1 Timothy 1

DBY

NCV

1 Paul, apostle of Jesus Christ, according to [the] command of God our Saviour, and of Christ Jesus our hope,
1 From Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus, by the command of God our Savior and Christ Jesus our hope.
2 to Timotheus, [my] true child in faith: grace, mercy, peace, from God our Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.
2 To Timothy, a true child to me because you believe: Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.
3 Even as I begged thee to remain in Ephesus, [when I was] going to Macedonia, that thou mightest enjoin some not to teach other doctrines,
3 I asked you to stay longer in Ephesus when I went into Macedonia so you could command some people there to stop teaching false things.
4 nor to turn their minds to fables and interminable genealogies, which bring questionings rather than [further] God's dispensation, which [is] in faith.
4 Tell them not to spend their time on stories that are not true and on long lists of names in family histories. These things only bring arguments; they do not help God's work, which is done in faith.
5 But the end of what is enjoined is love out of a pure heart and a good conscience and unfeigned faith;
5 The purpose of this command is for people to have love, a love that comes from a pure heart and a good conscience and a true faith.
6 which [things] some having missed, have turned aside to vain discourse,
6 Some people have missed these things and turned to useless talk.
7 desiring to be law-teachers, not understanding either what they say or concerning what they [so] strenuously affirm.
7 They want to be teachers of the law, but they do not understand either what they are talking about or what they are sure about.
8 Now we know that the law [is] good if any one uses it lawfully,
8 But we know that the law is good if someone uses it lawfully.
9 knowing this, that law has not its application to a righteous person, but to [the] lawless and insubordinate, to [the] impious and sinful, to [the] unholy and profane, to smiters of fathers and smiters of mothers; to murderers,
9 We also know that the law is not made for good people but for those who are against the law and for those who refuse to follow it. It is for people who are against God and are sinful, who are not holy and have no religion, who kill their fathers and mothers, who murder,
10 fornicators, sodomites, kidnappers, liars, perjurers; and if any other thing is opposed to sound teaching,
10 who take part in sexual sins, who have sexual relations with people of the same sex, who sell slaves, who tell lies, who speak falsely, and who do anything against the true teaching of God.
11 according to the glad tidings of the glory of the blessed God, with which *I* have been entrusted.
11 That teaching is part of the Good News of the blessed God that he gave me to tell.
12 [And] I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has given me power, that he has counted me faithful, appointing to ministry him
12 I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who gave me strength, because he trusted me and gave me this work of serving him.
13 who before was a blasphemer and persecutor, and an insolent overbearing [man]: but mercy was shewn me because I did it ignorantly, in unbelief.
13 In the past I spoke against Christ and persecuted him and did all kinds of things to hurt him. But God showed me mercy, because I did not know what I was doing. I did not believe.
14 But the grace of our Lord surpassingly over-abounded with faith and love, which [is] in Christ Jesus.
14 But the grace of our Lord was fully given to me, and with that grace came the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.
15 Faithful [is] the word, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom *I* am [the] first.
15 What I say is true, and you should fully accept it: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the worst.
16 But for this reason mercy was shewn me, that in me, [the] first, Jesus Christ might display the whole long-suffering, for a delineation of those about to believe on him to life eternal.
16 But I was given mercy so that in me, the worst of all sinners, Christ Jesus could show that he has patience without limit. His patience with me made me an example for those who would believe in him and have life forever.
17 Now to the King of the ages, [the] incorruptible, invisible, only God, honour and glory to the ages of ages. Amen.
17 To the King that rules forever, who will never die, who cannot be seen, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.
18 This charge, [my] child Timotheus, I commit to thee, according to the prophecies as to thee preceding, in order that thou mightest war by them the good warfare,
18 Timothy, my child, I am giving you a command that agrees with the prophecies that were given about you in the past. I tell you this so you can follow them and fight the good fight.
19 maintaining faith and a good conscience; which [last] some, having put away, have made shipwreck as to faith;
19 Continue to have faith and do what you know is right. Some people have rejected this, and their faith has been shipwrecked.
20 of whom is Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have delivered to Satan, that they may be taught by discipline not to blaspheme.
20 Hymenaeus and Alexander have done that, and I have given them to Satan so they will learn not to speak against God.
