1 Samuele 24

1 (H24-2) E, come Saulle fu ritornato di dietro a’ Filistei, gli fu rapportato e detto: Ecco, Davide è nel deserto di En-ghedi.

2 (H24-3) Allora Saulle prese tremila uomini scelti d’infra tutto Israele, e andò per cercar Davide e la sua gente, su per le rupi delle camozze.

3 (H24-4) E, giunto alle mandre delle pecore, in su la via ov’è una spelonca, Saulle entrò per fare i suoi bisogni naturali; e Davide e la sua gente erano assettati nel fondo della spelonca.

4 (H24-5) E la gente di Davide gli disse: Ecco il giorno che il Signore ti ha detto: Ecco io ti do il tuo nemico nelle mani, e tu gli farai come ti piacerà. Allora Davide si levò, e pianamente tagliò il lembo dell’ammanto di Saulle.

5 (H24-6) E, dopo questo, il cuore battè a Davide, perchè egli avea tagliato il lembo dell’ammanto di Saulle.

6 (H24-7) E disse alla sua gente: Tolga il Signore da me che io faccia questo al mio signore, all’Unto del Signore, che io gli metta la mano addosso; conciossiachè egli sia l’Unto del Signore.

7 (H24-8) E Davide, con parole, stolse da ciò la sua gente, e non le permise di levarsi contro a Saulle. E Saulle, levatosi dalla spelonca, se ne andava a suo cammino.

8 (H24-9) E Davide si levò, e uscì fuori della spelonca, e gridò dietro a Saulle, dicendo: O re, mio signore. E Saulle riguardò dietro a sè. E Davide s’inchinò con la faccia verso terra, e si prostese.

9 (H24-10) E Davide disse a Saulle: Perchè attendi alle parole delle genti che dicono: Ecco, Davide procaccia il tuo male?

10 (H24-11) Ecco, pur oggi, gli occhi tuoi veggono che il Signore ti avea oggi dato in mano mia, nella spelonca, ed alcuno parlò di ucciderti; ma la mia mano ti ha risparmiato; ed io ho detto: Io non metterò la mano addosso al mio signore; perciocchè egli è l’Unto del Signore.

11 (H24-12) Ora, padre mio, vedi, vedi pure il lembo del tuo ammanto che io ho in mano mia; e poichè, quando io tagliai il lembo del tuo ammanto, non ti uccisi, sappi e vedi che nella mia mano non vi è male, nè misfatto alcuno, e che io non ho peccato contro a te; e pur tu vai a caccia della vita mia, per tormela.

12 (H24-13) Il Signore giudichi fra me e te, e il Signore mi vendichi di te; ma io non metterò la mia mano sopra te.

13 (H24-14) Come dice il proverbio degli antichi: L’empietà proceda dagli empi; ma io non metterò la mia mano sopra te.

14 (H24-15) Dietro a cui è uscito il re di Israele? chi vai tu perseguitando? un can morto, una pulce.

15 (H24-16) Il Signore adunque sia giudice, e giudichi fra me e te, e vegga e mantenga la mia causa, e mi faccia ragione, riscotendomi dalla tua mano.

16 (H24-17) E, quando Davide ebbe fornito di dire queste parole a Saulle, Saulle disse: È questa la tua voce, Davide, figliuol mio? E alzò la voce, e pianse.

17 (H24-18) E disse a Davide: Tu sei più giusto di me; perciocchè tu mi hai renduto bene per male; là dove io ti ho renduto male per bene.

18 (H24-19) E tu mi hai oggi fatto conoscere come tu sei sempre proceduto bene inverso me; conciossiachè il Signore mi avesse messo nelle tue mani; e pur tu non mi hai ucciso.

19 (H24-20) E, se alcuno trovasse il suo nemico, lo lascerebbe egli andare benignamente? Il Signore adunque ti renda del bene in iscambio di ciò che tu mi hai oggi fatto.

20 (H24-21) Ed ora, ecco, io so che per certo tu regnerai, e che il regno di Israele sarà fermo nelle tue mani.

21 (H24-22) Ora dunque giurami per lo Signore, che tu non distruggerai la mia progenie dopo me, e che tu non isterminerai il mio nome dalla famiglia di mio padre.

22 (H24-23) E Davide giurò a Saulle. Poi Saulle se ne andò a casa sua. E Davide e la sua gente salirono alla fortezza.

Good News Translation GNT

1 When Saul came back from fighting the Philistines, he was told that David was in the wilderness near Engedi.

2 Saul took three thousand of the best soldiers in Israel and went looking for David and his men east of Wild Goat Rocks.

3 He came to a cave close to some sheep pens by the road and went in to relieve himself. It happened to be the very cave in which David and his men were hiding far back in the cave.

4 They said to him, "This is your chance! The Lord has told you that he would put your enemy in your power and you could do to him whatever you wanted to." David crept over and cut off a piece of Saul's robe without Saul's knowing it.

5 But then David's conscience began to hurt,

6 and he said to his men, "May the Lord keep me from doing any harm to my master, whom the Lord chose as king! I must not harm him in the least, because he is the king chosen by the Lord!"

7 So David convinced his men that they should not attack Saul. Saul got up, left the cave, and started away.

8 Then David went out after him and called to him, "Your Majesty!" Saul turned around, and David bowed down to the ground in respect

9 and said, "Why do you listen to people who say that I am trying to harm you?

10 You can see for yourself that just now in the cave the Lord put you in my power. Some of my men told me to kill you, but I felt sorry for you and said that I would not harm you in the least, because you are the one whom the Lord chose to be king.

11 Look, my father, look at the piece of your robe I am holding! I could have killed you, but instead I only cut this off. This should convince you that I have no thought of rebelling against you or of harming you. You are hunting me down to kill me, even though I have not done you any wrong.

12 May the Lord judge which one of us is wrong! May he punish you for your action against me, for I will not harm you in the least.

13 You know the old saying, "Evil is done only by evil people.' And so I will not harm you.

14 Look at what the king of Israel is trying to kill! Look at what he is chasing! A dead dog, a flea!

15 The Lord will judge, and he will decide which one of us is wrong. May he look into the matter, defend me, and save me from you."

16 When David had finished speaking, Saul said, "Is that really you, David my son?" And he started crying.

17 Then he said to David, "You are right, and I am wrong. You have been so good to me, while I have done such wrong to you!

18 Today you have shown how good you are to me, because you did not kill me, even though the Lord put me in your power.

19 How often does someone catch an enemy and then let him get away unharmed? The Lord bless you for what you have done to me today!

20 Now I am sure that you will be king of Israel and that the kingdom will continue under your rule.

21 But promise me in the Lord's name that you will spare my descendants, so that my name and my family's name will not be completely forgotten."

22 David promised that he would. Then Saul went back home, and David and his men went back to their hiding place.
