people Israel. Now listen to what the Lord Almighty says.

2 He is going to punish the people of Amalek because their ancestors opposed the Israelites when they were coming from Egypt.

3 Go and attack the Amalekites and completely destroy everything they have. Don't leave a thing; kill all the men, women, children, and babies; the cattle, sheep, camels, and donkeys."

4 Saul called his forces together and inspected them at Telem: there were 200,000 soldiers from Israel and 10,000 from Judah.

5 Then he and his men went to the city of Amalek and waited in ambush in a dry riverbed.

6 He sent a warning to the Kenites, a people whose ancestors had been kind to the Israelites when they came from Egypt: "Go away and leave the Amalekites, so that I won't kill you along with them." So the Kenites left.

7 Saul defeated the Amalekites, fighting all the way from Havilah to Shur, east of Egypt;

8 he captured King Agag of Amalek alive and killed all the people.

9 But Saul and his men spared Agag's life and did not kill the best sheep and cattle, the best calves and lambs, or anything else that was good; they destroyed only what was useless or worthless.

10 The Lord said to Samuel,

11 "I am sorry that I made Saul king; he has turned away from me and disobeyed my commands." Samuel was angry, and all night long he pleaded with the Lord.

12 Early the following morning he went off to find Saul. He heard that Saul had gone to the town of Carmel, where he had built a monument to himself, and then had gone on to Gilgal.

13 Samuel went up to Saul, who greeted him, saying, "The Lord bless you, Samuel! I have obeyed the Lord's command."

14 Samuel asked, "Why, then, do I hear cattle mooing and sheep bleating?"

15 Saul answered, "My men took them from the Amalekites. They kept the best sheep and cattle to offer as a sacrifice to the Lord your God, and the rest we have destroyed completely."

16 "Stop," Samuel ordered, "and I will tell you what the Lord said to me last night." "Tell me," Saul said.

17 Samuel answered, "Even though you consider yourself of no importance, you are the leader of the tribes of Israel. The Lord anointed you king of Israel,

18 and he sent you out with orders to destroy those wicked people of Amalek. He told you to fight until you had killed them all.

19 Why, then, did you not obey him? Why did you rush to grab the loot, and so do what displeases the Lord?"

20 "I did obey the Lord," Saul replied. "I went out as he told me to, brought back King Agag, and killed all the Amalekites.

21 But my men did not kill the best sheep and cattle that they captured; instead, they brought them here to Gilgal to offer as a sacrifice to the Lord your God."

22 Samuel said, "Which does the Lord prefer: obedience or offerings and sacrifices? It is better to obey him than to sacrifice the best sheep to him.

23 Rebellion against him is as bad as witchcraft, and arrogance is as sinful as idolatry. Because you rejected the Lord's command, he has rejected you as king."

24 "Yes, I have sinned," Saul replied. "I disobeyed the Lord's command and your instructions. I was afraid of my men and did what they wanted.

25 But now I beg you, forgive my sin and go back with me, so that I can worship the Lord."

26 "I will not go back with you," Samuel answered. "You rejected the Lord's command, and he has rejected you as king of Israel."

27 Then Samuel turned to leave, but Saul caught hold of his cloak, and it tore.

28 Samuel said to him, "The Lord has torn the kingdom of Israel away from you today and given it to someone who is a better man than you.

29 Israel's majestic God does not lie or change his mind. He is not a human being - he does not change his mind."

30 "I have sinned," Saul replied. "But at least show me respect in front of the leaders of my people and all of Israel. Go back with me so that I can worship the Lord your God."

31 So Samuel went back with him, and Saul worshiped the Lord.

32 "Bring King Agag here to me," Samuel ordered. Agag came to him, trembling with fear, thinking to himself, "What a bitter thing it is to die!"

33 Samuel said, "As your sword has made many mothers childless, so now your mother will become childless." And he cut Agag to pieces in front of the altar in Gilgal.

34 Then Samuel went to Ramah, and King Saul went home to Gibeah.

35 As long as Samuel lived, he never again saw the king; but he grieved over him. The Lord was sorry that he had made Saul king of Israel.
