1 Or Davide si partì di là, e si salvò nella spelonca di Adullam; il che come i suoi fratelli, e tutta la famiglia di suo padre, ebbero inteso, discesero a lui.

2 E tutte le persone ch’erano in distretta, ed indebitate, e ch’erano in amaritudine d’animo, si adunarono appresso di lui, ed egli fu lor capitano; e si trovarono con lui intorno a quattrocent’uomini.

3 E di là Davide andò in Mispa di Moab; e disse al re di Moab: Deh! lascia che mio padre, e mia madre, vadano e vengano fra voi, finchè io sappia ciò che Iddio farà di me.

4 Egli adunque li menò davanti al re di Moab; ed essi dimorarono con lui tutto il tempo che Davide fu in quella fortezza.

5 Or il profeta Gad disse a Davide: Non dimorare in questa fortezza; vattene, ed entra nel paese di Giuda. Davide adunque si partì di là, e se ne venne nella selva di Heret.

6 E SAULLE intese che Davide, con la sua gente, era stato riconosciuto. Or Saulle sedeva in Ghibea, sotto al bosco di diletto, ch’è in Rama, avendo la sua lancia in mano, e tutti i suoi servitori gli stavano d’intorno.

7 E Saulle disse a’ suoi servitori che gli stavano d’intorno: Deh! ascoltate, uomini Beniaminiti: Il figliuolo d’Isai vi darà egli pure a tutti de’ campi e delle vigne? vi costituirà egli tutti capitani di migliaia, e capitani di centinaia?

8 Conciossiachè vi siate tutti congiurati contro a me, e non vi sia alcuno che mi abbia fatto motto come il mio figliuolo ha fatto lega col figliuolo d’Isai; e non vi sia alcun di voi a cui dolga di me, e che mi scopra cosa alcuna; perciocchè il mio figliuolo ha fatto levare contro a me il mio servitore, acciocchè egli m’insidii, come egli fa oggi.

9 Allora Doeg Idumeo, il quale era costituito sopra i servitori di Saulle, rispose, e disse: Io vidi il figliuolo d’Isai ch’era venuto in Nob, ad Ahimelec, figliuolo di Ahitub;

10 il quale domandò il Signore per lui, e gli diè della vittuaglia, e anche gli diede la spada di Goliat Filisteo.

11 Allora il re mandò a chiamare Ahimelec, figliuolo di Ahitub, sacerdote, e tutta la famiglia del padre di esso, cioè: i sacerdoti ch’erano in Nob.

12 Ed essi tutti vennero al re. E Saulle disse: Ascolta ora, figliuolo di Ahitub. Ed Ahimelec rispose: Eccomi, signor mio.

13 E Saulle disse: Perchè vi siete congiurati contro a me, tu e il figliuolo d’Isai? conciossiachè tu gli abbi dato del pane ed una spada, ed abbia domandato Iddio per lui, acciocchè egli si levi contro a me, per pormi insidie, come egli fa oggi.

14 Ed Ahimelec rispose al re, e disse: E chi è, fra tutti i tuoi servitori, pari a Davide, leale, e genero del re, e che va e viene secondo che tu gli comandi, ed è onorato in casa tua?

15 Ho io cominciato oggi a domandare Iddio per lui? tolga ciò Iddio da me; non apponga il re cosa alcuna al suo servitore, nè a tutta la famiglia di mio padre; perciocchè il tuo servitore non sa cosa alcuna, nè piccola nè grande, di tutto questo.

16 E il re disse: Per certo tu morrai, Ahimelec, insieme con tutta la famiglia di tuo padre.

17 E il re disse a’ sergenti che gli stavano d’intorno: Volgetevi, ed uccidete i sacerdoti del Signore; perciocchè anch’essi tengono mano con Davide; ed avendo saputo ch’egli fuggiva, non me l’hanno fatto sapere. Ma i servitori del re non vollero metter le mani ad avventarsi sopra i sacerdoti del Signore.

18 E il re disse a Doeg: Volgiti tu, ed avventati sopra questi sacerdoti. E Doeg Idumeo, rivoltosi, si avventò sopra i sacerdoti, ed uccise in quel dì ottantacinque uomini che portavano l’Efod di lino.

19 Poi Saulle percosse Nob, città de’ sacerdoti, mettendo a fil di spada uomini e donne, fanciulli e bambini di poppa; mise eziandio a fil di spada buoi, asini e pecore.

20 Ma pure uno de’ figliuoli di Ahimelec, figliuolo di Ahitub, il cui nome era Ebiatar, scampò, e se ne fuggì dietro a Davide.

21 Ed Ebiatar rapportò a Davide come Saulle avea uccisi i sacerdoti del Signore.

22 E Davide disse ad Ebiatar: Io pensai bene in quel dì, che, essendo quivi Doeg Idumeo, egli per certo rapporterebbe il fatto a Saulle; io sono stato cagione della morte di tutti quelli della famiglia di tuo padre.

23 Dimora meco, non temere; chi cercherà di tormi la vita, cercherà ancora di torla a te: perciocchè tu sarai in buona guardia appresso di me.

1 David fled from the city of Gath and went to a cave near the town of Adullam. When his brothers and the rest of the family heard that he was there, they joined him.

2 People who were oppressed or in debt or dissatisfied went to him, about four hundred men in all, and he became their leader.

3 David went on from there to Mizpah in Moab and said to the king of Moab, "Please let my father and mother come and stay with you until I find out what God is going to do for me."

4 So David left his parents with the king of Moab, and they stayed there as long as David was hiding out in the cave.

5 Then the prophet Gad came to David and said, "Don't stay here; go at once to the land of Judah." So David left and went to the forest of Hereth.

6 One day Saul was in Gibeah, sitting under a tamarisk tree on a hill, with his spear in his hand, and all his officers were standing around him. He was told that David and his men had been located,

7 and he said to his officers, "Listen, men of Benjamin! Do you think that David will give fields and vineyards to all of you, and make you officers in his army?

8 Is that why you are plotting against me? Not one of you told me that my own son had made an alliance with David. No one is concerned about me or tells me that David, one of my own men, is right now looking for a chance to kill me, and that my son has encouraged him!"

9 Doeg was standing there with Saul's officers, and he said, "I saw David when he went to Ahimelech son of Ahitub in Nob.

10 Ahimelech asked the Lord what David should do, and then he gave David some food and the sword of Goliath the Philistine."

11 So King Saul sent for the priest Ahimelech and all his relatives, who were also priests in Nob, and they came to him.

12 Saul said to Ahimelech, "Listen, Ahimelech!" "At your service, sir," he answered.

13 Saul asked him, "Why are you and David plotting against me? Why did you give him some food and a sword, and consult God for him? Now he has turned against me and is waiting for a chance to kill me!"

14 Ahimelech answered, "David is the most faithful officer you have! He is your own son-in-law, captain of your bodyguard, and highly respected by everyone in the royal court.

15 Yes, I consulted God for him, and it wasn't the first time. As for plotting against you, Your Majesty must not accuse me or anyone else in my family. I don't know anything about this matter!"

16 The king said, "Ahimelech, you and all your relatives must die."

17 Then he said to the guards standing near him, "Kill the Lord's priests! They conspired with David and did not tell me that he had run away, even though they knew it all along." But the guards refused to lift a hand to kill the Lord's priests.

18 So Saul said to Doeg, "You kill them!" - and Doeg killed them all. On that day he killed eighty-five priests who were qualified to carry the ephod.

19 Saul also had all the other inhabitants of Nob, the city of priests, put to death: men and women, children and babies, cattle, donkeys, and sheep - they were all killed.

20 But Abiathar, one of Ahimelech's sons, escaped, and went and joined David.

21 He told him how Saul had slaughtered the priests of the Lord.

22 David said to him, "When I saw Doeg there that day, I knew that he would be sure to tell Saul. So I am responsible for the death of all your relatives.

23 Stay with me and don't be afraid. Saul wants to kill both you and me, but you will be safe with me."
