1 Timothy 5

1 An ancient man rebuke not, but entreat him as a father: young men, as brethren:
1 Do not speak harshly to an older man, but speak to him as to a father, to younger men as brothers,
2 Old women, as mothers: young women, as sisters, in all chastity.
2 to older women as mothers, to younger women as sisters—with absolute purity.
3 Honour widows that are widows indeed.
3 Honor widows who are really widows.
4 But if any widow have children or grandchildren, let her learn first to govern her own house and to make a return of duty to her parents; for this is acceptable before God.
4 If a widow has children or grandchildren, they should first learn their religious duty to their own family and make some repayment to their parents; for this is pleasing in God's sight.
5 But she that is a widow indeed, and desolate, let her trust in God and continue in supplications and prayers night and day.
5 The real widow, left alone, has set her hope on God and continues in supplications and prayers night and day;
6 For she that liveth in pleasures is dead while she is living.
6 but the widow who lives for pleasure is dead even while she lives.
7 And this give in charge, that they may be blameless.
7 Give these commands as well, so that they may be above reproach.
8 But if any man have not care of his own and especially of those of his house, he hath denied the faith and is worse than an infidel.
8 And whoever does not provide for relatives, and especially for family members, has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.
9 Let a widow be chosen of no less than threescore years of age, who hath been the wife of one husband.
9 Let a widow be put on the list if she is not less than sixty years old and has been married only once;
10
10 she must be well attested for her good works, as one who has brought up children, shown hospitality, washed the saints' feet, helped the afflicted, and devoted herself to doing good in every way.
11 But the younger widows avoid. For when they have grown wanton in Christ, they will marry:
11 But refuse to put younger widows on the list; for when their sensual desires alienate them from Christ, they want to marry,
12 Having damnation, because they have made void their first faith.
12 and so they incur condemnation for having violated their first pledge.
13 And withal being idle they learn to go about from house to house: and are not only idle, but tattlers also and busy bodies, speaking things which they ought not.
13 Besides that, they learn to be idle, gadding about from house to house; and they are not merely idle, but also gossips and busybodies, saying what they should not say.
14 I will, therefore, that the younger should marry, bear children, be mistresses of families, give no occasion to the adversary to speak evil.
14 So I would have younger widows marry, bear children, and manage their households, so as to give the adversary no occasion to revile us.
15 For some are already turned aside after Satan.
15 For some have already turned away to follow Satan.
16 If any of the faithful have widows, let him minister to them, and let not the church be charged: that there may be sufficient for them that are widows indeed.
16 If any believing woman has relatives who are really widows, let her assist them; let the church not be burdened, so that it can assist those who are real widows.
17 Let the priests that rule well be esteemed worthy of double honour: especially they who labour in the word and doctrine.
17 Let the elders who rule well be considered worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in preaching and teaching;
18 For the scripture saith: Thou shalt not muzzle the ox that treadeth out the corn: and, The labourer is worthy of his reward.
18 for the scripture says, "You shall not muzzle an ox while it is treading out the grain," and, "The laborer deserves to be paid."
19 Against a priest receive not an accusation, but under two or three witnesses.
19 Never accept any accusation against an elder except on the evidence of two or three witnesses.
20 Them that sin reprove before all that the rest also may have fear.
20 As for those who persist in sin, rebuke them in the presence of all, so that the rest also may stand in fear.
21 I charge thee, before God and Christ Jesus and the elect angels, that thou observe these things without prejudice, doing nothing by declining to either side.
21 In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus and of the elect angels, I warn you to keep these instructions without prejudice, doing nothing on the basis of partiality.
22 Impose not hands lightly upon any man, neither be partaker of other men’s sins. Keep thyself chaste.
22 Do not ordain anyone hastily, and do not participate in the sins of others; keep yourself pure.
23 Do not still drink water, but use a little wine for thy stomach’s sake and thy frequent infirmities.
23 No longer drink only water, but take a little wine for the sake of your stomach and your frequent ailments.
24 Some men’s sins are manifest, going before to judgment: and some men they follow after.
24 The sins of some people are conspicuous and precede them to judgment, while the sins of others follow them there.
25 In like manner also good deeds are manifest: and they that are otherwise cannot be hid.
25 So also good works are conspicuous; and even when they are not, they cannot remain hidden.
