1 Samuele 20

1 POI Davide se ne fuggì di Naiot, ch’è in Rama, e venne a Gionatan, e gli disse in faccia: Che ho io fatto? quale è la mia iniquità, e quale è il mio peccato inverso tuo padre, ch’egli cerca di tormi la vita?

2 E Gionatan gli disse: Tolga ciò Iddio; tu non morrai; ecco, mio padre non suol far cosa alcuna, nè piccola nè grande, ch’egli non me ne faccia motto. E perchè mi avrebbe mio padre celato questa cosa? questo non è.

3 Ma Davide replicò, giurando, e disse: Tuo padre sa molto bene che io sono in grazia tua; e perciò egli avrà detto: Gionatan non sappia nulla di questo, che talora egli non se ne conturbi. Ma pure, come vive il Signore, e come l’anima tua vive, non v’è se non un passo fra me e la morte.

4 E Gionatan disse a Davide: Che desidera l’anima tua, ed io tel farò?

5 E Davide disse a Gionatan: Ecco, domani è la nuova luna, nel qual giorno io soglio seder col re a mangiare; lasciami dunque andare, ed io mi nasconderò per la campagna fino alla sera del terzo giorno.

6 Se pur tuo padre domanda di me, di’: Davide mi ha istantemente richiesto di poter andar correndo in Bet-lehem, sua città; perciocchè tutta la sua nazione fa quivi un sacrificio solenne.

7 Se egli allora dice così: Bene sta; e’ va bene per lo tuo servitore; ma, se pur si adira, sappi che il male è determinato da parte sua.

8 Usa adunque benignità inverso il tuo servitore, poichè tu hai fatto entrare il tuo servitore teco in una lega giurata per lo Nome del Signore; e se pur vi è iniquità in me, fammi morir tu; e perchè mi meneresti a tuo padre?

9 E Gionatan gli disse: Tolga ciò Iddio da te; perciocchè, se io so che il male sia determinato da parte di mio padre, per fartelo venire addosso, non te lo farò io sapere?

10 E Davide disse a Gionatan: Chi me lo rapporterà, se pur tuo padre ti fa qualche aspra risposta?

11 E Gionatan disse a Davide: Vieni, usciamo fuori alla campagna. E uscirono amendue fuori alla campagna.

12 Allora Gionatan disse a Davide: O Signore Iddio d’Israele, quando domani, o posdomani, intorno a quest’ora, io avrò tentato mio padre, ed ecco, egli sarà di buon animo inverso Davide, se allora, o Davide, io non mando a fartelo sapere,

13 così faccia il Signore a Gionatan, e così gli aggiunga. Ma, se piace a mio padre farti male, io te lo farò sapere, e ti lascerò andare, e tu te ne andrai in pace; e sia il Signore teco, come egli è stato con mio padre.

14 E se pure io sono ancora in vita, non userai tu inverso me la benignità del Signore, sì che io non muoia?

15 E non farai tu che la tua benignità non venga giammai in perpetuo meno inverso la casa mia, nè anche quando il Signore distruggerà ciascuno de’ nemici di Davide d’in su la terra?

16 Gionatan adunque fece lega con la casa di Davide; ma il Signore domandò conto a’ nemici di Davide.

17 Gionatan ancora scongiurò Davide per l’amore che gli portava; perciocchè egli l’amava come l’anima sua.

18 Poi Gionatan gli disse: Domani è nuova luna; e tu sarai domandato; perciocchè il tuo seggio sarà vuoto.

19 Or aspetta fino al terzo giorno; poi scendi prestamente, e vieni al luogo, nel quale tu ti nascondesti in quel dì d’opera; e dimora presso alla pietra che mostra il cammino.

20 Ed io tirerò tre saette allato ad essa, come se io le tirassi ad un bersaglio.

21 Ed ecco, io manderò il mio garzone, dicendogli: Va’, trova le saette. Allora, se dico al garzone: Ecco, le saette son di qua da te; prendile, e vientene; perciocchè i fatti tuoi staranno bene, e non vi sarà nulla; sì, come vive il Signore.

22 Ma, se io dico al garzone: Ecco, le saette son di là da te; vattene, perciocchè il Signore ti manda via.

23 Ora, intorno al ragionamento che abbiamo tenuto insieme, tu ed io, ecco, il Signore ne è testimonio fra me e te, in perpetuo.

24 Davide adunque si nascose nel campo; e, venuto il giorno della nuova luna, il re si pose a sedere a tavola per mangiare.

25 Il re adunque si pose a sedere in su la sua sedia, come l’altre volte, cioè: in su la sedia d’appresso alla parete; e Gionatan si levò, ed Abner si pose a sedere allato a Saulle, e il luogo di Davide era vuoto.

26 E Saulle non disse nulla in quel giorno; perciocchè diceva fra sè stesso: Questo è qualche accidente, onde egli non è netto; di certo egli non è netto.

27 Ora il giorno appresso la nuova luna, ch’era il secondo, il luogo di Davide era ancora vuoto; e Saulle disse a Gionatan, suo figliuolo: Perchè non è venuto il figliuolo d’Isai a mangiare, nè ieri, nè oggi?

28 E Gionatan rispose a Saulle: Davide mi ha istantemente richiesto che io lo lasciassi andare fino in Bet-lehem.

29 E mi ha detto: Deh! lasciami andare; perciocchè noi facciamo un sacrificio della nostra nazione nella città; e il mio fratello istesso mi ha comandato che io ci andassi; ora dunque, se io sono in grazia tua, lascia, ti prego, che io fugga, e visiti i miei fratelli; perciò egli non è venuto alla tavola del re.

30 Allora l’ira di Saulle si accese contro a Gionatan; ed egli gli disse: O figliuolo di madre perversa e ribelle, non so bene io che tu tieni la parte del figliuol d’Isai, a tua vergogna, ed a vergogna della tua vituperosa madre?

31 Perciocchè tutto il tempo che il figliuolo d’Isai viverà in su la terra, non sarai stabilito, nè tu, nè il tuo reame. Ora dunque, manda per esso, e fammelo venire; perciocchè convien ch’egli muoia.

32 E Gionatan rispose a Saulle, suo padre, e gli disse: Perchè sarebbe egli fatto morire? che ha egli fatto?

33 E Saulle lanciò la sua lancia contro a lui, per ferirlo. Allora Gionatan conobbe ch’era cosa determinata da suo padre di far morire Davide.

34 Ed egli si levò da tavola acceso nell’ira; e quel secondo giorno della nuova luna non mangiò cibo alcuno; perciocchè egli era addolorato per cagion di Davide, e perchè suo padre gli avea fatto vituperio.

35 La mattina seguente adunque Gionatan uscì fuori alla campagna, al tempo ch’egli avea assegnato a Davide, avendo seco un piccolo garzone.

36 Ed egli disse al suo garzone: Corri, trova ora le saette che io trarrò. E il garzone corse, e Gionatan tirò le saette, per passar di là da esso.

37 E, come il garzone fu giunto al segno, al quale Gionatan avea tratte le saette, Gionatan gridò dietro a lui, e disse: Le saette non sono elleno di là da te?

38 E Gionatan gridava dietro al garzone: Va’ prestamente, affrettati, non restare. E il garzone di Gionatan raccolse le saette, e se ne venne al suo padrone.

39 Così il garzone non seppe nulla del fatto. Davide solo e Gionatan lo sapevano.

40 E Gionatan diede i suoi arnesi a quel suo garzone, e gli disse: Vattene, portali nella città.

41 Come il garzone se ne fu andato, Davide si levò dal lato del Mezzodì; e, gittatosi a terra in su la sua faccia, s’inchinò per tre volte; poi essi si baciarono l’un l’altro, e piansero l’un con l’altro; e Davide fece un grandissimo pianto.

42 Poi Gionatan disse a Davide: Vattene in pace; conciossiachè abbiamo giurato amendue l’uno all’altro, nel Nome del Signore, dicendo: Il Signore sia testimonio fra me e te, e fra la mia progenie e la tua, in perpetuo. (H20-43) Davide adunque si levò su, e se ne andò. E Gionatan se ne ritornò nella città.

1 Then David fled from Naioth in Ramah and went to Jonathan. "What have I done?" he asked. "What crime have I committed? What wrong have I done to your father to make him want to kill me?"

2 Jonathan answered, "God forbid that you should die! My father tells me everything he does, important or not, and he would not hide this from me. It just isn't so!"

3 But David answered, "Your father knows very well how much you like me, and he has decided not to let you know what he plans to do, because you would be deeply hurt. I swear to you by the living Lord that I am only a step away from death!"

4 Jonathan said, "I'll do anything you want."

5 "Tomorrow is the New Moon Festival," David replied, "and I am supposed to eat with the king. But if it's all right with you, I will go and hide in the fields until the evening of the day after tomorrow.

6 If your father notices that I am not at the table, tell him that I begged your permission to hurry home to Bethlehem, since it's the time for the annual sacrifice there for my whole family.

7 If he says, "All right,' I will be safe; but if he becomes angry, you will know that he is determined to harm me.

8 Please do me this favor, and keep the sacred promise you made to me. But if I'm guilty, kill me yourself! Why take me to your father to be killed?"

9 "Don't even think such a thing!" Jonathan answered. "If I knew for sure that my father was determined to harm you, wouldn't I tell you?"

10 David then asked, "Who will let me know if your father answers you angrily?"

11 "Let's go out to the fields," Jonathan answered. So they went,

12 and Jonathan said to David, "May the Lord God of Israel be our witness! At this time tomorrow and on the following day I will question my father. If his attitude toward you is good, I will send you word.

13 If he intends to harm you, may the Lord strike me dead if I don't let you know about it and get you safely away. May the Lord be with you as he was with my father!

14 And if I remain alive, please keep your sacred promise and be loyal to me; but if I die,

15 show the same kind of loyalty to my family forever. And when the Lord has completely destroyed all your enemies,

16 may our promise to each other still be unbroken. If it is broken, the Lord will punish you."

17 Once again Jonathan made David promise to love him, for Jonathan loved David as much as he loved himself.

18 Then Jonathan said to him, "Since tomorrow is the New Moon Festival, your absence will be noticed if you aren't at the meal.

19 The day after tomorrow your absence will be noticed even more; so go to the place where you hid yourself the other time, and hide behind the pile of stones there.

20 I will then shoot three arrows at it, as though it were a target.

21 Then I will tell my servant to go and find them. And if I tell him, "Look, the arrows are on this side of you; get them,' that means that you are safe and can come out. I swear by the living Lord that you will be in no danger.

22 But if I tell him, "The arrows are on the other side of you,' then leave, because the Lord is sending you away.

23 As for the promise we have made to each other, the Lord will make sure that we will keep it forever."

24 So David hid in the fields. At the New Moon Festival, King Saul came to the meal

25 and sat in his usual place by the wall. Abner sat next to him, and Jonathan sat across the table from him. David's place was empty,

26 but Saul said nothing that day, because he thought, "Something has happened to him, and he is not ritually pure."

27 On the following day, the day after the New Moon Festival, David's place was still empty, and Saul asked Jonathan, "Why didn't David come to the meal either yesterday or today?"

28 Jonathan answered, "He begged me to let him go to Bethlehem.

29 "Please let me go,' he said, "because our family is celebrating the sacrificial feast in town, and my brother ordered me to be there. So then, if you are my friend, let me go and see my relatives.' That is why he isn't in his place at your table."

30 Saul became furious with Jonathan and said to him, "How rebellious and faithless your mother was! Now I know you are taking sides with David and are disgracing yourself and that mother of yours!

31 Don't you realize that as long as David is alive, you will never be king of this country? Now go and bring him here - he must die!"

32 "Why should he die?" Jonathan replied. "What has he done?"

33 At that, Saul threw his spear at Jonathan to kill him, and Jonathan realized that his father was really determined to kill David.

34 Jonathan got up from the table in a rage and ate nothing that day - the second day of the New Moon Festival. He was deeply distressed about David, because Saul had insulted him.

35 The following morning Jonathan went to the fields to meet David, as they had agreed. He took a young boy with him

36 and said to him, "Run and find the arrows I'm going to shoot." The boy ran, and Jonathan shot an arrow beyond him.

37 When the boy reached the place where the arrow had fallen, Jonathan shouted to him, "The arrow is farther on!

38 Don't just stand there! Hurry up!" The boy picked up the arrow and returned to his master,

39 not knowing what it all meant; only Jonathan and David knew.

40 Jonathan gave his weapons to the boy and told him to take them back to town.

41 After the boy had left, David got up from behind the pile of stones, fell on his knees and bowed with his face to the ground three times. Both he and Jonathan were crying as they kissed each other; David's grief was even greater than Jonathan's.

42 Then Jonathan said to David, "God be with you. The Lord will make sure that you and I, and your descendants and mine, will forever keep the sacred promise we have made to each other." Then David left, and Jonathan went back to the town.
